Chapter 2 – Chap 2
“At night, Emily would go into your house and take pictures of you. As for how she got in, we have no idea.” the officer told me.
I couldn’t believe it. Emily seemed like such a nice woman. How could she do such a thing?
“Do you know why she did this, officer?”
“She wouldn’t tell us that. She didn’t take the plea at court, so we couldn’t get all the answers out of her.”
I was mad. Not only did Emily kill my dog and nearly kill me, but she trained Oreo to be a killer. No dog is a bad dog, they just have bad owners. If Emily would have never adopted a dog, Oreo would have had a good home and Dusk would still be alive, and so would Basil.
The officer didn’t explain one thing however. Was Emily there when I was attacked? She had to be, right? Oreo would only attack if Emily said the word, “attack”. There were still many unanswered questions. I was determined to get those answers. I just needed some closure.
Throughout the next couple of days, I tried to research into who Emily was and why she wanted to do what she did. My leg and stomach still hurt like hell, so I had a lot of time on my hands. The only problem is I had to do all the typing and searching with one hand because I was still waiting for my prosthetic fingers to come to my doctor’s office. Apparently, my family sued Emily while I was at the hospital, so I had plenty of money while I was off work.
I searched up Emily’s Facebook, but it seemed normal. I then searched up her twitter, and again, normal. Then, I went to her Instagram. Normal.
“Damn it!” I shouted with frustration. “What am I supposed to do? There isn’t anything abnormal on any of her social media platforms.”
I began to see who she followed. I saw a weird looking profile called, “Ra Rak Reb.” I was confused as to what those words said, or if they were meant to be some sort of symbol. I clicked on it, and what I found was disturbing.
“What the fuck?” I thought. “Who would do something like this? And why?”
What I found was a bunch of pictures from the dark web. Those pictures were of abused dogs.
“Why the fuck does Instagram allow this to be up?”
There was a link to the dark web page that those pictures were from. I didn’t want to click it, but if I wanted to figure out why Emily did what she did, I needed to click the link. The link brought me to a page with hundreds of photos and videos of people abusing and training their dogs. There were also people putting up advertisements of people looking for jobs. These people were doing the same thing Emily was. As I scrolled through, I started to see videos of dogs attacking humans in some weird room. The room had white floors and walls, and there were lights that you would use for photo shoots around the room. I’ll spare you the details of those videos.
I reported the page to the police. I didn’t want anymore dogs to be abused like that, and any more people to die like that. The police said they would shut down the page and attempt to find the hundreds of people that were on the page.
Even though I found that page, it still didn’t tell me the reason Emily would do any of this. I went back to Facebook and tried to search up her mom. I found her. Emily’s mom’s name is Jean. I found Jean’s phone number and tried to call her. She didn’t answer. I was going to go write down her phone number so I could call her later. I got up to get a sticky note from the drawer in the kitchen.
“Shit!” I shouted as I fell to the ground. My leg still hurt like a mother fucker, that’s why I fell. I struggled to get back up. I pushed myself up off of the coffee table.
“I should probably buy a cane until my leg fully heals.” I thought. I tried to think of what I could use until I got a cane.
I started to limp into the kitchen. I saw my broom and figured I could use it as a cane for now. I took the broom bristles side up.
I went to the drawer in my kitchen that had the sticky notes in it to write down Jean’s phone number. In that drawer, I found pictures of Dusk. My eyes started to tear up as I thought of the memories we had together. All the times we played. All the times we cuddled. And everything we did together I thought about. I would do anything to see Dusk once more. I then thought of when Dusk died. I then was filled with rage. I needed to meet Emily’s mom as soon as possible. I didn’t bother to write down her phone number and just called her right away. Jean answered this time.
“Hello. Is this Jean Rangton? Emily’s mom?” I asked as calmly as I could at the moment.
“This is she. Who is this?”
“Hello miss. My name is Adam Munk. I am calling to see if we could meet up. I have a few questions to ask.”
“And what would those questions be, Adam?”
“They are about your daughter. It would be better if we talked in person.”
“I don’t want to just meet someone who called me on the phone.”
“We can meet in a public place during the day.”
“Oh, alright. I’ve got nothing better to do.”
“Perfect. Where would you like to meet, Mrs. Rangton?”
“Is the park in the center of town okay?”
“Perfect. Is 1:00 p.m. tomorrow good for you?”
“That’s great. You have a good day, Adam.”
“You too. Bye.” I hung up the phone. I was surprised how smoothly that went. For the rest of the day, I just relaxed and rested, since I was still healing.
The next day came around and I went to the park at 12:30 p.m. While I was sitting on a bench waiting for Jean, I had flashbacks to the night Dusk died. I remembered Oreo standing by the foot of my bed, growling at me. I remembered getting part of my calf bit off. I remembered having a chunk of flesh being ripped out of my stomach. I remembered Dusk bolting in and saving my life. I remembered Dusk on the ground, with a hole in his stomach gather up his strength to lean up and rip half of Oreo’s neck off. I remembered petting Dusk as he died. I missed Dusk, and still sometimes cry to this day.
I eventually saw a woman come to the park. She seemed like she was looking for someone, so I assumed it was Jean. I went up to the woman.
“Are you Jean Rangton?” I asked.
“Yes. Are you Adam?”
“That would be me.”
I shook her hand and we went to sit on the bench that I was at a minute ago.
“So Adam, what was it that you wanted to ask me?”
“Its about your daughter, Emily. I’ll start from the beginning.” I then proceeded to tell Jean all that happened. From the moment I started to train Oreo, to the moment I reported the dark web page. She looked terrified, disappointed, and angry at the same time.
“So, Mrs. Rangton. I wanted to ask you; is there any reason for Emily to want to do all of this?”
“Well good heavens Adam, I had no idea my baby was so violent. I have no idea where she would have gotten an idea like that.”
“Are you sure?” I asked. “Did she ever meet anyone as a teenager that you had a bad feeling about? Or perhaps as a young adult?
“Well there is one person. But I don’t think he was doing anything with dogs.”
“Maybe this guy knew someone that did those kinds of things to dogs?”
“Perhaps. I can’t believe my baby would do such a thing. I’m so sorry.”
“What was this guy’s name?”
“Uh. I think it was… Brison Cliff.”
“Brison Cliff. Okay. Thank you Mrs. Rangton, I appreciate you coming here to talk to me.”
“My pleasure. Have a good day.”
“You too, bye.” I got off the bench and walked to my house.
“Brison Cliff. I’ll have to look him up on Facebook or something.” I thought to myself.
As I was walking home, I got a phone call. It was the doctor’s office. They told me that they had my prosthetic fingers. I was overjoyed. When I got home, I got in my car and drove to the doctor’s office.
They showed me how to work them and put them on me. I was so happy I had fingers again.
I drove home and searched Brison Cliff on Facebook. I found his page, and it was full of pictures of him smoking weed. From his pictures, he seemed to live in an RV. I found his phone number and decided to call him. Brison answered the phone.
“Who is this?” Brison asked.
“My name is Adam Munk. Are you familiar with Emily Rangton.?” I asked in a polite manner.
“Emily Rangton. Well shit, I haven’t heard that name in years. Anyway, what do you want?”
“I would like to meet up with you and ask you a few questions.”
“What the fuck do you wanna ask me? If it’s about the cocaine, I told you guys already, I didn’t sell it to them!”
I was confused.
“Sir, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I just want to meet up. Is that okay with you?”
“Ugh. Fine. I got nothin to do anyway. What time and when.”
“Is today at 6:00 p.m. okay with you Mr. Cliff?”
“Yeah that’s fine.”
“Perfect. Where would you like to meet?”
“Just meet me at my RV. You already know I’m a drug dealer, so I’ve got nothin to hide no more.”
“Okay sir, where is your RV located?”
“I’ll text you the address.”
“Perfect. Thank you so much sir. See you later.”
I then hung up. As I waited for 5:30 to roll around, I was testing out my new fingers. They were great, Just like my old fingers, except they weren’t flesh.
Once 5:30 came, I started to walk to the address Brison gave me. Once I arrived, I went up to his RV and knocked on his door.
“Who’s there?” shouted a voice from inside the RV.
“It’s Adam.” I shouted back.
A little bit of rustling came from inside the RV, and then the door opened. Brison had a white tang top on, had a dark blond scruffy beard, had black sweatpants on, a grey beanie, and a bear in his hand.
“Come on in.” Brison said.
I went into his RV and sat down on his couch. Brison sat 2 cushions away from me on said couch.
“So Adam, what did you wanna ask me?”
“What was your relationship like with Emily Rangton?”
“Geez. It’s been so long. Well, we met because she wanted some weed, so I began to be her dealer. She never wanted to do hard drugs, just get a little high off of weed. After 5 years of this, she told me she wanted to stop doing drugs. We were still good friends though. We mostly just hung out, went to clubs, got drunk, and once in a while had some “alone time”.”
“Okay, Now, have you ever introduced her to anyone before?”
“Lots of people.”
“Anyone particularly bad?”
“Depends what you consider bad. If you mean by bad people who do drugs, then 90% of them were bad. But if you’re talking criminal records for more than just drugs, then 2 or 3.”
“And what were these people’s names, Brison?
“Kevin Clitche, Mason Ovewood, and Tyrone Liston.”
“And what did each of them do that got them in jail?”
“Kevin went to jail for animal abuse, Mason went to jail for robbing a Wawa at gunpoint, and Tyrone went to jail for burglary.”
“Interesting. What animals did Kevin abuse?”
“Mostly dogs. He was fucking great at training them though. I have no idea where he learned it. But I feel bad for those dogs. That’s part of why I cut contact with him. That guy’s an asshole. Even more than me.”
“Do you have Kevin’s phone number?”
“Yeah I do. I don’t recommend calling him, but lemme write it down for you.”
Brison wrote down Kevin’s phone number and gave it to me.
“Okay, thank you very much Brison. I’ll be on my way.”
I started to walk out of the RV when Brison said my name.
“Adam. You seem like a cool guy. You wanna stay around for a beer?”
“Sure, why not.”
I stayed at his RV, and we hung out and talked for a while. I had half a beer as I didn’t want to risk getting even a little buzzed. A couple hours passed when I told Brison that I had to go. We shook hands and I left his RV.
It was about 9:30 at night, and I was walking down the street that was 6 blocks from my house. I then heard someone yell.
“Hey! Are you Adam Munk?” the man shouted.
“I am he. Who are you?” I replied.
I then heard the man say something that made my heart skip a beat.
“That’s him. Get him.”
When I heard that, I started running. Unfortunately, I was too slow, and 4 men in black hoodies and jeans grabbed me. It was weird though. They held me arms, two men on each arm. They held me like a bully’s friends are holding someone for the bully to start punching them. I then heard a familiar voice from the darkness.
“Very good boys.”
All of a sudden, I saw someone emerge from the darkness. It was Jean.
“Jean? What are you doing?” I shouted.
“You reported us to the police. We don’t like that.”
Just then, Jean lifted up what seemed to be a brick, and hit me over the head with it. I then blacked out.
To be continued…
