Chapter 11

Miley woke to the sound of movement downstairs.

Soft footsteps. A cupboard opening. The faint clink of a spoon against ceramic.

She didn’t open her eyes right away.

The sound felt expected-like something that had already reached her before she was fully awake. When she finally looked at the clock, the time didn’t surprise her.

She got up slowly.

The floor was cold. She noted it absently, like she always did, and moved toward the wardrobe. A skirt. A sweater. The choice came without hesitation, her hands already reaching before her thoughts caught up.

She paused at the mirror only briefly today.

Not to check. Just to look.

Downstairs, breakfast waited exactly as it should have.

Her mother stood at the counter. Her father sat at the table. The air smelled warm and familiar.

“Morning,” her mother said.

“Morning,” Miley replied.

They spoke quietly-about schedules, about nothing important. Miley ate without rushing, listening more than talking. When she finished her tea, she knew she had just enough time to leave without being late.

She didn’t remember checking the time.

Outside, the air was cold enough to bite. She adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked, stepping around the narrow patch of pavement without thinking.

She noticed the same things as yesterday.

The bend in the road.

The leaves near the fence.

The way the sky seemed too low.

Blackwood High stood ahead, solid and unmoving.

Inside, the noise washed over her-and this time, it didn’t overwhelm her at all. She slipped through the crowd easily, already knowing when to slow down, when to move aside

“Miley!”

Anya waved her over, just like always.

“You’re getting good at this,” Anya said as they walked. “I still get lost half the time.”

Miley smiled. “You get loud instead. It balances out.”

Anya laughed. “Fair.”

Class began the way it always did.

Miley opened her notebook before the teacher asked them to. Her pen rested lightly between her fingers, ready. When the lesson started, she followed along without effort-writing notes, listening, understanding.

At one point, the teacher asked a question.

Miley answered before realizing she’d raised her hand.

The teacher nodded and moved on.

Her stomach tightened-not with fear, but with something close to curiosity.

Felix sat a few rows ahead today.

She noticed him the moment she entered the room. Not because she was searching-just because she knew.

He glanced back once and smiled.

“Hey,” he said later, as they left class at the same time.

“Hey.”

“You always this prepared,” he said, gesturing at her notebook, “or am I just noticing now?”

She shrugged. “Depends on the day.”

He laughed softly. “Guess today’s a good one, then.”

They walked together for a bit, talking about small things. Classes. Teachers. How time moved strangely in this place.

“It’s like the days blur together here,” Felix said. “You ever feel that?”

Miley hesitated-just for a breath.

“Yeah,” she said. “Sometimes.”

At lunch, Anya talked through the entire meal again. Complaints. Stories. Half-finished sentences that looped back on themselves. Miley listened, responding easily, already knowing when Anya would pause for breath.

The afternoon passed smoothly.

Too smoothly.

By the time the final bell rang, Miley was already packing her bag. She didn’t feel relieved.

She felt… ready.

The walk home was quiet. Clouds pressed low against the sky, darker than before.

The house felt still when she stepped inside.

Dinner went by without incident.

Conversation light. Predictable.

Later, in her room, Miley lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling

The day replayed itself-not like a memory, but like something she’d practiced.

She sat up suddenly.

Her eyes drifted to her desk.

To the calendar hanging above it.

She didn’t move toward it.

Not yet.

Tomorrow’s date sat there plainly, written in ink.

October 12

She looked away before she could think about it too much.

It didn’t feel important.

She turned off the light and lay back down, telling herself she was overthinking things.
