Ve akhiyan nu tak len de….
Ve sajna aje na jaaa…..

When she walked into that Galla prep party, I swear even the chandeliers stopped shining for a second.

Vani Rathore.

In a deep black saree, hair left loose, Looking like she already won the deal or perfectly ruined my peace.

I am not praising her, I swear.

Of course she didn’t wait for me.
Just marched ahead on the floor.

I caught up anyway.
“Zara dheere chalogi? It’s not a race,” I muttered under my breath.

( Can you walk slow?)

She didn’t even spare me a glance.
“If it was, you’d be last anyway.”

Ouch.
Start ho gayi yeh fir se.

( She’ve started again )

I grinned.
“Don’t worry, Miss Rathore. You might reach first, but you’ll still look back. At me.”

This time she did glance sideways, raising a brow.
“Keep dreaming, Mr. Brar. That’s all you’re good at anyway.”

✧

We reached the table. Subh and Ayanshi were already sitting there.

Subh kept fiddling with his pen & Ayanshi was busy scrolling her phone with furrow brows like she was solving world hunger.

Vani got busy with the organizer immediately, flipping charts, asking about budgets, deadlines.

I stand with the a familiar face, but all my attention was on hers.

God. Even her anger was graceful.
Haan, of course I’d never say it to her face.

I take a glimpse at subh, and ayanshi’s table and they were talking about something.

At the table;

Subh’s voice broke quietly:
“Aayiu…”

No response.

“Please. Just talk to me once?”

Her eyes flicked to him, sharp and cold, before she answered.

“What’s left to talk about?”

“You know whatever happened between Vani di and nav was a misunderstanding and-“

“It wasn’t just a misunderstanding for her. She suffered so much in silence, and directly or indirectly your brother was the reason. My di ia everything for me. I repeat everything.” she cut in, her voice just above a whisper but slicing all the same.

” and some things don’t get fixed because you said sorry.” she said and got up from her seat and went outside

He didn’t follow.
He Stare into nothing.

He stayed quiet.

But words weren’t enough to describe what was happening between them.

✧

When Vani finally sat down next to me again, I leaned just close enough so only she could hear:
“You’re bossing everyone around so much, even the lights are getting scared of you.”

She didn’t look up.
“Iska matlb tum mujhse dar rahe ho? Itni si baat pe? Tsk tsk tsk! What a man you are.”

( That means you are scared of me? On this little thing?)

This kareli-

I chuckled softly and muttered,
“You’re lucky you look good saying that, Miss Rathore. Warna-“

( Otherwise)

“Warna kya?” she cut in, finally meeting my gaze with that stubborn glare.

( Otherwise what? )

Oh-ho-ho.

I leaned closer, smirk playing on my lips.
“Warna main-” I paused deliberately, my eyes dropping just slightly before coming back to hers-
“-I would have shut your mouth, and not with words.”

( Otherwise)

Her eyes widened for a split second, and then she scoffed,Then rolled her eyes so dramatically, I almost laughed.

His eyes hadn’t left me all evening.
And I hated that I… noticed.

When I finally caught him staring again, I raised a brow.
“Problem?” I asked coolly.

He just tilted his head lazily, lips quirking into that irritating smirk.
“No. Bas dekh raha hoon… kis tarah tum sabko daant ke bhi itni… achhi lag sakti ho.”

( “No. I’m just watching… how you can scold everyone and still look so… good.”)

I froze.
Just for a second.
Then forced myself to scoff.

“You think that’s a compliment?” I muttered.

He leaned back in his chair, arms crossed.
“Nahi. Reality check hai.”

( No, thats the reality check )

I rolled my eyes and went back to the papers –

And when he leaned closer again, just enough for his breath to tickle my ear, and whispered,
“Bura toh nahi laga na?”

( You didn’t felt bad do you? )

I didn’t answer.
Because if I did… I might’ve smiled.

✧

The room was loud – laughter, glasses clinking, papers shuffling – but my mind was already somewhere else.
On the schedule, the contracts, the numbers.

I stood by the refreshment table, flipping through the printouts when a man stopped in front of me.
Sharp suit. Polished smile.
He held out the tray infront of me of glass filled with drinks

“You’ve been working too hard,” he said lightly.
“Here. Have something to drink.”

I shook my head politely.
“No, thank you. I don’t drink.”

His smile softened.
“It’s just juice. You’ve barely sat down all evening. Please. Stay hydrated, Miss Rathore.”

” No, thank you.” I said and get back to my papers.

His smile didn’t flatter
” ma’am its complimentary, and we are strictly ordered that any guest shouldn’t be empty handed. Maam please take it, my job will me on stike otherwise.”

I hesitated.
His tone was so gentle… it felt almost rude to refuse again.

I took the glass, muttering,
“Fine. Thanks.”

He nodded and walked away.

I stared at the glass for a second.
Maybe I was imagining it – but… something about that left a faint chill in my stomach.
I almost put it back on the table.

Almost.

But my throat felt dry, so I brought it to my lips anyway.
One sip. Then another.

And then –

That feeling.

Like someone’s eyes are digging into you?

I froze, glass halfway down, and looked around.
Everyone looked busy – papers, screens, conversations.
No one was looking at me.

Was it just in my head?

I swallowed and set the glass down.

But almost instantly, the air felt… heavy.
My cheeks flushed.
My head feel heavy.

What the-

My fingers automatically curled tight around the edge of the table as I feel dizzy.

I blinked hard, trying to steady myself when a hand landed on my arm.

“You okay?” a man’s voice said, low and calm.
“You don’t look well. I’ll take you to the doctor.”

I flinched back, my instinct screaming that his touch was wrong.

“No,” I said, shaking my head, trying to pull my arm back.
“I… I’m fine.”

But he didn’t let me go.
His fingers tightened slightly.
“Miss Rathore,” he murmured, “let me help you-“

“No!”

I yanked myself free, stumbling a few steps toward the exit.
My legs felt like lead, my vision swimming.
My shoulder hit the wall and I used it to keep myself steady.

My phone rings faintly in my hand.

Nav.

His name flashed on the screen, but even holding the phone steady felt like a fight.

I answered, my breath heavy
“H… hello…”

“Vani?” His voice was sharp.
” what happened? Where are you? Answer me properly!”

My lips parted but no words came.

“N… Nav…” I managed to whisper, but even saying his name felt like too much.

The hallway looked longer and darker as I stumbled forward, I tried to take balance with my palm on the wall.

Footsteps.
I could hear them.

Behind me.
Closer now.

I couldn’t turn around.
Couldn’t even focus.

My phone slipped from my fingers and hit the floor with a dull sound.

And then –

Everything went black.

she started spinning in the middle of the living room, her saree end flying around.
“Dekho! Moon! Dekho kitna bada moon!!” she shouted, pointing at the ceiling light.

( Look moom, soo big moon)

“It’s a bulb, Vani. BULB.” I muttered, stirring the dal.

She ignored me completely, climbed up on the sofa, and tried to catch the moon with both hands.
When that didn’t work, she jumped down, Marched toward me, and ruffled my hair hard.

“Bhoot!” she giggled.
“Tum bhoot ho!!”

( Ghost.. you are ghost)

I froze, spatula in my hand.
“What did you just call me?!”

“Bhoot ho… cute bhoot,”
( Ghost…cute ghost ..)
