Chapter 35
Miley woke before the first light of morning, her chest tight, heart hammering like a drum she couldn’t stop.
The events of the last days circled her mind, but there was only one thought that wouldn’t leave her alone:
the spider room.
The forbidden door.
Her mother’s warning echoed faintly, like a whisper from the past:
“Don’t open that room, Miley… spiders…”
She didn’t know if it was the spiders or the fear of the unknown that had kept her away.
But tonight, curiosity and dread twisted into a single, undeniable pull.
She had to see
She stepped softly into the hallway.
The floorboards creaked under her weight, louder than they should, as if the house itself was awake and watching.
Shadows clung to the corners, moving just enough to make her stomach twist.
And then… a flicker in the mirror.
Her great-grandfather.
Not walking, not moving, just reflected, pointing subtly toward the hallway.
His eyes were serious, almost insistent.
She knew, somehow, that he wanted her to go.
That he wanted her to see something crucial, something the house was holding back.
Miley’s hands trembled. Her fingers brushed the cold wood of the door, and it didn’t budge.
Locked.
The familiar resistance made her flinch. But the mirror flickered again, and she noticed a hint-a shadow moving toward an old cabinet near the wall.
Her grandfather’s silent gesture guided her.
She followed it cautiously, heart racing. Dust danced in the air as she reached the cabinet, pulling open its creaking doors.
Inside, hidden beneath layers of old fabric, she found it.
a small, ancient object, worn with age.
A key? A pendant? She couldn’t tell at first, but she felt its weight in her palm, the heaviness of its importance.
Some things hold time in their bones, waiting for the one who dares to touch.
Her pulse quickened. Clutching the object, she ran back toward the door, urgency driving her forward. But then she froze
The door… it was already open.
A chill ran down her spine. The house had allowed it, had prepared her, had judged her readiness.
The darkness beyond seemed deeper than the hallway, thicker, alive.
Shadows whispered, walls seemed to breathe.
The air carried faint echoes of old voices, faint smells of dust and something older, something forgotten.
Miley swallowed hard, her hands shaking, and took a cautious step forward.
The house does not yield to force
It opens only for those it deems ready.
One more step.
Another.
Her foot crossed the threshold.
And then she stopped.
The room was nothing she could have imagined. Darkness, shadows, whispers, a cold air that wrapped around her like fingers.
But it was the weight of the past she felt most. The secrets waiting. The lives intertwined with the house itself.
She breathed in, trembling, and moved slowly.
Miley had stepped inside.
And somewhere in the quiet, alive corners of the room, the house watched.
