Vani was lying unconscious on the bed while the doctor examined her.
Nav stood beside them, arms crossed tightly over his chest. His jaw was clenched, and his forehead creased with worry.
“Doctor, hua kya hai akhir use? Why did she suddenly faint?” Nav asked for what felt like the hundredth time.
His voice carried impatience, fear, and frustration all at once.
“Ab examine karne do mujhe… tabhi to bata paungi na?” the doctor replied calmly.
(Let me examine her first… only then I’ll be able to tell you.)
Nav ran a hand through his hair restlessly, pacing once before stopping again beside the bed.
“Sirf examine hi to kar rahi hain aap… bata kuch nahi rahi.”
(You’re only examining… you’re not telling us anything.)
His voice was tight with tension.
“Dehydration, sudden stress and-“
Before the doctor could finish, Randeep lightly smacked the back of Nav’s head.
“Sab teri wajah se hua hai,” he scolded. “Itna bada ho gaya hai lekin akal nahi aayi.”
(This all happened because of you. You’ve grown up but still haven’t got any sense.)
Nav didn’t argue back.
He was already tense, already on the verge of breaking.
His eyes stayed fixed on Vani’s pale face.
“Are let me complete at least,” the doctor said, stopping both of them before their argument could continue.
“She might be pregnant. We’ll run some tests to make sure. For now I’ve given her an injection. Bring her to my clinic after some days. For now I’ll write down some medicine, for the recovery. When the patient feels no more weakness, take her to my clinic.”
For a moment-
No one spoke.
Everyone’s faces slowly lit up with excitement after hearing this.
someone was laughing
someone was hugging someone
someone was teasing Nav
But Nav,
Nav stood frozen in his place.
He didn’t move an inch.
He didn’t replied to anyone.
Randeep placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Nav? Tu theek hai?” he asked, concern clear in his voice.
Everyone looked at him worriedly.
Nav slowly turned to look at his father, his lips slightly parted in disbelief.
“I am going to be a father?” he asked quietly.
Before Randeep could answer, Nav suddenly pulled him into a tight hug.
“I am going to be a father, dad.”
His voice trembled slightly with emotion.
“I am going to be a father.”
He kept repeating those words, almost as if he still couldn’t believe them himself.
Everyone sighed in relief hearing this
” haan hann mere bache .. tu bachon ka baap banne wala hai …” randeep said while chuckling
” ajj se jo bhi ghar mein kam hoga sab vani ki pasnd se hoga …jo bhi usko khanna hai ya koch bhi … We’ll inform the servants.” Randeep said
” are servants kyu? Mai bna ke dungi na … Chahe raat ke 2 bje utha lena….”
Jasmeet said excitedly
Randeep looked at her
” haan jese tum mujhe uthati thi aur kitchen mai bhejti thi??” he said and everyone laughed at this
” app bada bna dete the… Papa se dande hi khaye hai apne raat ko.” jasmeet said while rolling her eyes
” yaad maat dilao mujhe… Kosis to karta tha na bnane ki.” randeep said and laughter filled the room.

Later that evening, Nav had changed his clothes.
Vani still lay unconscious on the bed.
Nav sat on the couch beside the bed, quietly watching her.
His eyes never left her face.
His brows furrow,
In his mind, a thousand thoughts raced at once.
A thousand possibilities.
A thousand dreams.
A boy or a Girl
Which school ?
Which toys?
Which clothing brand will be the best and soft?
All for a child…
who hadn’t even been born yet.
Vani slowly stirred.
The moment Nav noticed the slight movement, he immediately rushed to her and helped her sit up carefully.
“Paani…” she murmured weakly.
( Water)
Nav quickly poured her a glass of water and held it for her.
“How are you feeling?” he asked softly, taking the glass back once she finished drinking.
“Just tired… and my head is aching badly. I want to sleep more,” she whined, leaning slightly into his arms.
“Aww, mera bacha,” he murmured gently, caressing her head.
He slowly pulled her back a little so she could look at him.
His hands cupped her cheeks as she stared at him in confusion.
“What happened?” she asked, her voice still heavy with sleep.
Nav didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he smiled slightly.
“Come.”
He held her hand and guided her toward the mirror.
“Come with me.”
He stood behind her, wrapping his arms around her gently as she looked at their reflection.
“Kar kya rahe ho tum?”
(What are you doing?)
She looked at him through the mirror, still confused.
Nav stood behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist.
Their reflection stared back at them through the mirror.
“How would you feel… if we had a miniature Navveer?” he murmured softly.
His hands slowly moved from her waist to rest gently on her stomach.
Vani followed the movement with her eyes.
Then she looked up at him through the mirror.
“Am I pregnant?” she asked, barely above a whisper.
Nav exhaled slowly.
“Maybe,” he said. “Doctor still needs to run some tests.”
She turned around to face him fully.
“Then let’s test.”
Her eyes sparkled with sudden excitement.
Nav smirked slightly.
Without saying anything, he pulled a small pregnancy kit from his pocket.
Her eyes widened.
“You came prepared?”
“I know you, love..”
“Pagal,” she muttered, grabbing the kit from his hand before disappearing into the bathroom.
Nav started pacing outside.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
The few minutes felt like hours.
Finally the bathroom door opened.
Vani stepped out holding the kit.
Nav immediately looked at it.
“One line…” he murmured quietly.
For a moment disappointment crossed his face.
“But it’s okay. We’ll try again-“
“Bewakoof.”
She placed the kit on the table.
“Time lagta hai. Wait for a few minutes.”
She sat down on the couch.
Nav sat beside her.
Just as he reached for the kit again-
She slapped his hand away.
“It’s unhygienic. Don’t touch it.”
Nav rolled his eyes dramatically.
“Oh really?”
He leaned closer.
“Coming on my face wasn’t unhygienic for you?”
“And it’s your favourite too.”
Vani froze.
Her cheeks turned red instantly.
For once-
She had absolutely nothing to say.
Just as they looked at the kit again-
A second line slowly appeared.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Nav blinked.
Vani stared at the kit again, as if making sure her eyes weren’t playing tricks on her.
Then both looked at each other.
“It’s positive.”
Their voices came out at the same time.
Silence lasted only a second before Nav suddenly pulled her into a tight hug.
“We’re going to be parents,” he whispered.
The words felt unreal even as he said them.
The next moment, excitement exploded inside him.
“I am going to be a father
I am going to be a father
I am going to be a father
I am going to be a father”
He lifted her straight off the floor and spun her around.
“Nav! Ke bacche!” she shouted, half laughing, half panicking.
“9 mahine baad honge!” he laughed.
“Bas karo! Mujhe chakkar aa raha hai!”
He instantly stopped and carefully placed her back on the ground.
But his hands stayed around her waist.
“Oh-sorry… sorry,” he said sheepishly.
Then he grinned.
He cupped her face, and joined their foreheads together..
” Thank you. Thank you so much vani. ”
“Vani… I’m so excited to have a little Vani.”
She folded her arms, and pulled herself away a little.
“Kyuu? Mujhe little Nav chahiye.”
He chuckled.
“nahi agar chota Nav hua na… bilkul shaitan hoga.”
Vani pointed at him as if saying that he is shaitan
” shaitan ka bacha bhi shaitan? Mujhe chalega. ” she said
Nav narrow his eyes and continued
“Mujhe to pyaari si choti Vani chahiye.”
She looked at him mischievously.
“but mujhe to chota sa nav chihe, I’ll watch your childhood through him..”
Nav leaned closer.
“Bahut DVD’s hai mere paas, mere bachpan ki, woh sab dikha dunga tumhein.”
Then he gently tapped her nose.
“But chihe to mujhe vani hi.”
” jeee nahi… Beta hoga … Pta I’ll make his room.. sab koch blue rakhugi… he’ll be a gentleman just like you… Itna payara sa chotu sa hoga na woh…mene to uska naam bhi socha hai… Vanav … Nav aur vani ka mixture… Nahi.. acha nahi hai na… Tum soch lena…”
” hadh hai.. navani rkh denge… Payari si ladki.. aur yeh acha bhi hai… Aur hamre room mai hi soyegi woh.. aur chlo blue rkhdenge kamre ka colour no problem… But nanhi pari hogi..”
Behind them
Randeep and Jasmeet stood near the door.
Quietly smiling as they watched the two of them argue about a baby who hadn’t even arrived yet.
✧
After some days
At the gynecologist’s room, Dr. Radhika was checking Vani’s reports while Nav and Vani sat together.
Before she could say anything, Nav’s phone buzzed.
He hung up the call.
The phone buzzed again.
Annoyed, he hung up once more.
Vani leaned slightly and glanced at his screen.
“Utha lo na,” Vani said.
“Pagal hai yeh bilkul. Isse samajh nahi aata ki insaan nahi uth raha toh kuch kaam hoga,” Nav muttered, clearly getting annoyed.
“Aur agar usse koi kaam hua toh? Hmm? Utha lo aur baat kar lo. I am here,” she said reluctantly.
Nav sighed and stepped outside to take the call.
He walked out and dialed the number.
“Haan bol?”
“I think I killed someone,” the voice on the other side said urgently.
Nav froze.
“Huh? Kya bol raha hai, kamine?” Nav whisper-yelled.
“Bhai… I think I killed someone. Main kya karu?” the voice replied.
“Shubh, saale… wait-wait,” Nav said, taking a breath and rubbing his temple.
“Take a breath first. Tell me clearly. You think you killed someone, or you actually killed someone?”
“I think I killed someone,” Shubh replied.
“Is he alive?” nav asked
” don’t know.” he replied
“Listen, tension mat le. Raven tere paas pahunch raha hoga. Share your location with me. He’ll handle it,” Nav said, trying to calm him down.
“Did you keep a tab on me?” Shubh asked.
“Tujhe kya lagta hai, main tujhe yun hi anjaan desh bina kisi protection ke bhej deta? Bilkul bhi nahi. Aur beta sun.”
He took a two second pause before continuing
“I know everything, Shubh. ”
” Abhi kuch bolna nahi raha hu, iska matlb yeh nahi hai ki, mai anjaan hu, aur iska matlb yeh to bilkul bhi nahi hai ki, mai is chiz ko badhava de rha hu, Be in your limits. Don’t do something foolish which you’ll regret later.”
“Aur sun, act normal. Kuch nahi hua hai. Tera bhai sab sambhal lega.”
Nav ended the call.
Just then Vani walked out.
Her eyes were red.
Nav immediately walked toward her.
“Kya hua, betu why Are you crying?” he asked, cupping her cheeks.
“Doctor ne kuch kaha?” he asked, starting to go inside.
But Vani held his hand.
Vani’s fingers tightened around his hand for a second before she smiled.
“The test came back positive. I am indeed pregnant… so I was just happy,” she said.
“Pakka?” he asked skeptically.
“Haan baba,” she smiled.
Nav pulled her into a tight hug.
“Congratulations, love.”
“Congratulations, patidev,” she replied, resting her head on his chest.
✧
When they reached home, Jasmeet came hurrying toward them, excitement written all over her face.
“Kya hua? Kya bola doctor ne?” she asked eagerly.
Nav glanced at Vani before answering. A smile slowly spread across his face.
“Zyada nahi… bas itna ki aap dadi banne wali ho.”
For a moment Jasmeet froze.
Then her eyes widened in joy.
“Sach?”
She immediately pulled Vani into a tight hug.
“Meri bacchi… many congratulations to both of you!”
“Thank you, Maa,” Nav and Vani said together.
Jasmeet held Vani’s face lovingly.
“Main meri beti aur mere pota ya poti ke liye kaffi saari cheezein laayi hoon. Aao, dikhaati hoon.”
Vani forced a small smile.
“Maa… woh… main zara thak gayi hoon. Thoda rest kar lu? Baad mein dekh lungi.”
Jasmeet paused, glancing at Nav.
“Haan beta, zaroor. Jaake rest kar lo.”
Vani nodded quickly and walked toward her room.
Almost too quickly.
Jasmeet frowned slightly.
“Kuch kahaa hai tune usse?” she asked Nav, holding his arm.
“Nahi Maa… shayad thak gayi hogi.”
“Haan… shayad,” Jasmeet murmured.
But her eyes followed Vani until she disappeared inside the room.
Inside the room.
The moment the door closed behind her, Vani’s strength collapsed.
She slid down beside the door, sitting on the cold floor.
Her hands trembling.
Tears began falling.
One after another.
Soon she was crying uncontrollably.
“Mere sath hi kyun… Bhagwan ji…?”
A sobb break free
” esa kar diya tha mene?? Mai hi kyu?”
“Aap mere sath esa kyu karte ho?…”
Her sobs filled the silent room.
Outside
The whole house was celebrating the arrival of a new life.
But Inside, Vani felt like her world had just collapsed.
Vani pressed the back of her head against the door.
Her breathing was uneven.
Tears kept slipping down her cheeks.
Nav’s voice echoed faintly in her mind
“Congratulations, love.”
” mujhe to choti vani hi chihe.”
” chota nav hua to shaitan hoga.”
” congratulations patidev.”
Her chest tightened.
Outside.
Nav sat at the sofa arm rest, talking to a servant..
” sun sun.. calm the press control, abhi vani or bache jis kamre mai rahenge woh saaf hona chihe. Haan ja…”
” ruk ruk… Machardani or coil saab leke aa..haan ja .”
” nahi nahi ruk ruk woh mai kr lunga… We need air fresheners… Woh leke ane padege… Nahi nahi … Agar alergy ho hai to… Agar baatti…
Par us smoke se alergy ho gai to… Woh mai dekh lunga .. tu ja ..”
” are ruk ruk…. We need nutrition foods.. woh sabka stock chihe… Tu leke aa..”
” nahi ruk ja.. tujhe uski pasand ka nahi pta woh mai le aunga… We need soft toys… Meri badi bachi aur choti bachi ke liye… Tu woh le aaa “
” nahi nahi ruk.. tu galt le aya to .. meri jaan le legi woh… Tu koch maat kr.. yeh bhi mai le aunga “
The servant walk away puzzled.
” sare kam to mai kar raha hu… Inko rakha kyu hai mene??” nav said to himself
” tu koch karne to de ni rhaa… Khud hi bol raha hai…” randeep said while sitting on the couch
” yeh nikamme hai… They don’t know how to do things.” Nav replied
” jese tujhe bada pta hai? Mujhse seekh mai btata hu.-” randeep was about to speak when jasmeet came
” haan hann nav.. mai bhi to sunu inka maha budh gyan.. btao.. kya pta hai apko… ” jasmeet said folding her amrs to her chest
” dekho…bache ke samne meri bezti maat kiya kro miss meet” Randeep said reluctantly
” achaaa? Jese aap bhul gye, when i was pregnant, to nav se bhi bura haal tha apka…bilkul bache ban gye the … Aur papa se dant bhi khate the…. ”
Nav chuckled,
” tu nikal yahan se abhi.” randeep said in annoyance, shooing nav away.
” achaa ji… Apne pai baat ai to mujhe bhaga rhe ho… Mai to meri biwi ke pass ja rhaa hu… Mujhe koi uske ilava pyaar hi ni krta.”
✧
Inside
Her chest tightened
She shut her eyes tight, but still tears escaped through her eyes involuntarily.
And suddenly the doctor’s room appeared again in her memory.
Flashback
The moment Nav stepped outside to take the call, the room fell silent.
Vani turned toward the doctor.
Dr. Radhika was still staring at the report.
But the smile she had earlier was gone.
Instead, her brows were drawn together in concern.
“Doctor…?” Vani asked quietly.
Dr. Radhika looked up.
“Vani… there’s something we need to talk about.”
Her tone was gentle.
Too gentle.
Vani’s heart skipped.
“Baby theek hai na?” she asked quickly.
The doctor inhaled slowly.
“The baby is there. The pregnancy test is positive.”
For a moment relief washed over Vani.
But it lasted only a second.
“However,” the doctor continued carefully, “there are complications.”
Vani’s fingers tightened around the edge of the chair.
” complications? K-kya matlab?”
Dr. Radhika slid the reports across the table.
“Your condition makes this pregnancy extremely risky.”
” risky? How? ” Vani whispered.
The doctor hesitated.
Then spoke plainly.
“If the pregnancy continues… there is a strong chance we may not be able to save both of you.”
The words hit like a physical blow.
Vani blinked.
“I… I don’t understand.”
Dr. Radhika leaned forward.
“In simple terms, Vani… your body is weak, if you carrie this baby further your body may not survive the pregnancy.”
The room suddenly felt chilled
“So the safest option is to terminate the pregnancy early.”
Silence filled the room.
Vani stared at the reports.
Her hands slowly moved to her stomach.
Almost unconsciously.
“Terminate…?” she repeated faintly.
The doctor nodded.
“It is the safest medical decision. “
Tears gathered in Vani’s eyes.
“But… the baby…”
Dr. Radhika’s voice softened.
“I know this is difficult. But we have to prioritize your life. There is also a harsh truth , which i have to tell you, there is a chance you will not be a mother again, biologically. “
Vani shook her head slowly.
“No.”
The doctor frowned slightly.
“Vani-“
“No,” she repeated, firmer this time.
Her hand pressed protectively over her stomach.
“I won’t do it.”
“Vani, listen to me-“
” I want to be a mother. Nav .. he was so happy.. i am gonna be a mother.”
Dr. Radhika stared at her.
“And if something happens to the you?” the doctor asked gently.
Vani’s voice broke.
“he..he will still have our baby. If i didn’t keep this baby, i won’t be a mother again.”
” vani.. listen to me, medical is so advanced these days, we can find a cure.”
” so do you have a cure now?”
The doctor fell silent.
Tears finally rolled down Vani’s face.
“Please don’t tell Nav,” she whispered.
Dr. Radhika looked shocked.
“That’s not something I can hide from your husband.”
Her voice trembled.
“And I… I can’t lose this child. There is still a chance I’ll deliver safely right?. “
” yes. But it is very slim.”
” i am fine with it, i am fine until there is even a slightest chance.”
The doctor studied her for a long moment.
“You understand the risk you’re taking?”
Vani nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“And you still want to continue the pregnancy?”
Her hand tightened over her stomach.
“Yes.”
Dr. Radhika sighed deeply.
“Then we will monitor the pregnancy very closely.”
“But Vani…”
Her voice turned serious.
“You must be prepared for the possibility that we may have to make a very difficult decision later.”
Present
Vani opened her eyes.
Her tears fell harder now.
Her hand moved to her stomach again.
” He gave me so much happiness, and Can’t i give him even one?”
“Main kya karu, Bhagwan ji…”
✧
He stepped into the room and looked around.
His brows furrowed slightly.
For a moment, uneasiness stirred inside him.
Then he heard the shower running in the bathroom.
His shoulders relaxed.
Nav released a breath he hadn’t realized he had been holding.
He sat on the bed and unlocked his phone.
A small smile appeared on his face as he began downloading pictures of babies.
Tiny hands. Tiny socks. Small smiling faces.
He planned to print them and decorate the room.
Their room.
Vani stepped out of the bathroom.
Her hair was still damp.
She saw him and paused for a second.
Just one second.
Then she walked toward him and sat beside him.
Nav looked up and smiled warmly.
He placed his phone aside.
“Theek ho?” he asked.
“Haan… mujhe kya hona hai?”
“Nav… yeh dekho,” she said, picking up a few books.
“I got some books about babies. Let’s read them.”
Nav chuckled softly and pulled her into his arms.
“Nahi yaar… books nahi padhni abhi.”
He kissed her neck lightly.
“Abhi bahut time hai.”
Vani swallowed.
“Nav… kal ka kya pata… kya hoga.”
“Let’s learn about kids… so you don’t have to suffer.”
Nav frowned slightly.
“Suffer kya suffer? Bache hain, rakshas thodi.”
“We’ll learn slowly. Abhi time hai.”
Then he leaned closer and whispered playfully,
“Ek kaam karo… utna time mere saath spend kar lo.”
Vani’s lips trembled slightly.
“I too want to spend so much time with you.”
Her voice was soft.
Barely holding herself together.
✧
The next morning.
Nav and Randeep were sitting in the living room, a notebook open between them as they argued over baby names.
“Tu kya chahta hai? Ladki ya ladka?” Randeep asked.
“Mujhe to ladki hi chahiye,” Nav replied instantly. “Woh pyaari hoti hai.”
Randeep chuckled.
“Chahiye to mujhe bhi ladki hi thi… par tu aa gaya. Phir Shubh. Par finally mujhe beti mil hi gayi Vani ke roop mein.”
Nav smiled at that.
“Abhi ek aur beti bhi aayegi,” he said casually, making his father remember that Shubh was still unmarried.
Just then Vani came downstairs.
She walked straight toward them.
“Nav… let’s read the books,” she said quietly.
Nav sighed dramatically.
“Yaar tumhari sui wahi kyun atak gayi hai? Abhi name decide karne do. Books raat mein padhte hain.”
For a moment Vani just looked at him.
Then she nodded.
“Theek hai… raat ko padhte hain.”
She turned and quietly walked away.
After she left, Randeep glanced at Nav.
“Padh le jaa kar. Woh bhi zaruri hai.”
Nav groaned.
“Dad…”
But he stood up anyway.
“Theek hai… jaa raha hoon.”
He walked toward the stairs reluctantly.
“Madam ji?” he called as he entered the room.
No answer.
“Kamaal hai… kahaan gayi?” he muttered, looking around.
The room was quiet.
Just then his phone rang.
He picked it up.
“Yes, Mr. Sharma?”
“Haan, woh blue file mere paas hi thi… wait, let me check.”
Still holding the phone to his ear, he began searching the table.
“Kahan gayi yaar… yahin toh rakhi thi,” he murmured while opening the drawers.
He checked the cupboard next.
Files shifted. Papers moved.
Instead of finding the file, he only managed to create a mess.
“Had ho gayi,” he sighed in frustration.
As he was about to close the cupboard door, something slipped and fell.
Vani’s purse.
He bent down to pick it up.
While placing it back on the shelf, his eyes landed on something inside.
A file.
He frowned slightly and pulled it out.
“Madam ji… bhi na.” he murmured under his breath, shaking his head.
“Yes, Mr. Sharma, I have got the file. I’ll tell you the estimation… wait.”
But as soon as he opened the file-
His heart dropped.
The words on the paper blurred for a moment.
He blinked.
Then read again.
It wasn’t an office document.
It was a medical report.
Vani’s medical report.
Test results.
Doctor notes.
And the conclusion.
His fingers tightened around the paper as his eyes moved to the final lines.
Condition of mother during pregnancy is dangerous due to severe stress developing in the mother’s body along with signs of internal bleeding. Continuing the pregnancy may pose serious risk to the mother’s life.
For a moment
He didn’t breathe.
The phone slipped from his hand and fell to the floor with a dull thud.
But he didn’t notice.
His feet stumbled backward.
He sat down on the edge of the bed without realizing it.
“Harmful to mother’s life…”
The words echoed in his head.
Again.
And again.
Suddenly everything started making sense.
Her crying.
Her silent breakdowns.
Her sudden insistence on reading baby books again and again.
His chest tightened painfully.
“Vani… tum aisa nahi kar sakti…”
His voice cracked.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Jaise meri zindagi par tumhara haq hai… waise hi tumhari zindagi sirf tumhari nahi hai.”
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“Tumnne itna bada faisla akeli kaise le liya?”
He pressed his hand against his forehead.
“Bas isliye… ki main khush reh sakun?”
More tears fell now.
“Tumhare bina…” his voice broke.
“…kaise jeeyunga main, Vani?”
He shook his head slowly.
“No… main tumhein yeh faisla akeli lene nahi dunga.”
His voice hardened.
” Tum kyu nahi samajhti ki meri khushi tumahre sath mai hai. “
A lump formed in his throat.
” aur yeh sath mai kisi bhi halat mein nahi chhodunga . “
At noon,
Vani came downstairs.
“Ma… Papa?”
They looked at her.
“Haan, bache?”
“Nav kahan hai?”
“Yahin kahin hoga, bache,” Randeep replied calmly.
“Maine call bhi ki… but he is not picking up. He never does that,” Vani said, her heartbeat quickening as a strange fear crept into her chest.
“Shayad office mein ho… meeting mein,” Jasmeet said.
Vani nodded, though she wasn’t convinced.
Her mind was restless.
“Nav ko kahin kuch pata to nahi chal gaya…?” she murmured to herself.
At the Doctor’s Cabin
“Lekin… aap aisa kaise keh sakti hain? Why didn’t you tell me?” Nav asked, standing in front of the doctor.
“Your wife declined telling you, Mr Brar,” the doctor replied calmly.
“Nahi… nahi. She can’t take this decision on her own,” Nav said, shaking his head.
“We’ll terminate the pregnancy. Bacha baad mein ho jayega.”
The doctor sighed softly.
“Mr Brar… the matter isn’t as simple as it seems.”
Nav looked at her sharply.
“She may not be able to conceive again.”
The words landed heavily.
Nav stood stunned.
A tear escaped his eye before he could stop it.
After a moment he spoke quietly,
“It’s okay.”
“I just want my wife safe.”
“We’ll terminate the pregnancy.”
At Home
Jasmeet was showing Vani Nav’s childhood pictures.
Both of them were sitting together, laughing softly as nostalgia filled the room.
Suddenly-
They heard noise downstairs.
Both of them glanced at each other.
And quickly went down.
Downstairs
“Yeh saare toys le jao… aur store room mein rakh do,” Nav instructed the servant without even looking up.
“Haan… aur yeh kapde bhi,” he added coldly.
Vani froze.
Her heart dropped.
She called him once.
“Nav…”
He didn’t respond.
She called again.
“Nav!”
Still nothing.
Finally she grabbed his arm and pulled him slightly toward her.
“What the hell are you doing?” she demanded.
“Why are you keeping the toys in the store room? Kuch dinon mein bache aa jayenge and you-what’s wrong with you?”
Nav slowly pulled his arm away.
He didn’t look at her immediately.
Instead, he handed another box to the servant.
“Yeh bhi rakh do.”
“Nav!” she snapped.
This time he turned.
His face was calm.
But his eyes were burning.
The servants exchanged uneasy glances before quietly leaving the room.
Silence filled the space.
Vani stepped closer.
“What is wrong with you?”
Nav looked at her for a long moment.
Then he asked quietly
“Kis keemat par, Vani?”
She frowned.
“What?”
His jaw tightened.
“Kis keemat par aayenge woh bache?”
His voice cracked slightly.
But his gaze never left hers.
“Huh? Bolo vani, kis.keemat. Par.? “
For the first time since she had known him
Nav looked terrified.
✧
“Kya lagta hai tumhe?” Nav said quietly.
“I don’t know kya keemat lagai hai tumne un bachon ki…”
Vani froze.
She slowly turned her face away, unable to meet his eyes.
Nav’s voice remained calm.
But every word carried pain.
“What do you think?” he said.
“Main andha hoon? Mujhe pata nahi chalega?”
His jaw tightened.
“You want to die that badly?”
Vani looked at him.
“Why?” he asked again.
“Kyun? Meri khushi ke liye?”
His voice cracked slightly.
“Tumhein waqai lagta hai… tumhare bina main khush reh paunga?”
He took a step closer.
“Un bachon ki awaaz tak main sun paunga?”
He shook his head slowly.
“Ek baat samajh lo…”
His voice dropped lower.
“Jab tak main zinda hoon, tum jo chahti ho na…”
“…main kisi bhi haal mein hone nahi dunga.”
The room had gone silent.
“Tu aakhir batayegi hua kya hai?” Randeep asked from behind them.
Nav didn’t look at him.
His eyes remained fixed on Vani.
“Tum bataogi… ya main bataun?” he asked quietly.
Vani still didn’t look at him.
Nav’s expression hardened.
“Himmat hai itna bada faisla lene ki…”
“Batane ki nahi hai?”
Finally he turned toward his father.
“The truth is…”
“Vani ki pregnancy mein complications hain.”
His voice slowed.
“Vani ki jaan bhi ja sakti hai.”
The words landed heavily in the room.
“And if we abort it… she may never become a mother.”
“But I want to-!” Vani tried to speak.
“Bilkul nahi.”
Nav snapped.
His voice rose for the first time.
“Mera faisla bhi count karta hai.”
“Why the hell didn’t you ask me?”
He ran a hand through his hair.
“Aur mere rehte, Vani…”
“…tum yeh bewakoofana kadam nahi uthao gi.”
“Hargiz nahi.”
Vani’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry, Nav,” she said weakly.
“But I will not terminate this pregnancy.”
“There is still a chance… we both will survive.”
“I will not think negatively.”
Before anyone could stop her, she turned and ran upstairs.
Upstairs
She rushed into their room and locked the door.
Nav followed immediately.
“Vani!”
He banged on the door.
“Open the goddamn door!”
Inside, her sobs echoed through the room.
“Tum kyu nahi samajhti…”
His voice broke.
“Main adhura hoon tumhare bina.”
“Vani!”
“Answer me, goddamit!”
Her sobs slowly faded.
“Vani…?”
Panic crept into his voice.
“Vani!”
He hit the door harder.
“VANI!”
When there was still no response,
He stepped back.
And kicked the door.
The lock broke open.
The door crashed open.
“VANI!!”
Nav stepped inside
And froze.
For a second his brain refused to understand what he was looking at.
Vani was lying on the floor.
Her body still.
A thin line of blood trailed from the corner of her mouth.
“No…”
The word escaped his lips as a whisper.
He rushed toward her and dropped to his knees.
“Vani…?”
His hands trembled as he lifted her head carefully.
“Vani, wake up.”
No response.
His heart started pounding violently.
“Vani!”
He gently shook her shoulder.
Still nothing.
Panic shot through his chest.
“VANI!”
His voice cracked.
His shout echoed through the house.
He pressed his hand against her cheek.
“Vani… open your eyes.”
His voice broke.

Hospital
Vani lay on a stretcher as doctors rushed around her.
Machines beeped rapidly.
Her condition was worsening.
Doctor Radhika looked at Nav.
“Her condition is critical.”
“We may have to terminate the pregnancy before things get worse.”
The words hit him like a blow.
Nav closed his eyes for a moment.
Then spoke quietly-
“Doctor… make the preparations.”
“We’ll terminate the pregnancy.”
But before the words fully settled
A weak hand grabbed his sleeve.
Vani.
Her grip was fragile.
Barely there.
Nav looked down at her.
She slowly shook her head.
A silent plea.
Nav turned his face away.
Before the tear in his eye could fall.
