“No no…no…” Anika cried, she kicked her car. The yellow Slug-bugs engine had died half way through the unmarked path in the middle of no where. Tears welled up in the corners of her blue eyes, her light blonde hair was bouncing as she kicked the car again. “Oh come on!” She yelled.
She heard a twig snap, she let out a gasp and turned. Wolves and bears were in these woods, she jumped into the backseat of the car. She locked all the doors and covered herself in a blanket. Whatever was there would not be able to see her.
She heard scratching on the front door, wolves? Then she heard a voice. She popped her head up, there was a man. His hair was gray, his eyes a dark green. She saw a large greyhound with him. He was still scratching at the door.
She slowly opened the door, stepping out meekly. “Hey…uhm hey.. can you help me.” She said catching him off guard, she had closed the door. He turned towards her in surprise, in his left hand was a rope in the right a knife.
She turned in panic, she began to run towards the woods, the trees became thicker as she made her way deeper into the forest. She felt her heart beating quickly and her blood racing, her breathing was becoming uneven.
“Why did my car have to die? Why why why…” She cried as she kept running, she heard the sound of voices becoming clearer. Children laughing and dogs barking.
She stopped moving, she couldn’t bring someone with a knife into a place with children, must be a campsite. She went to turn when the dog pounced, she let out a scream. She closed her eyes waiting for it to bite her. She gasped as it began to lick her happily. She pushed the large greyhound off her. She went to stand when the dog took hold of her pastel blue dress. She pulled on the dress, the sound of the fabric ripping filled her ears. She tumbled back into the arms of the man who had chased her this far.
She let out a scream. “Help please help!” She cried, the man snickered he pressed the knife against her light skin. She felt it nick her collar bone, she let out a soft cry. “Help!” She screamed. Her crimson blood dripped down her chest.
She heard him laugh. “What help do you think you will receive?” He asked, his voice was gruff. She struggled against him. He grabbed the rope and tied her wrists together, a long piece was left to drag her towards the sounds of laughter and barking.
She dug her heels into the ground, he smirked and tossed her over his shoulder. She let out a scream as he carried her into the clearing. The sound of laughter became louder. She let out a cry as she was dropped into a chair.
Children and others circled around her.
“Kill her or keep her?” The man asked looking her over, Anika shivered her eyes wide. “Well.”
“I wanna keep her.” Whispered a small girl, her ginger curls tied in blood splattered ribbon.
“Well who else agrees with Sydney?” The man asked, a smile covered his face, he patted the young girl’s shoulder. She looked to them with wide eyes, children ranged in age from a few months to entering adulthood. Adults too aged from young to old, dogs and cats stayed close to the children. She could hear the sound of cows, pigs, and chickens.
She was shaking still, the people seemed strange. They were divided in attire, one half of the adults and all the children wore clothes that made them seem like farmers, sun dresses and overalls; none of the kids had shirts with decals or images of Disney characters or superhero’s. The other half of the people wore clothing that fit in with the society she lived in. Tattered jeans and t-shirts.
“We could always use another woman in the family.” Said a man, he was tall and looked to be around the age of thirty. “Always need more children, plus it seems to me that someone is of age to get a girl now.”
She was still shaking terrified. Of age? A girl? Family? What was going on?
The seven children, two teenagers, and three toddlers sat around her. A women held a child that seemed only a few months old.
“I do like her, I would be happy to take her. Seems better to me than going out into the city. Already here.” Said one boy standing between an older man and women, the little girl with ginger curls clapped. “Make a good wife once I get to know her.”
“W..what is going on?” She asked finally speaking.
“Oh the girl isn’t mute.” Said the man standing next to the one next to the boy who spoke last with a smile. “What is your name darling?”
She stayed silent still shaking. The man who had brought her to the group stuck his knife into her arm. “Tell them your name.” She let out a cry.
“Please..don’t hurt me anymore…” she begged.
“So what’s your name darling?” Asked the boy who said he would take her in, he kneeled down in front of her. The children and teens watched as the toddlers began to crawl around.
“A..Anika. But..but people call me Annie.” She said softly. She was looking down at her knees trying to hide her eyes from his. He grabbed her chin in his hand softly, carefully, sweeter then she had expected.
“Well Anika, welcome to your new family. Home. My name is Jace, and you are mine to take care of now. Let’s get you to my room, clean you up and explain the rules to you, alright?”
She hesitantly nodded, his jade green eyes sparkled and he looked happy. A smile was spread across his lips. His hair was brown, a chocolatey mix of lights and darks.
He grabbed the rope connected to her wrists and walked her towards the second largest house in the clearing.
Fifteen houses all in a circle. One looked more like a school house, there was two barns, a stable, a playground and a well.
He opened the door and helped her up a flight of stairs. There were four door on the floor. He smiled and took her into the last one at the end of the hall.
He sat her on the bed, wrapped her arm and bandaged her collar bone. “Anika, you and I are meant to be. It was fate that brought you to me.”
She bit her lip terrified and shaking. “Please please don’t do this. You are crazy. You can’t do this, you you can’t do it.” He smiled and kissed her forehead. She leaned away from him, he grabbed her tied hands.
“I will let you go if you promise to listen to me.” He said with a smile. She shakily nodded.
“Alright…I will behave.” She said with a whimper.
He grabbed a faded blue pocket knife, he flipped the blade up and cut the rope; he kept the blade up and held it. “Love, Anika darling as long as you behave you will never get hurt again. Alright baby girl?” He seemed sweet but she did not trust him.
She looked at him with shaking hands. “Please I don’t know what you want from me.”
“You are going to be my wife at one point, but the two of us will need to get to know one another first, can’t raise children with a women I don’t know.” He said softly as he picked her up and placed her in his lap. “I’m twenty, well two days ago I turned twenty. How old are you baby?”
She nodded. “Eighteen…I’m eighteen.”
“Good alright am adult now. Do you want to know the name of every person here? They are your family now.”
“They aren’t my family. You aren’t my-” she was cut off, he squeezed her arm tightly.
“I am your family,” He snapped, “sorry sorry I don’t want to scare you my love.”
“You are crazy.” She cried tears slipping down her cheeks. “Crazy craz-” He turned her to look at him.
“Please stop. I want you to feel safe and happy here.” He held her tightly. “Here tell you what. I’ll make a list of all the families and who is who’s. Then I will tell you the rules when you are somewhat settled. The doors are a locked so you can’t leave here, it will be alright.” He kissed her forehead again and grabbed a paper and began to write down the names of the people. She laid down against the bed crying slightly.
“You will love this place, we are all a family. A great big family.” He said as he turned handing her the paper. His hand writing was slanted but readable.
Families, last names on top of each familys.

“You read that over, I am sure you are hungry. I will bring up some food and a water. Oh how did you get here first may I ask?”
“That ma-” she began but was cut off.
“No before him. Did you hike or drive?”
“I drove, my car died…I still have a book and some things in it.” She said softly.
“I will go grab your things, the car has to be brought her anyway. Did you have a phone?”
“Yeah…” She replied softly. “But it died too.. in the compartment. Do you have a place for me to charge that?”
“No electricity here. We have no tv or internet, only thing we really have is our stoves.” He replied kissing her forehead and heading out of the room.
She looked around for a way to escape. These people were insane.
