The door opened and Dr. Hwang came in with fast steps, eyes going straight to the monitor. “Everyone step out for a moment,” he said immediately, his voice calm but firm.

Everyone obeyed without question. Tae lingered at the doorway for just a second looking back at Jungkook one more time before he stepped out.

The door clicked shut. Dr. Hwang turned to Jungkook. He didn’t rush. He leaned forward to his eye level unhurried, completely steady.

“Hey, Kook-ah,” he said softly. “Breathe. Nothing is happening right now. You lost consciousness yesterday night that’s all. Nothing else happened. You are safe. You are completely fine.”

His voice was gentle and even the kind of voice that didn’t demand anything, just offered something solid to hold onto.

Jungkook’s breathing began to slow. Gradually. Unevenly at first, then finding a slightly steadier rhythm. But the tears didn’t stop.

His eyes dropped to his hands again the scars too visible, too exposed against the white of the hospital gown. He pulled them down slowly beneath the blanket, pressing them out of sight.

Dr. Hwang noticed immediately. He reached over without a word and took the small thin blanket folded at the foot of the bed, shaking it open and wrapping it gently around Jungkook’s shoulders and arms covering everything. Quietly. Without drawing attention to why.

Jungkook’s shoulders dropped slightly. His breathing eased a little more.

Dr. Hwang gave him another moment. Then he reached for his stethoscope and placed it gently against Jungkook’s clothed chest below the bandage, careful of the wound. Jungkook watched the movement with wary eyes.

“Take a deep breath for me,” Hwang said softly. “In and out.”

Jungkook tried.

The cough came immediately sharp and sudden  his whole body curling slightly with it. And with it came a bolt of pain straight through his chest. He whimpered a small, involuntary sound hand flying up instinctively toward the source of it.

And that was when he felt it. The bandage. Sitting directly over his chest wide and clean and impossible to ignore now that his fingers had found it.

His eyes went straight to it. His breathing picked up again immediately.

“Hey!” Dr. Hwang’s voice came in quickly, calm and grounding. “It’s okay. You only have a small wound there nothing serious. There was some internal bleeding around your chest muscles and we had to address it. That’s all. You are fine, Jungkook-ah. You are completely fine.”

Jungkook stared at the bandage. A tear slipped down before he could stop it.

“Do you want me to call your brothers?” Dr. Hwang asked gently. Jungkook shook his head immediately. “Samchoon?” Again  a quick, firm shake of the head.

Dr. Hwang sighed quietly. He could see it already the way Jungkook’s shoulders were pulling inward, the way his eyes had gone distant and guarded. He was trying to shutting down again.

“Kook-ah…. You need someone with you. Let me call one of your brothers, hmm?” Hwang said carefully, already shifting to stand.

“No….” The word came out barely above a whisper. Low and broken and exhausted. “P-please.” The monitor beeped a little faster.

Hwang stilled immediately. He sat back down and kept his voice completely steady. “Okay. Okay! I won’t call anyone. Just breathe for me, hmm? Nice and slow.”

Jungkook’s breathing gradually settled again. A single tear slipped down his cheek quiet and slow and he didn’t move to wipe it.

“Can I examine you?” Hwang asked after a moment. Soft and unhurried. “Just a small check. That’s all.”

Jungkook hesitated. Then he nodded. Barely. But it was there.

Hwang moved slowly and deliberately no sudden movements, no rushing giving Jungkook’s eyes time to follow every action before it happened. He gently lowered the thin blanket just enough to access the chest area.

Jungkook looked down at himself with wide, glassy eyes still shining with tears that hadn’t fallen yet.

Hwang reached up and carefully placed his hand in front of Jungkook’s line of sight a gentle shield, blocking his view of the bandage and the wound without making it feel like a restraint.

“Just look away for me,” Hwang said quietly. “You don’t need to watch.”

Jungkook turned his face away slowly. Eyes fixed on the wall beside him. Jaw tight. Hands pressing flat against the mattress at his sidesholding on to something, even if it was just the sheets.

Hwang began carefully undoing the buttons of the hospital gown with one hand slow and gentle, barely any movement at all.

“Don’t scratch it or put any force on it, hmm?” Hwang said quietly, finishing up. “You will feel a little pain maybe a five on the scale. If it becomes too much, tell me and I’ll give you something for it. You will be fine.”

Jungkook didn’t say anything.

He reached out slowly and pulled the blanket back toward himself drawing it close, wrapping it around his body, hugging it against his chest. Like it was the only thing that felt safe right now. The only thing that didn’t ask anything of him.

Hwang noticed. He noticed the way Jungkook’s eyes had gone distant again not blank exactly, but sealed. The fear sitting quietly behind them. The hurt that never quite left no matter how much the body calmed.

He didn’t push.

“I’ll leave you now,” he said gently. “Your brothers will be right outside. If you feel any pain any at all tell them immediately, hmm?”

No response. Hwang stood there for a moment. Just a moment. Looking at the boy hugging the blanket with his face turned away small and still and so carefully closed off from the world.

Then he walked out slowly and pulled the door closed behind him with a soft, careful click.

Everyone was there in the corridor. All of them except Eunwoo, Jin, and Hyunwoo. Standing in a loose cluster, all turning toward Hwang the moment the door shut.

“He is stable now. Vitals are fine,” Hwang said. Everyone exhaled a collective, quiet release of breath that had been held for too long.

“But….” Hwang paused, his expression settling into something more serious. “He is shutting himself down again.” He looked across their faces steadily. “That is not good for him. Not in his condition. He seemed frightened. Please just…. be with him. Don’t push. Don’t crowd. Just make sure he feels safe. That is the most important thing right now.”

Everyone nodded. “Make sure he eats something light when he’s ready. Juices too his body is extremely depleted.” He looked at them carefully. “And please do not let him himself into a panic. His heart cannot handle that right now. Not after last night.”

Another round of nods.

Dr. Hwang held their gaze for one more moment like he wanted to make sure it had truly landed and then he turned and walked down the corridor.

Silence settled over the group. Then Tae moved. He was the first one through the door.

The room was dim. Quiet. The monitor beeped its slow, steady rhythm.

And there was Jungkook. Completely hidden beneath the blanket curled on his side, back facing the door, facing the window instead. Only his IV hand peeked out from beneath the edge of the blanket, lying still against the mattress.

Everything else hidden. All of him tucked away and covered and turned from the world.

Tae stood just inside the doorway and looked at him. And didn’t move for a long moment. Tae took a slow, deep breath.

Then he walked to the bed quietly, carefully and sat down in the chair beside it. He didn’t touch Jungkook. Didn’t reach for the blanket. Didn’t say anything yet. He just sat there for a moment, close, letting his presence settle into the room first.

Everyone else filed in behind him. Soft footsteps. The door pulled shut. Nobody spoke. Then Tae tried.

“Kook-ah….” His voice came out steady deliberately, carefully steady, held together with everything he had. “It’s hyungie. Can you look at me?”

Silence. Not even a shift beneath the blanket. Not a nod. Not a hum. Nothing. Tae’s jaw tightened slightly. He kept his expression still.

“Kook-ah…. Hey. It’s just me. It’s hyungie.” His voice stayed soft, stayed even but the hurt bled through at the edges despite him. “I won’t do anything. I just want you to speak with me. I’m right here with you.”

Still nothing.

Haein stood a little far from tae. Hobi stepped forward gently. He reached down and took hold of the edge of the blanket slowly, giving it time, no sudden movements and carefully drew it back.

Jungkook’s eyes squeezed shut immediately against the light a small flinch, involuntary. His face was flushed and damp, tear tracks dried and fresh ones over them, cheeks red from crying that had been happening quietly beneath the blanket for however long he had been lying there alone. His hair was stuck to his forehead with sweat.

Nobody moved for a moment.

They just looked at him.

And every single heart in that room broke a little more quietly than the last

“Hey!” Tae’s voice came out soft. “Look at me, Kook-ah.”

He reached out slowly and covered Jungkook’s hand with his barely any pressure, just warmth.

Jungkook’s eyes opened. They found Tae’s face immediately. Red and glassy and swimming with tears but open. Looking.

Tae held his gaze. He didn’t speak out loud. He just mouthed it slow and clear, making sure every word landed.

We are here. We are still here with you. We are still with you.

Jungkook’s lips trembled. And then he shook his head. Slowly. Barely.

Tae exhaled quietly and slid his hand a little further into Jungkook’s. “I’m with you, baby. We are all here with you.”

Jungkook shook his head again more insistent this time and his hand shifted, weakly trying to pull away. His fingers tugging back, weak.

“D-Don’t.” He whispered weakly. Tae felt it like something breaking clean in half inside his chest.

He let go immediately.

Pulled his hand back and didn’t let himself look away from Jungkook’s face even though every instinct in him wanted to.

Because it wasn’t rejection. He knew that. He understood it he did.

He was scared.

But understanding it didn’t stop it from feeling like his baby brother was scared of him. Of his own hyung. The one who had been sitting beside him for hours, holding his hand, pressing kisses against his bandaged fingers.

The realisation sat in him heavy and cold.

Then…. “Kook-ah!” Hyunwoo’s voice. The door swinging open behind them.

Jungkook’s head turned immediately at the sound and something in his face shifted. Not much. But something cracked. Tears poured more the moment he saw his samchoon.

Hyunwoo crossed the room in quick steps and didn’t hesitate for even a second. He reached Jungkook and gathered him in both arms wrapping around him, pulling him close, one hand going straight to the back of his head.

“Hey. Hey, it’s okay. I’m here.”

Jungkook didn’t speak.

He just leaned in. His fingers found the fabric of Hyunwoo’s shirt and curled into it tight and desperate and he pressed his face against his chest and cried. Silently. The kind of crying that made no sound at all, just shook through the body in small, continuous tremors.

Hyunwoo held him and rubbed his back slowly and didn’t say anything more. And the others just watched. All of them with tears.

Standing in that small hospital room, watching Jungkook hold onto Hyunwoo like he was the only solid thing in the world and understanding, with a clarity that was almost unbearable, what that meant.

He felt safe with Hyunwoo. He didn’t feel safe with them. Not right now. Not yet.

His own brothers the people who loved him most and he was frightened. Not of them exactly. But frightened in a way that their presence couldn’t reach, couldn’t soothe, couldn’t fix with proximity alone.

Tae stoof there, hands trembleing and looked at his youngest brother’s back shaking silently in someone else’s arms and felt the full weight of twelve years he hadn’t been there settle over him all at once.

Namjoon turned away slightly toward the window. His throat moved.

Jimin pressed his lips together and looked at the floor.

Hobi stood very still  eyes soft, expression carefully neutral  holding everything in the way he always did when he was the one falling apart on the inside. Haein stood there with tears.

Nobody spoke. Because there were no words for this.

There was just the quiet sound of Jungkook crying against Hyunwoo’s chest. And all of them standing there, carrying the particular grief of people who loved someone very much and still couldn’t be the ones to make it better.

Jungkook’s fingers clutched tighter around Hyunwoo’s shirt twisting into the fabric like he was afraid that letting go meant being left alone again.

“It’s okay,” Hyunwoo murmured against his hair. “It’s just your hyungs, Kook-ah. Its just hyungies. It’s okay.”

Jungkook only cried harder. Silently. The shaking in his shoulders continuous and small.

Hyunwoo didn’t push it further. He just rubbed his back slow, steady circles and brought his other hand up to move gently through Jungkook’s hair. Unhurried. Patient.

“I’m here,” he whispered softly. Just that. Just those two words, quiet enough that only Jungkook could hear them. He then
wrapped the bed sheet around him just to keep him warm, still hugging him.

Jungkook pressed further into him l tucking himself deeper into the embrace, hiding his face completely against Hyunwoo’s chest and the bed sheet. Like if he got close enough he could disappear entirely into the safety of it.

Tae stood beside the bed and watched his baby brother shake in someone else’s arms and felt it settle into him like something permanent. The guilt. Not the sharp, burning kind, but the slow, heavy kind that came from understanding. Jungkook wasn’t scared because of anything Tae had done in this room today.

He was scared because of everything that had happened in the years Tae hadn’t been there.

And somehow that was worse.

The minutes stretched. Jungkook’s shaking gradually slowed not stopping, just lessening his breathing finding a fractionally steadier rhythm as Hyunwoo kept moving his hand through his hair over and over.

Then, barely audible stuttered and hoarse and costing him something to get out “I…. I w-want t-to be al-alone.”

The room stilled. Every person in it heard it. The first full sentence he had spoken since waking up and it was asking them to leave.

Hyunwoo looked up. His eyes moved across the room meeting each face briefly and he gave a small, clear nod toward the door.

Go. He will be fine

One by one they moved. Quietly. No protest, no hesitation  just the soft sound of footsteps and the door opening. Namjoon. Jimin. Hobi. Haein.

Tae didn’t move. He stood there eyes fixed on the small, trembling shape pressed into Hyunwoo’s arms tears running down his face without him wiping them. Jungkook’s back was to him. He couldn’t see his face.

He just stood there for one more second.

Then Namjoon’s hand came gentle and firm closing around his arm. Tae looked at him. Namjoon didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to.

Tae exhaled shakily. He nodded once.

He turned toward the door. But before he stepped through it he looked back one last time at his youngest brother. At the way Jungkook was still holding onto Hyunwoo’s shirt. At the way he was still shaking. At the way he was so small.

Then he walked out. And the door closed softly behind him

The minutes passed slowly.

Jungkook’s crying eased gradually, in the unhurried way that exhaustion eventually wins over everything else. The shaking in his shoulders lessened. His breathing deepened. And somewhere between one quiet moment and the next, the crying simply dissolved into sleep.

Hyunwoo felt the moment it happened. The way Jungkook’s grip on his shirt loosened completely. The way his breathing evened out and slowed.

He stayed still for a little while longer  just to be sure. Then, carefully and slowly, he began to ease back one hand supporting Jungkook’s head, the other guiding his body gently back against the pillow. Every movement was careful.

Every adjustment careful. Making sure nothing woke him, nothing startled him, nothing pulled him back from the rest he had finally found.

Once he was settled head against the pillow, body positioned comfortably Hyunwoo reached down and pulled the blanket up. All the way to his shoulders. Tucking it in at the sides the way you did for a child. The way Jungkook had always let him do, even when he was too old for it, even when he pretended he didn’t need it.

Hyunwoo sat back.

He looked at his nephew’s face slack and peaceful now he lookedmore smaller and younger at the moment, the tear tracks still drying on his cheeks. He reached over and picked up the tissue from the bedside table.

Gently, with the same careful patience he had given everything tonight, he wiped the remnants of tears from Jungkook’s face. Then the sweat from his forehead, from his temples, from along his hairline.

Slow. Thorough. Unhurried. Once he was done he set the tissue aside and just sat there.

Watching Jungkook breathe. Watching his chest rise and fall steady, even, real. Making sure. Just making sure.

Outside in the corridor, the group had scattered slightly some sitting, some standing, all quiet in their own way.

Jimin stood near Tae. “Tae,” he said softly. “I’m fine,” Tae said immediately. His voice came out flat and automatic  the kind of I’m fine that meant the exact opposite and didn’t try very hard to hide it.

A pause. “I’m going for a ride,” he said. “If anything happens anything at all call me immediately.” He was already turning, already walking.

Jimin sighed quietly. Then he fell into step beside him. “I’m coming too,” he said simply.

Tae glanced sideways at him. And despite everything despite the exhaustion and the guilt and the heaviness sitting in every part of him something softened slightly at the corners of his mouth. A small, tired, genuine chuckle.

Of course. Of course Jimin was coming. He had been his best friend for a reason. Always showing up without being asked. Always just there. Right beside him. Without making it a thing.

Tae didn’t say anything else. He just kept walking. And Jimin walked with him.

Little Happy Smiles From Past

2007.

The bedroom was warm and quiet. Yoona lay nestled against Kim’s side, one hand resting softly over the gentle curve of her belly, moving in slow, absent circles.

Kim sat half reclined against the headboard, one arm around her, a book open in his other hand though he had read the same paragraph three times already and retained none of it.

“Yoonie,” Yoona said softly. “Mm?” Yoonseong hummed in response  “What do you think our baby will be like? A prince or a princess?”

Kim set the book down on his chest and looked at the ceiling thoughtfully. Then he sighed long and dramatic.”Well!!” he said carefully. “Our two cute little babies are already torturing me every single day to play football with them. So annoying. Especially that bear in human costume”

Yoona turned her head and fixed him with a look. Then she smacked his chest.

“Ow!!!” Yoonseong whimperedloud. “Just answer the question, Kim Yoonseong.” “Those are just facts, Yoona,” he said, rubbing his chest with exaggerated injury. But his eyes were already creasing at the corners.

He was quiet for a moment, pretending to think very seriously about it.

Then he said, very carefully, like he was making a confession of something way tooooo important.  “I want to play Barbie.”

Yoona burst out laughing.

The kind of laugh that came from somewhere completely unguarded  bright and full and filling the whole room with it. She pressed her hand over her mouth but it didn’t help at all.

“The man,” she managed between laughs, “who runs an entire empire who makes grown men nervous just by walking into a room”

“Yes its me!” Kim said closing his eyes smirking proudly.

“Wants to play Barbie.” Yoona laughed hard.

“I said what I said.” Kim fake-glared at her, the corners of his mouth fighting him completely. Yoona only laughed harder, her whole body shaking with it and he watched her and let himself smile in the way he only ever did here. In this room. With her.

He then hugged her close and spoke. “Any baby…. Just want him or her to born healthy…. without causing any pain to my baby!” He said and picked yoona’s nose, placing a small kiss on her forehead.

“I am your baby?” She asked chuckling. “Of course you are my first baby!!” Kim said smiling proudly. “Ahhh I wonder if you get a princess you will completely forgot me!!” Yoona teased.

“Ahh well! I should think about it! If its a girl then I’ll shower my princess with all lov–” he stopped when Yoona dramatically spoke “so you will forget me right! I knew! You traitor!” Yoona said huffing.

“Ahhh noo! You are my baby! You will always be my first baby!” Kim siad, yoona fake glared at him looking away pouting angry. Kim sighed and hovered over not fully but their face were so close and looked at her with a playful smirk.

Yoona gasped at him. “Yoonie! Kids will come!” Yoona spoke but gasped when kim kissed her on her soft petal lips. Kim chuckled at her expression.  Then spoke caressing her hair back, “you will always be my first priority. You are my everything yoonaya!” He said and picked her again. No lust. Just pure love. Eyes closed, the second pass the more the kiss deepened.

Then the door burst open. Yoona pushed kim immediately making him roll down and fell on the floor hard. Kim hissed. “Always wrong timing!” He mumbled.

There he saw. Small feet. Small steps. Moving as fast as they possibly could.

“My bear! ” Kim sat up immediately, both arms extending and Tae came barrelling across the room in his tiny dress and launched himself directly into his appa.

“Appa!” He landed with a thud that made Kim grunt dramatically, and Tae grabbed two fistfuls of his shirt and looked up at him with his enormous eyes bright and round and carrying the very specific expression of someone who had extremely important news to deliver.

“My baby,” Kim said, settling him properly in his arms while standing up and sat on the bed with him on hid lap, then he placed a soft kiss against his forehead. “Where is your hyungie?” Yoona sat there leaning against the headboard adoring her family.

Tae’s eyes went wide with fresh excitement. He held both hands out stretching them as far apart as they would go, fingers splayed.

“Me and hyungie were playing outside,” he began importantly. “And I saw worms, appa.” He paused for gravity. “Big. BIG. Worms.” He spoke while stretching his hands big.

Kim’s eyebrows rose as he spoke. “Big big worms?”

“VERY big,” Tae confirmed, nodding seriously. Then his face broke into the most delighted giggle. “So I showed hyungie. I showed him up close” he leaned in conspiratorially “and hyungie RAN, appa. He ran so fast.”

The giggle overtook him completely. His whole small body shook with it squirming in Kim’s lap, unable to contain it and Kim caught him before he toppled sideways.

“Did you touch it, Tae?” Yoona asked, looking at her youngest with that specific expression mothers reserved for situations they already knew the answer to.

Tae blinked at her innocently. Then nodded.

“Ahhh, jinjja!” She reached over and pinched his nose. “You naughty little bear.”

“Eomma,” Tae said, utterly offended, lower lip pushing out into a full pout. “It was cute.”

“Ewww.” She made a face so dramatic that even she almost laughed. Kim pressed his face into Tae’s hair to hide his grin and hugged him closer, shoulders shaking.

Then, “Eomma.”

Jin appeared in the doorway. He was in cozy dress, hair slightly messy, wearing the deeply wounded expression of someone who had suffered greatly and needed the world to know it. He was whining before he had fully stepped into the room.

He took one look at Tae sitting happily on their father’s lap and his eyes went wide with fresh outrage.

Kim and Tae turned to look at him simultaneously.

And then with the perfect coordination of two people who shared a single mischievous brain between them  they both stuck their lips out at him at exactly the same moment.

Jin’s mouth dropped open. “EOMMAAA!” He whined loud to his mom. Kim pulled Tae closer with exaggerated smugness, hugging him tight. Tae buried his giggle in Kim’s chest.

Jin made a sound of pure betrayal and immediately went to his mother climbing up beside her, burrowing into her side, letting her wrap her arms around him completely.

“My Jin,” Yoona said, pressing kiss after kiss against his face until he scrunched up and giggled despite himself. “Let those sorry fellows be. We don’t need them.”

Jin stuck his tongue out at Tae and Kim from the safety of his mother’s arms. They both looked away with theatrical innocence.

Yoona shook her head fondly at all three of them. Then she settled back and looked between her boys her small, wonderful, chaotic boys and smiled.

“Anyway,” she said. “What kind of baby do you want? Boy or gi—” She didn’t even finish the sentence.

“GIRL!” Jin shouted. “BOY!” Tae shouted.

At exactly the same time. They turned and looked at each other.

Kim looked at tae with betrayed look. “Why do you want a boy, my bear?”

Tae considered this with great seriousness. After a whole minute of thinkingwith a serious expression he spoke. “To play football,” he said simply.

Yoona burst out laughing full and bright, her whole body shaking with it, one hand going to her belly.

Kim stared at his son with the expression of a man whose patience was being genuinely tested. Then he lifted Tae off his lap and placed him on the bed beside him with a huff.

“You,” he said solemnly, pointing at Tae, “are going to play Barbie with your baby sister. And you are going to enjoy it.”

“Nooooo! Only football!” Tae scrambled upright immediately, eyes wide with horror.

“Yes.” Kim spatted like a kid.

“I want a BABYB ROTHER” Tae whined

“Sister.”

“BROTHER!”

“Sister, Kim Taehyung.”

“Appaaaaa” Tae whined

Jin dissolved into giggles from his mother’s arms eyes squeezed shut, feet kicking against the mattress, completely delighted by his brother’s suffering.

Yoona laughed and laughed, one hand still resting warm over her belly over the small, unknown, not yet arrived person growing quietly inside her who had no idea that their family was already arguing over him.

And the bedroom was full of noise and warmth and the kind of ordinary, unremarkable happiness that you never thought to hold onto because you never imagined it could end.

Just a family. Just a warm night. Just this.
