Chapter 19

“Some doors we open not with our hands, but with decisions from which we cannot turn away.”

Joe and I swim in silence. The water around us is quieter than before, almost gentle — as if it is biding its time. I do not trust this silence. After the room of mirrors, everything feels suspiciously soft.

The tunnel leads us to an archway — but it isn’t made of tiles or metal; it is made of bones. The light inside seems to breathe. The walls throb with a pulse, and I realize: we are closer to the center than ever. We are inside a living creature. Not just a labyrinth. An organism.

Joe touches the wall, and it flinches. He jerks his hand back and whispers:

“This isn’t just architecture.”

“No. It’s… it.”

We step inside.

Inside is a gargantuan hall, flooded with a reddish light, as if filtered through capillaries. Sacs hang along the walls — translucent, breathing, and within each one is a figure. It takes me a moment to comprehend who they are. And then… I recognize them.

It’s us. Everyone who ever entered the labyrinth. Doubles. Not dead. Not alive. Suspended in fluid like fruit on a tree, waiting to be harvested. Even I am there. Even Joe.

“It’s a backup,” Joe says. “It’s… if we had chosen differently.”

I step closer. My copy has her eyes closed, but the corner of her lips is curled into a cruel smile. I know what that means. That is the version of me who refused to save anyone. Who betrayed. Who submitted.

I clench my fist.

Suddenly, a light flashes at the far end of the hall. Lia emerges from a tunnel. She is wounded, blood running down her neck, but she stays on her feet. Her eyes are terrified, yet focused.

“Miranda…” she wheezes. “He’s here. He came back.”

I rush toward her.

“Who?”

“Thomas,” she answers, “but he isn’t Thomas anymore.”

Seconds later, a shadow looms behind her. I see him. I recognize him. But… something in him is broken. He is taller, stronger, his skin gleaming like wet plastic. And his eyes — are mirrors. In every sense of the word.

He moves as if he knows where we will be before we even realize it ourselves.

He is no longer just a participant. He has become part of the construct.

“Miranda,” he says, in a voice that now sounds like our coach, Mr. Vines. “You have reached the Heart. Are you ready?”

I pull Lia close to me. Joe takes a step forward, shielding us. But Thomas (or what is left of him) only laughs.

“There is no choice left here. Only recycling.”

He lunges at us.

The clash is brief. But it isn’t simple. Joe fights him, looking as though he is trying not to defeat him, but merely hold him back. Thomas hurls him into the wall, and the surface tears open like a wound. Joe vanishes behind it.

“No!” I scream. “Joe!”

But there is no time. I grab Lia, and we swim through the other doors — because now we understand: the labyrinth is beginning to close.

It isn’t just a house. It’s a cycle. And it wants to reset.

And if we don’t find the exit before it seals tight, we will become the next copies inside those sacs.

I look back. I see that Thomas has vanished. But the mirror where he stood is cracked. And in its reflection — is me.

But not me right now. Me in the future. The one who will stay here forever.

We swim. Because there is no other choice left.

And because all that remains — is the finale.
