Chapter 45

Miley didn’t remember falling asleep.

She didn’t remember waking up either.

She just… found herself standing.

In front of her mirror.

Her reflection stared back at her with that same pale face, the same tired eyes, the same faint redness around her mouth from biting her lips. But something was off.

She leaned closer.

Her expression didn’t look like hers.

Not sad.
Not scared.
Not anything.

Just… blank.

As if her face had forgotten how to feel.
A faint shiver crawled down her spine, but even that felt muted, like a memory of a shiver rather than a real one.
She blinked slowly.

It’s fine, she told herself.

But even the thought sounded flat inside her head.

She changed her clothes without noticing what she picked. Her hands moved on their own – skirt, sweater brushing hair – like she’d done it for years. Except she couldn’t remember doing it yesterday. Or the day before.

Her room felt distant, like she was visiting it for the first time.

She grabbed her diary, flipping it open out of habit.

The words she had written yesterday stared back at her.

But they didn’t feel familiar.

She traced her own handwriting with her finger.

“I wrote this?” she whispered.

Her voice sounded hollow in the morning air.

She tried to remember last night – the fear, the panic, the questions.

For a moment she grasped a fragment of it…

And then it slipped through her fingers like wateer.

Her chest didn’t tighten.

Her stomach didn’t drop.

She didn’t feel the panic she felt yesterday.

She didn’t feel anything.

She closed the diary slowly.

No spark of recognition, no dread, no confusion.

Just a dull sense of routine.

Downstairs, her mother lifted her eyes from her tea.

“Good morning, sweetheart.”

Miley blinked.

Yesterday, that surprised her.

Today, it didn’t stir even a twitch of emotion.

“Morning,” she said flatly.

She sat at the table.

Ate her breakfast.

Chewed.

Swallowed.

Tasted nothing.

She looked around the house again – the familiar corners, the old paintings, the floor that should’ve creaked but didn’t.

Her eyes noticed everything.

Her mind connected nothing.

It was like watching her own home through a screen.

When she stepped outside, the sunlight didn’t warm her.

The wind didn’t chill her.

Her breath didn’t fog even though it was cold.

She walked the road to school.

Same trees.

Same houses.

Same cracks in the pavement.

Everything looked normal.

Nothing felt normal.

People walked past her.

No one looked at her.

Even when someone brushed her shoulder, she didn’t feel the touch.

Just the movement of her body shifting.

She paused on the sidewalk, touching her own arm.

Her skin was warm.

But she didn’t feel it.

A flicker of thought whispered at the back of her mind – something about last night. About the house. About the loop. About danger.

It faded instantly.

She blinked.

Then kept walking.

Her mind was empty.

Her heart was quiet.

Her emotions muted into silence.

She felt like she was fading from herself.

Like someone had dimmed the lights inside her chest.

When she reached school, she stared at the building for a full ten seconds before realizing she’d stopped.

She didn’t remember walking the last street.

She didn’t remember crossing the road.

She didn’t remember thinking anything at all.

Instead, a strange calm settled over her.

As if being empty was easier.

As if feeling nothing was safer.

As if her mind was slowly being erased……..on purpose.

And somewhere, deep in the loop’s grasping hands, something tugged on her soul – soft at first, then firmer, as if checking how tightly it could pull without breaking her.

Miley didn’t notice.

She entered the school.

Her day continued.

And the loop, patient and ancient, kept quietly erasing her from herself.
