Chapter 88
Jin held Jungkook’s hand all the way to the ground floor, but as they stepped out of the elevator, Jungkook pulled his hand away. His fists clenched tightly, and his expression was quiet, haunted & hurt. Jin looked at him in confusion, but said nothing. He reached out again to hold Jungkook’s hand, but the younger refused. So Jin simply took hold of his wrist gently and led him toward the parking area.
“I… I’ll come by my b-bike,” Jungkook muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jin sighed, stopping for a moment to face him. “You’re not in your right state, Kook. You look terrified,” he said calmly, though worry laced every word. “I’ll ask one of the guards to bring it. Just come with me, alright?”
Jungkook didn’t respond. He looked away, biting his lower lip, as if holding something in. Jin didn’t argue. Without another word, he gently but firmly pulled Jungkook toward the car.
He opened the front passenger door and guided Jungkook in, helping him settle into the seat. Then he walked around and got into the driver’s seat himself, buckling his seatbelt with a soft click.
“Put your seatbelt on, Kook,” Jin said, his voice tender.
Jungkook nodded absently and reached for the belt. But his hands trembled uncontrollably, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t clip it into place.
Jin noticed immediately. His heart clenched. “Hey, it’s okay,” he murmured, leaning over and gently taking the seatbelt from Jungkook’s shaky hands. He clicked it in for him without making a big deal of it.
Jungkook stared at him silently, his eyes wide, still filled with fear he couldn’t speak.bJin reached for the bottle of water on the dashboard, unscrewed the cap, and handed it over softly saying “Here. Drink slowly, hmm?”
Jungkook took it wordlessly and brought it to his lips. He drank in small, trembling sips, the cool water calming him bit by bit but not fully.
Once he seemed to calm, Jin started the car. The first few minutes of the drive passed in heavy silence. Only the low hum of the engine filled the space between them.
Finally, Jin spoke, his eyes flicking toward the younger briefly. “Why are you sweating so much, Kook? Do you feel dizzy or any uneasiness?” His voice was low, concerned.
Jungkook only shook his head, refusing to meet Jin’s eyes. He didn’t say a word. Jin’s hands gripped the steering wheel just a little tighter, the worry gnawing at him.
Jungkook looked away, his gaze drifting out the window as he noticed the faint drizzle starting to blur the city lights. His mind was spinning with too many thoughts, each one darker than the last. His chest felt tight.
He was terrified. Terrified of what might happen if Kim found out that Jin and the others knew about him in the mafia. Kim had warned him clearly if anyone ever found out, there would be consequences. He had said it with that cruel calmness that made Jungkook’s blood run cold. “If they ever know, you’ll pay for it. I’ll make sure to show you the real hell.”
Jungkook’s heart ached just remembering it. His fingers clenched on his lap as he tried to normal his breathing, silently, not wanting Jin to notice. But the panic was rising rapidly.
Jin noticed. He’d been watching him quietly the whole ride, concerned with every shiver, every twitch of the boy’s hand. Without a word, Jin gently pulled the car over to the side of the highway and turned off the engine. The soft patter of rain on the windshield filled the silence.
“Kook, look at me,” Jin said softly. Jungkook didn’t respond. He kept staring at his lap, biting the inside of his cheek.
“Jungkook…” Jin’s voice was firmer now, but still soft. “I asked you to look at me.” Slowly, hesitantly, Jungkook turned his head. Jin’s heart sank the moment he saw his face, drenched in sweat, flushed red, his eyes glassy and wide with fear.
“Baby… what’s wrong?” Jin whispered, gently brushing the damp hair off Jungkook’s forehead. “Is something bothering you? Why are you panicking, hmm?”
“I… I’m fine,” Jungkook stammered, his voice shaky and unconvincing.
Jin didn’t believe it though. He sighed softly, pulling out a clean kerchief from his pocket and carefully wiping the sweat from Jungkook’s face.
“Did she scold you….. a lot?” jin asked gently. Jungkook shook his head silently. “Then why?” Jin asked again, searching his face.
But Jungkook only turned away, staring back out the window, refusing to answer. His jaw was tight, his shoulders stiff.
Jin didn’t push. Jin gently took Jungkook’s cold hand in his own, his thumb brushing over the trembling fingers. “Are you angry at me, hmm? Angry that I didn’t tell you… that I know?” Jin’s voice was quiet, almost hesitant.
Jungkook didn’t respond at first. The silence between them was thick, only the faint hum of the car’s engine and the sound of drizzles was heard. After a long moment, he finally spoke, his voice so low “I’m angry at me.” Jin’s brows furrowed. “Why, Kook?”
But Jungkook stayed silent. His gaze dropped to his lap, lips pressed together as though holding back words… or maybe emotions. Slowly, Jin noticed the change the slight hitch in his breathing, the way his shoulders trembled. His chest rose and fell faster, uneven, and his eyes fluttered shut as if trying to block out the world.
Panic stirred inside Jin. Jin saw him getting another panic attack. “Kookie…… hey, look at me, baby,” Jin urged softly, rolling the windows down slightly to let the cool night air in. “You’re fine. I’m right here. Just breathe for me, please. In….. and out….. come on, you can do it. You’re really brave, don’t panic. Hyung is here with you.”
But his gentle words seemed to break Jungkook even more. It didn’t calm him instead it made him feel more guilty and vulnerable. He felt lyk he don’t deserve these comforts. His breathing grew heavier, sharp gasps leaving his lips. “Ahhh…” he winced in pain. His hand shot up to clutch his chest tightly, as if someone had stabber a knife straight in his heart.
Jin felt like his heart nearly stopped. “Hey, hey, Kookie baby! What happened, bun? Is it hurting?!” He was already leaning closer, gripping Jungkook’s hand firmly. “Let’s go to the hospital, hmm? You’ll be fine, just be fine please…. Don’t scare me like this.”
Jungkook only shook his head miserably, eyes still tightly shut. A tear slipped down his pale cheek, and he but his lips as he tried to bear the pain in silence.
“Shhh… I’m here, baby. Just hold on,” Jin murmured, his voice trembling he was worried as hell and felt really bad to see his brother in sudden pain. He kept talking to him, every word laced with fear and love, as Jungkook clung tightly to his hand like it was the only thing keeping him grounded. Jin didn’t let go, not for a single second.
After a few minutes of hell, Jungkook finally let out a sigh of relief when the pain finally left. He heard Jin saying, “Follow me, Kook, you will be fine. Take a deep breath, hmm? In and out, just follow my breaths, hmm?” Jin said.
Jungkook looked at him with teary eyes and nodded. Then Jin took a deep breath and Jungkook tried, but only coughed. Jin held Jungkook’s hand tightly and said, “You can do it, Kook,” he encouraged him and did some breaths, and Jungkook followed him. After minutes, Jungkook finally calmed, and Jin took the water and made him drink again.
“Do you feel pain, bun?” Jin asked, wiping Jungkook’s sweat on his head. Jungkook shook his head as no. Then Jin asked, “I’ll call the doctor and ask him to come home to check on you, hmm?” Jin said, taking out his mobile but stopped when Jungkook said, “No need…… I am fine, i-it’s normal.” Jungkook said lowly.
“What do you mean by normal? Are you getting these usually?” Jin asked, his voice was calm. “I… I get it sometimes,” Jungkook said slowly, looking down. Jin looked at him in disbelief.
“What do you mean by sometimes, Kook? Are you getting these frequently?” Jin asked sternly. He clearly looked so angry right now. Jungkook shook his head as no, not speaking a word. “Jungkook, use your words. Are you getting the pains and panic attacks frequently?” Jin asked, clearly frustrated and more than that worried.
“N.. no, just s.. sometimes,” Jungkook stuttered. Jin tried to calm himself, he was worried as hell. His brother was getting panic attacks and pains, and he didn’t know about them.
“What about before the day you got severe? Was it too much just like this? The doctor said you were straining yourself. Are you still straining yourself? Or is it the stress?” Jin asked, but a little calmer now.
Jungkook kept silent. Jin sighed at the younger’s silence.
Jin felt really bad. How could he not notice his younger brother’s silent pains and tears? Where was he when Jungkook was gasping for air and in pain? He had promised his brother to keep him safe, but why couldn’t he? Was it his fault that he wasn’t able to see his younger’s locked pain? He did everything to keep him safe and keep him away from the pain. But…… seeing that he couldn’t really keep his promise properly made him angry at himself.
Meanwhile, with Eunwoo.
Eunwoo and Chaeyoung were walking on the streets. Chaeyoung was speaking to him, trying to engage him in a proper conversation, but Eunwoo was lost in his own world, just responding to her with a hum or a single word as an answer.
“I don’t know what we’re gonna do for the project….. it’s so frustrating. Why is it so tough? Ahhhh…. I should go and search about that goddamn project!” Chaeyoung said. Eunwoo hummed nonchalantly.
“Hey… what happened to Jungkook? Do you know anything? He started walking away so fast without a word. He seemed angry… and also pale. You were with him, right? Did you both fight again?” Chaeyoung asked.
“Don’t know… I just went to use the restroom. I didn’t speak with him,” Eunwoo said, his voice calm and nonchalant.
Chaeyoung frowned at his calm answer. She could tell, without a doubt….. that something had happened. His tone might be even, but his eyes… they betrayed him.
She sighed, then grabbed his wrist and dragged him toward the small park they were passing. Without saying a word, she sat down on one of the swings, gestured him to take the one beside her. The chains creaked softly as they both began to sway.
“Now tell me eun..… what happened?” Chaeyoung asked, her eyes fixed on him as she gently swinged back and forth.
Eunwoo’s gaze stayed low, feet brushing the ground. “I said na… nothing happened. I didn’t speak to h-him,” he said, but his voice cracked at the end..
Chaeyoung’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Yahh, you moron,” she said clearly frustrated, “I asked you to tell me what happened. Don’t make me bring a knife and threaten you just to get the truth. Just tell me, Eun. You look really ugly with that sad face.”
Her tone was playful, but her eyes were sharp, concern hidden under the teasing. Eunwoo let out a shaky sigh. “I’m saying the truth, only! Nothing happened between us.”
Chaeyoung’s brows knitted tighter. “Then why are you sad, huh?” she pressed, her voice soft but demanding.
“I’m not,” Eunwoo said, pushing the ground lightly with his foot, the swing moving in slow “Yahh, you moron!” she burst out, louder this time.
“You’re really testing my patience, Eun.”
Eunwoo let out a short chuckle that didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m telling the truth only, Chaeyoungie. I’m not sad… I… I’m just angry.” His voice dipped low at the end.
Chaeyoung frowned and asked, “First, what is going on with him and you, huh? Why do you both always throw harsh words at each other, get mad, and fight like that, huh? Your fights are really scary and so harsh. Why are you angry at him?” Chaeyoung asked her voice was demanding.
Eunwoo chuckled bitterly and said, “Hmm… I am angry at him. I hate him a lot. I hate him to the core of my heart, and I can’t forgive him ever. I really hate that Kim Jungkook.” His voice was calm, almost too calm for the weight of his words. “Why?” Chaeyoung asked.
“’Cause… he left me… without a bye. But with some bitter words. He betrayed me. He just left like I didn’t matter to him,” Eunwoo said lowly and looked down at his feets.
Chaeyoung frowned at him but stayed silent. “H…. h-he was my best friend… my closest… my soulmate!” Eunwoo said, his voice breaking as his eyes began to tear up. Chaeyoung’s eyes widened.
“And…. and I hurt him… I hurt him a lot. I… I am angry at m-myself. I hate myself for hating him this much,” Eunwoo said, his tears flowing continuously now. He broke down completely, so mad at himself for everything. He covered his face with his palms, trying to supress his cried but couldn’t..
Chaeyoung looked at him in shock; she didn’t know he had been holding this much inside. She slowly stood and went to Eunwoo, gently hugging him, and that was when he finally broke down fully. He cried and cried and cried.
“Yahh, why are you crying like this, Eun?” Chaeyoung asked, her own eyes turning teary at his breakdown.
Chaeyoung was really surprised to see him cry like this. Eunwoo was always bubly and cheeky, he only cries when it’s too much.
Then she heard eunwoo saying in between his cries. “I… I miss him… but I h-hate him……. Y-you know what… I saw him smile today… after years. I saw his freaking smile after years! H-he’s in p-pain… I know him… I… I am sure… he is hurting h-himself. H-he’s an idiot. H-he won’t take c-care of himself. I really want to be t-there for h-him.” Chaeyoung wasnt able to say a word. Se was surprised. She just listened to him.
“I want to s-scold him a lot for not taking care of himself, for abandoning me and especially for not smiling. I want to yell at him, fight with him, play with him, eat with him, sleep with him, bicker over shakes….. I want to do everything…. I want to shout and smack his head for leaving me alone. I hate him… I hate him a lot, Chaeyoungie… b-but I really miss him a lot. H… he said he doesn’t deserve to smile…… w-why? Why can’t he? H…. he’s so silent now. I hate this Jungkook..… I…. I want my Kook…… I miss him so much,” Eunwoo said, crying hard in Chaeyoung’s shoulders.
And Chaeyoung….. she just heard him. She didn’t say anything; she kept patting him and listening to him. She was so shocked to hear Eunwoo cry like this for his best friend whom he hates now but also misses him.
