I fell asleep in class, when I awoke the town was deserted - Chap 2
We entered the shopping centre through the sliding glass door, the silence just as eerie. We were greeted by the same old shopping mall, a massive building with shops forming a maze, and decorating the interior. Students went there all the time, including me.
The difference now is that the entire place was deserted, and the entire maul was covered in silence.
“For fucks sake!” Andrew screamed as he slammed his fist against a wall. The sound of his punch echoed throughout the shopping centre. Tim fell to his knees with no words.
I don’t blame them; we can’t understand what is happening. I mean when you really think about it, why the hell is the entire town deserted and why would they specifically choose us to live. Entertainment? Do we know something?
I wandered off into the shopping center, leaving the others behind. I didn’t have any breakfast, not that there is any food at my home. I noticed Tim was following me in silence, I went into the grocery centre. I then noticed that Andrew was following behind us, he had such a pained expression on his face.
Some time has passed. We’re now taking refuge in a bedding store, me and Tim resting on beds side by side. Andrew sitting on the bed in front of me, all of us in utter silence. I continued to think about one thing, why are we here? How could some psycho make a whole town deserted in a day? This would have to be some organization. But then it hit me, something that would have to be linked to Jordan.
“Hey, Andrew?” I call out, “What?” he responded in a pissed of tone. “Did you ever talk with Jordan?” He didn’t respond to this question. Instead, Tim answered for him, “Yea, Andrew was one of the guys that Jordan’s girl cheated on him with.” Andrew remained silent. “I thought there was only one guy?” “No there were at least three guys she cheated on him with. I told him it was only Oliver because it would’ve been more painful knowing she was with that many guys.” Tim replied.
We were once again silent. “To answer your question, yes Andrew does have a connection to Jordan. Why are you asking that?” Tim asked. “Well… We all have connections to Jordan and he recently went into witness protection out of town, which may explain why we are the only people left.” I responded, “What are you saying?” Tim looked puzzled. “Well Jordan was getting targeted by a hitman, and he survived two encounters. What if that hitman was linked to an organization which cleared out the entire town’s population accept us because we have a connection to Jordan. Why they would let us live because we have a Jordan connection, I wouldn’t know.” I stated, “But why would they do this?” Tim replied. “Maybe to entertain someone? I’m really not too sure.”
I was then cut off by Andrew, “Shut the fuck up! You’re so god damn annoying!” I flinched back, he sounded as if he wanted to jump me. Before Tim and I could even respond to him, he got up and headed for the exit. Tim ran after him in which Andrew slammed the glass door behind him.
I laid back and decided to fall asleep and thought to myself about what we were going through. For people like Andrew and Tim, this is hell because they have all these friends and people they will no longer talk to and might never see again. For me, I have practically nothing to go back to. I doubt I’ll Jordan again and Tim and I barely talked with each other so we aren’t that close. I’m so anti-social and have no friends, my family is broken with an asshole dad and neglectful mother, and no life.
It pisses me off whenever I see some of the popular kids get sad. Like a girl cries because they went through a breakup with a boyfriend, they didn’t give a shit about. Or some dude puts his anger out on other people when he’s rejected. They at least have friends to fall back on, family, a promising future, and the ability to be able to socially interact.
I have no friends, or family, or future, or even the basic ability to be able to talk to anyone. You just learn to not care anymore.
I’m broken out of my reflective thought by Tim, “Dude, it’s really bad.” “What?” I questioned him. “Andrew’s gone out of town and he outran me,” Tim responded with a concerned look on his face. “Let him” “What?” Tim’s face bore a puzzled expression. “I said let him, did you not hear me?” Tim looked at me with concern and a faint level of disgust. “How could you say that he’s going to die!” I Got up and began walking away, “I don’t care, Andrew was given the warning and he ignored it.”
Fuck sake, I should probably follow Andrew. I mean I don’t have anything to live for.
I threw myself onto a random bed, I wanted to cry. I’ve never felt so trapped, just the fact that I won’t miss anyone who disappeared within this god damn town made me realize how sad my life really is.
Nobody will miss me.
The darkness of the night started to consume the building. Even if my eyes were wide open it would still be dark. I didn’t care. I’d rather it stays dark forever.
I awoke to the screams of Tim, it jolted me awake.
I turned to see Tim looking ahead, his face looked white and horrified. His body was frozen in place. I turned to see something that had burned itself into my mind. It took me a moment to realize I was screaming.
The image I had seen was already burned into my eyelids.
I saw Andrew, but his whole body was disfigured. All of his joints bent in ways that should not be possible. His body was pale and he was hanging from a noose. We turned to the left and on the wall was a set of text. Just like what we saw on the wall at the gym.
I read the text:
