Chapter 79
Haein and Suho sat silently in front of the doctor, their expressions tense and hearts pounding.
The doctor looked up from the report in his hand, face grim. “His condition is… extremely critical. Though he woke up and, thankfully, there’s no life-threatening damage as forr now… the internal bleeding was extensive. Honestly, we feared he wouldn’t make it. But he did. He fought harder than we’ve seen anyone fight.”
Haein’s breath hitched. Suho clenched his fists in his lap.
“If the bleeding had spread even a little more in the brain… we would have lost him,” the doctor continued. “He’s stable, yes, but far from being out of danger. His recovery will be long and difficult.” the doctor continued having a serious expression.
“He will suffer frequent headaches. Dizziness. nosebleeds. There will be times he may suddenly collapse from exhaustion. His nervous system is extremely sensitive right now, and that adds more burden. If the pain gets too severe, and if his condition worsens due to any carelessness… he could leave us.”
The room fell into a heavy silence.
“You must treat him like he’s made of glass,” the doctor emphasized. “No stress. No emotional trauma. Strictly follow the medication schedule, and absolutely no physical strain. He is… very fragile now.”
Haein’s lips trembled. Her knuckles turned white as she clutched her own hands tightly in her lap. Suho had gone pale, jaw clenched, a single tear slipped from his eye.
“We’ll take care of him,” Suho finally whispered. “He’ll be fine. He has to be.”
The doctor nodded solemnly. “I trust you will. But one more thing….” he paused and looked at both of them, “do not mention Hyesuk-ssi’s death to him. Not now. His heart is already too weak. If he starts crying too hard or gets overwhelmed and panics, it could trigger a cardiac episode and make his condition worser. When you do tell him, make sure it’s gentle…… do not let him break. Make him listen… make him understand softly…”
Both Haein and Suho nodded, eyes filled with quiet devastation. After hearing about his medications they stood slowly, still trying to compose themselves as the weight of reality settled deep in their chests.
And then, without another word, they walked out of the room, hearts heavy, holding onto hope like it was the last thread keeping them alive.
“Oppa… Do you think he will be fine? He will break out completely..” haien asked her voice cracking. Suho sighed and said “he will be fine.. we are there for him… We will be there for him.. we will calm him” suho tried to assure her but his voice itself breaking slightly.
She nodded, wiping her tears tho it fell still. They both walked quietly to Jungkook’s hospital room, where he was still admitted. Eunwoo was asleep in the waiting room.
Suho and Haein gently opened the door to the room and stepped inside. There, their eyes immediately fell on Jungkook.
Their Kook. So small. So fragile.
He lay motionless on the bed, looking far too vulnerable for someone who had always been so brightly. A bandage was wrapped around his head. The oxygen mask still covered half of his face, his breaths steady. Multiple IV lines trailed from his arms, the pale skin, the red nose. He looked like he would break if the wind touched him.
Haein let out a shaky breath, a soft sob escaping her lips. She slowly took steps to his side and sat beside him, her fingers trembling as she reached for his hand. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
“I… I’m sorry, Kook… I’m so sorry…” she whispered, her voice cracking as she gently squeezed his fingers. “Please be okay. Please wake up. Don’t scare me like this… I’m so scared of how you’ll react when you know about Eomma. I don’t want you to break… please, baby, just be fine. Please…”
Her head dipped lower, lips trembling as she clutched his hand like it was the only thing for her to hope.
Suho stood beside them, his face unreadable, but his heart visibly aching. He slowly reached out and brushed Jungkook’s hair back, being as gentle as possible, afraid even the softest touch might hurt him.
His hand trembled slightly, but his fingers moved with care.
The room was silent except for the rhythmic beeping of the monitors and the quiet whir of the oxygen machine. The sight of Jungkook, once so full of life and now lying pale and unmoving, was unbearable.
They stayed like that, Haein sitting beside him, eyes never leaving his face, and Suho brushing his hair, holding onto the hope that he would open his eyes and smile again.
That their Kook would come back to them.
Time skips.
After some time, Suho returned with Eunwoo. Haein sat quietly in the room, eyes fixed on Jungkook, waiting anxiously for him to wake up.
The door slowly opened, revealing Suho. Behind him, Eunwoo followed, clutching onto the back of Suho’s jacket. His eyes were filled with tears. Though Eunwoo was only slightly shorter than Suho, right now, he looked so incredibly small.
“See? He’s fine,” Suho said gently, encouraging Eunwoo to look at Jungkook.
Eunwoo slowly lifted his teary eyes toward the hospital bed. The moment his gaze fell on Jungkook’s pale, fragile figure, lying so still, with an oxygen mask covering his face, his heart shattered.
His lips trembled. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he stumbled forward and collapsed into Suho’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
Seeing his best friend… his brother… in that state tore him apart.
Suho held him tightly, gently stroking his back as the boy cried into his chest.
“Shhh… don’t cry, baby. He’s okay… He’s going to wake up soon, I promise,” Suho whispered, his voice trembling. “He’ll be fine, Eunwoo. Please be strong. Come on, don’t cry like this… you’ve been crying non-stop since yesterday, baby… please…”
But Eunwoo only cried harder. No matter how many words were said, the pain in his heart wouldn’t ease.
Haein went toward Eunwoo and engulfed him in a hug. She kept rubbing his back, trying to calm him down.
“Shhhh, he’s fine, baby… Don’t cry…” she said softly, still rubbing his back.
“H…He is i-in p-pain…” Eunwoo mumbled through his sobs, crying hard.
Haein sighed and slowly broke the hug. “He will be fine… The doctor will shoo away all his pain, hmm? Be strong. He’ll cry if he sees you cry… Do you want that?” Haein asked gently.
Eunwoo shook his head, eyes brimming with tears. “Then stop crying and be strong for him, hmm?” Haein said, wiping Eunwoo’s tears with her thumb.
Eunwoo sniffled and looked at Jungkook.
After a few hours.
Suho had gone out to take care of the procedures for Hyesuk’s funeral. Eunwoo went along with him, insisting he wanted to say goodbye to Hyesuk… his eomma. Haein stayed behind with Jungkook. She was restless, her eyes never leaving him for even a second.
After hours of stillness, she finally saw movement, Jungkook’s hand twitched. Haein immediately stood up and rushed to his side. She saw his brows slightly furrow as his eyelids began to flutter open. His eyes were drowsy, exhausted beyond words.
“Kook… baby… can you h-hear me? It’s me, noona…” Haein spoke softly, hope trembling in her voice.
But Jungkook didn’t respond. He wasn’t fully conscious.
Haein rushed out of the room, calling for the doctor. Within moments, Dr. Hwang arrived with two nurses. He entered swiftly, his gaze sharp but concerned as he approached Jungkook.
He observed Jungkook struggling to stay awake but unable to. He quickly instructed the nurses. They injected a calming fluid into Jungkook’s IV. Dr. Hwang checked his vitals, his pulse, temperature, oxygen levels.
After a long moment, he finally let out a deep sigh, one of relief.
“He’s stable,” he confirmed.
Haein exhaled shakily, a smile breaking through her tears. Finally.. relief. Finally, a little hope.
She looked at Jungkook, watching him fight to open his eyes.
“Kook…” she whispered again.
Jungkook mumbled something low in his slumber, barely audible.
“E…eo…eomma…”
Haein’s heart sank. That one word shattered her.
She sat down beside him, reaching out to hold his hand gently.
“He will wake up soon. Stay with him. If anything happens, call the nurse. I have a surgery now. And if he complains about any headache, inform the nurse immediately, I’ll send my assistant to monitor him. Don’t worry. Be strong,” the doctor said gently before leaving the room in a rush.
Haein nodded and sat down beside Jungkook once more. Her eyes didn’t leave his face, pale and peaceful under the soft glow of the monitor light. His oxygen mask was still secured over his face, the rhythmic beep of the monitor the only sound in the room.
She gently patted his chest, brushing a hand through his damp hair. He looked… too peaceful, too still. And yet, his vulnerability was loud.
She waited, breath held, silently urging him to open his eyes.
And after a few minutes that felt like hours, Jungkook’s eyelids fluttered open.
Haein straightened in her chair, her heart thumping against her ribs as she leaned forward, watching for the moment he recognized her.
He blinked slowly, eyes dull and hazy from the sedative. He was still trying to adjust his vision, struggling to focus.
Haein softly squeezed his hand. “Kookie… baby, it’s me. Noona… You okay? Can you hear me?” she asked gently, voice trembling.
Jungkook whimpered a little in confusion, still dazed. His dry lips parted as he mumbled, “E…eomma…”
That one word pierced through Haein like a blade. Her chest tightened. Her heart broke.
Then, slowly, his eyes landed on her. “Kookie…” she whispered.
Jungkook’s body jolted slightly, he tried to sit up, eyes widening in raw panic. “Eomma… eomma…” he cried, his voice cracking, lips trembling as tears welled up in his eyes.
Haein reached out quickly to hold him down gently. “Kookie, no, baby, please don’t sit up. You’re okay… You’re safe.”
But Jungkook’s tears started flowing freely. The fear in his eyes was pure, childlike, and too vulnerable. He looked around, disoriented and desperate. “Eomma… where is she? I want my eomma…” he sobbed under the mask brokenly.
And Haein… she just sat there, holding his trembling hand, her own tears slipping silently down her cheeks.
How could she tell him the truth? How could she say his mother, his warmth, his safe place, was gone?
“Noona… Eomma…” Jungkook whimpered, his voice broken and weak.
“Shh… shh… Lie down, baby. You’re okay… Don’t cry, don’t panic, Kook,” Haein whispered gently, guiding him back against the pillow with trembling hands.
Jungkook was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling too fast. His teary doe eyes locked on her with panic and confusion. “Noona… W…what happened t..to h..her? Why isn’t s..she here? I w..want my eomma… Eo..eom..eomma!” he cried harder, his small body shaking.
Haein swallowed down the sob building in her heart, she gently held jungkook’s hand and spoke. “Everything’s fine, Kookie… You’re safe… I’m here, baby, I’m here,” she said, her voice cracking with every word. But nothing felt fine. Nothing was.
“Noona… Eomma…” he cried again, desperately clinging to her.
“Kook, don’t cry, baby… Please… You’ll make your condition even worse… Please, don’t cry… Noona’s here…” Haein said, voice cracking.
But Jungkook kept crying hard, his body trembling uncontrollably. “Eomma… Eomma…” he gasped, unable to breathe properly.
“Jungkook, baby, please, calm down! Wait, I’ll call the doctor!” Haein panicked and stood up, rushing out to call for help.
Moments later, Doctor Hwang’d assistant rushed into the room with a nurse. He quickly gave calm, quick instructions.
The nurse injected a light sedative into Jungkook’s IV line, while the doctor gently placed the oxygen mask more securely on Jungkook’s face, guiding him to take deeper breaths.
His panicked breathing slowly began to ease, but the tears didn’t stop. Even as his body calmed, his heart was still breaking.
Haein sat back down beside him and took his hand in both of hers, refusing to let go for even a second.
“Do you feel a headache, kid?” the doctor asked softly.
Jungkook stared at him blankly, then shook his head.
He turned to Haein again, voice barely audible through the mask. “Noona… Eomma…” His eyes shimmered with pain and innocence.
Haein’s heart shattered. She wiped the tears from his cheeks with trembling fingers.
“She… she’s fine,” she whispered, lying through clenched pain. Her voice was soft but hollow.
She hated lying. She hated that she couldn’t tell him the truth. But she also couldn’t risk his health.
“R…really?” Jungkook asked, tears still falling steadily.
Haein nodded slowly, her eyes filled with guilt. “Nae… she’s okay.”
Jungkook’s eyes grew heavier from the sedative. His lids fluttered until they finally closed, his grip on her hand loosening slightly, but not letting go completely.
Haein sat beside him, watching his face as his breathing evened out. She leaned closer, brushing his hair away from his forehead.
“I’m sorry, Kookie… Mianhae…” she whispered through quiet sobs, tears falling one after the other. “I’m so, so sorry…”
Time skips.
Suho and Eunwoo arrived, both dressed in simple casual outfits. As soon as Haein saw Eunwoo, she rushed toward him and engulfed him in a warm hug. He hugged her back tightly, his face pale and tired, his eyes puffy from hours of crying.
“Noona… as you said… I… I said g..goodbye to e…Eo..eomma,” Eunwoo mumbled, his voice cracking as he spoke.
Haein hugged him even tighter, her hand rubbing soothing circles on his back. “You did great, Eun… Mom will be happy. She will always be with you. In every breath you take, she’s there. Her memories and presence will always live inside you, baby,” Haein whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
“R… really?” he asked, looking up at her with broken eyes.
“Hmm… really,” she said, pulling back to wipe his tears gently with her thumb.
“B-but I miss her already… It feels like she’s not with me anymore,” Eunwoo murmured, his eyes falling to the floor as tears streamed down again.
“Believe me, she’s with you, always. You’re not alone. Her love is still wrapped around you, okay?” Suho said, stepping closer and placing a comforting hand on Eunwoo’s shoulder. The boy looked up at Suho, and with trembling fingers, wiped his own tears away.
Eunwoo simply nodded. Then his gaze shifted to the hospital bed, where Jungkook lay motionless, fragile, pale. Now his oxygen mask was removed.
“When… when will he wake up?” Eunwoo asked softly, his voice laced with worry.
“He woke up an hour ago… then fell asleep again,” Haein answered, gently running her fingers through Eunwoo’s hair in a comforting gesture.
Eunwoo nodded again, still watching Jungkook with concern.
“Come on, let’s eat, hmm? You must be hungry,” Suho said, trying to lift the boy’s spirits.
But Eunwoo shook his head quickly. “After he wakes up… I’ll eat after Kookie wakes up,” he whispered.
“He’ll wake up very soon, Eunwoo. Don’t worry… he’ll be fine,” Suho assured him with a warm smile.
Eunwoo gave a slight nod, though his eyes remained locked on Jungkook.
Haein quietly opened the food Suho had brought and started feeding Eunwoo small spoonfuls, her motions slow and gentle. Suho also ate quietly beside them.
But Eunwoo’s eyes kept drifting to Jungkook, unable to look away even for a second.
“Eunwoo-ya,” Haein called softly. He turned to look at her.
“Umm… After Kookie wakes up, he’s going to ask for mom,” she said carefully. “Just tell him s.. she..she’s fine, okay? We’ll explain the truth to him after he’s recovered… If he finds out now, it might break him even more. His body won’t take it. That’s why, baby…”
Eunwoo’s eyes filled with tears again, but he nodded slowly. Understanding.
Suho pulled him into a side hug and whispered gently, “Don’t be sad, Eunwoo… Your soulmate will wake up very, very soon. I promise. He’ll be fine.”
Eunwoo rested his head against Suho’s side, still watching Jungkook. His heart hurt, but he held onto hope tightly, hope that his Kookie would come back to him completely.
After some time, Eunwoo,.who had never once taken his eyes off Jungkook, lsuddenly saw his fingers twitch and his eyelids flutter open.
“Noona… Hyungie… he’s waking up!” Eunwoo said quickly, his voice filled with both relief and anxiety.
Suho and Haein immediately rushed toward the bed. Eunwoo stood behind Suho, peeking out to get a better look at Jungkook.
“Kookie, baby… can you hear us?” Suho asked gently, brushing back Jungkook’s hair with trembling fingers.
Jungkook whimpered softly. His eyes opened, drowsy and glassy. He slowly looked around the room, his gaze settling on Haein, Suho, and then Eunwoo. And the moment his eyes registered where he was, tears welled up instantly.
“Hey, hey… baby, look at me,” Suho said, voice tender but worried. “What happened? Is your head hurting?”
But Jungkook didn’t answer. He kept glancing around weakly, his eyes searching the corners of the room. His face was pale, and his lips trembled.
“H…hy..hyungie… where is eo..eomma?” he asked suddenly, his voice hoarse and barely above a whisper. “Wh..where… where is eomma?”
Suho’s heart shattered at that moment. He swallowed thickly and forced a gentle smile. “S-she’s fine, baby. She’s just… in another room,” he said, barely holding it together.
“R-really?” Jungkook asked, tears spilling down the sides of his face.
Suho nodded, his throat tightening painfully.
And then, Jungkook started crying. Loud, broken sobs left his lips like those of a lost child. His body trembled, his shoulders heaving with the weight of his fear and pain.
“Kookie, hey hey, what’s wrong? What happened?” Haein and Suho both tried to calm him, voices trembling as they panicked. But Jungkook only cried harder.
Eunwoo stood frozen, silent tears streaming down his cheeks as he saw his best friend in that fragile, broken state.
Suddenly, Jungkook stretched his trembling arms toward Haein. Without hesitation, she leaned forward and enveloped him in a hug, holding him as gently as possible.
“Shhh, I’ve got you baby. Noona is here, I’m right here,” she whispered, cradling his shaking frame.
Jungkook clung to her weakly, burying his face into her shoulder. “I… I was scared… Eo-eomma was… there was… b-blood,” he stuttered between gasps and sobs.
Haein and Suho looked at each other, both of them struck silent by guilt. That image, whatever Jungkook saw before his collapse, was haunting him already.
“Don’t cry, baby… please,” Haein said softly, breaking the hug just enough to cup his damp cheeks in her hands. “You’re safe now… it’s okay. You’re okay.”
She noticed how hot his skin was and how drenched he was in sweat. Alarm rose in her chest.
Before Haein could do anything, Suho stepped forward and gently began to unbutton a few buttons on Jungkook’s hospital gown, checking if his body was too overheated. His eyes flicked worriedly to Jungkook’s damp skin. Then he looked up and saw Eunwoo crying uncontrollably again. Without thinking twice, Suho pulled the boy into a warm hug, gently rubbing his back.
“Shh, baby… it’s okay… he’s fine now. I know it hurts, but he’s awake now. It’s going to be okay,” Suho whispered, trying to soothe him.
Meanwhile, Haein was still sitting beside Jungkook, doing everything she could to calm him down. Her hand gently moved over his chest in slow circles, whispering soft reassurances until, eventually, Jungkook’s sobs started to quieten. His body stopped trembling so much, and his breathing returned to a gentler pace.
“You okay now? Do you feel any headache or pain anywhere, baby?” she asked softly, brushing back his damp hair.
Jungkook slowly shook his head, eyes still glassy. “No…” he whispered.
Haein sighed in relief, letting her shoulders relax a little. Then she glanced at Eunwoo, who was still crying, his face buried in Suho’s chest.
“Kookie,” she said gently, “your best friend been crying nonstop for you. Tell him not to cry anymore, hmm?”
Jungkook sniffled, his tired eyes turning toward Eunwoo. “E-Eunwoo,” he called weakly.
Eunwoo immediately lifted his head, his cheeks tear-stained and lips trembling. “D-Don’t cry… I’m fine,” Jungkook said, voice hoarse but sincere.
“R-Really?” Eunwoo asked, a flicker of hope lighting his face.
“Nae…” Jungkook nodded slowly.
Finally, Eunwoo wiped his tears with the back of his sleeve and walked over to Jungkook’s side. He carefully leaned down, wrapping his arms gently around Jungkook’s fragile body in a cautious hug.
“I… I was scared,” Eunwoo murmured, his voice cracking. “You idiot always make me worry for you.”
“S-Sorry, Eun… I… I’m really fine now,” Jungkook said again, trying his best to smile for him, though it came out small and tired.
Eunwoo nodded, holding his best friend just a little tighter. Jungkook snuggled more to eunwoo. Resting his temred head on his. Finally haein and suho felt a bit relieved.
After Two Days
Haein was sleeping beside Jungkook, her head resting low on the bed, loosely holding his hand. The room was quiet, and Jungkook was sleeping peacefully, or so it seemed. Eunwoo and Suho were at home, as Haein had asked Suho to take Eunwoo back for some rest.
Suddenly, Jungkook whimpered and stirred. His eyes fluttered open, only for him to immediately regret waking up. A sharp pain pierced through his head. He clutched it tightly, letting out a shaky cry.
“Ahh…” he whimpered, his eyes instantly welling up with tears.
It was new. The pain. Unlike anything he had felt before. The day before, he’d felt a little discomfort but brushed it off, not wanting to worry anyone. But this… this pain was unbearable. His entire body tensed, and the panic set in.
“E…eo…eomma…” he whispered through the tears, clutching his head, his breathing ragged and shallow.
Beside him, Haein stirred at the sound. The moment she opened her eyes and saw him curled up in pain, her heart dropped.
“K-Kookie? Hey, baby! What’s wrong? Is it hurting a lot?” she asked, already reaching for him, wrapping her arms around his trembling body.
Jungkook immediately clung to her, burying his face in her chest like a frightened child.
“H-Hurts…” he whimpered, his voice fragile and cracked, full of helplessness.
“Wait, wait, I’ll call the doctor. You’ll be okay, baby. Just hang on,” Haein said in a panic, gently laying him back and rushing out the room. She yelled for help.
Within moments, Dr. Hwang entered, followed by a nurse. Jungkook was sobbing now, curling into himself from the overwhelming pain.
“Noona… I-It hurts a lot… I c-can’t… I can’t…” he sobbed, barely able to get the words out through his choked breathing. “H-Hurts…”
Haein, trying not to break down, quickly sat beside him again and pulled him back into her arms, cradling him like a baby.
“Shhh, baby, I’m here… I’m right here. It’s okay. Breathe, Kookie… please just breathe,” she whispered, her own eyes shining with tears. “The doctor uncle is here, he’s going to take the pain away, okay?”
Meanwhile, Dr. Hwang instructed the nurse to inject a pain relief sedative into Jungkook’s IV. She did so. Then, Dr. Hwang turned to Haein and gently gestured for her to move aside so he could examine Jungkook more closely.
Haein hesitated and slowly stood, about to step back, but Jungkook’s trembling hand reached out and clutched hers tightly.
“D-Don’t… don’t leave,” he sobbed, his voice raw and broken.
Haein’s throat tightened. She swallowed hard and nodded, staying right beside him. Her hand wrapped firmly around his, her other hand softly stroking his damp hair.
Dr. Hwang glanced at them, his expression softening even more. When he spoke to Jungkook, his voice was unlike the usual clinical tone he used with others. It was gentle. Soo Soft.
“Kook… take a breath,” he said quietly, crouching a little to be eye level. “You’re going to be okay. We’re right here with you. I promise I’ll make the pain go away… No more hurting, hmm? Just breathe with me.”
Jungkook tried, he really did, but instead of a calm breath, it came out as a choked sob. He coughed through the tears, his whole frame shaking. He shook his head in panic, unable to calm down.
Seeing that, the doctor moved quickly. He unfastened a few of Jungkook’s shirt buttons to allow better airflow across his overheating chest. With practiced, gentle hands, he rubbed Jungkook’s chest in slow circles to help regulate his breathing.
“Prepare the oxygen mask with calming sedatives,” Dr. Hwang instructed the nurse urgently.
The nurse nodded and hurried out.
Suddenly, Jungkook whimpered louder, “Ahhh!” His voice cracked sharply as he cried harder and clutched his head in pain once again. His fingers shook as they brushed beneath his nose, and came back stained with crimson.
“N-No…” he whimpered, terrified, looking at the blood on his fingers.
Haein gasped in horror. “Oh my god… Kookie…”
Dr. Hwang moved instantly, grabbing tissues as he leaned in. “Hey, hey, shhh… You’re okay. You’re okay,” he said quickly, gently wiping the blood from Jungkook’s nose. “Nothing’s happening to you, I promise. This is part of the strain, your body’s just reacting.”
But Jungkook kept crying harder. His breaths came out in short, panicked gasps, tears spilling down his cheeks as he shook from pain and fear.
“I-I’m scared… it hurts… e-eomma…” he whimpered, eyes unfocused, lips trembling.
Haein’s heart shattered. She bent over him, wrapping her arms protectively around his upper body while the doctor worked beside her.
“I’m here, baby. Noona is here… You’re not alone. You’re safe. Everything’s going to be okay, please just hold on,” she whispered shakily into his ear, trying to keep herself together.
Jungkook gripped her tighter like a frightened child as if letting go would make everything worse.
Soon, the nurse returned with the equipment. The doctor gently placed the oxygen mask over Jungkook’s nose and mouth, carefully holding the back of his head to support him.
“On the count of three, take a deep breath and exhale, hmm? You’ll be fine,” the doctor instructed gently.
Jungkook didn’t respond, he was too exhausted, too scared, but his watery eyes fluttered in acknowledgment.
“Come on, Kook… You can do this. One… two… three…” the doctor counted softly.
Jungkook inhaled shakily, and though it was difficult, he did as told, breathing in deeply and letting it out with a faint whimper. The calming sedatives began to work almost instantly, taking effect with the oxygen flow.
His breathing started to slow. His cries softened. His eyes grew heavy, the weight of exhaustion and medication dragging him down. A final tear slipped from the corner of his eye before his lids finally closed, and he drifted into a deep sleep.
The doctor, nurse, and Haein all sighed in collective relief.
He was calm now. Safe, for the moment.
The doctor prepared another injection, for the pain management, and carefully administered it through Jungkook’s IV. Even in his sleep, Jungkook whimpered softly from the sting, his tiny body twitching slightly.
Despite being asleep, Jungkook’s hand still loosely held onto Haein’s. That weak but meaningful grip hadn’t fully let go. Haein, with tear-streaked cheeks, clutched his hand tightly as if afraid that if she let go, he might disappear forever.
Still staring at him, her voice barely above a whisper, she asked, “He will be okay… right?”
Without looking at her, the doctor sighed and spoke, his tone heavy.
“He will live… but he will have to fight through this every day. This pain he experienced todad… It won’t be the last. Headaches, dizziness, sometimes even fainting, those will be part of his life for now,” the doctor said quietly. “His body is adjusting, and over time, he may start treating this level of pain as something normal… like how someone gets used to a normal headache.”
Haein’s heart sank. Her tears fell silently as she looked at Jungkook. so pale, so still, yet still so deeply fragile.
“Take care of him. Be strong,” the doctor added gently, then turned and exited the room with the nurse, leaving them alone.
The room was quiet now, except for the soft hum of the machines and the gentle whoosh of the oxygen.
Haein didn’t move. She just sat there, clutching his hand, brushing his hair off his forehead with a trembling hand.
“P-Please be okay… please don’t scare me like this again,” she whispered, her voice cracking.
She gently wiped the sweat and dried tears from his face with her palm, careful not to wake him. But her own tears wouldn’t stop, not tonight.
She stayed there, watching him breathe, praying silently that the boy she loved like her own brother would make it through another night.
