Chapter 47
The pieces of the diary still clung to her fingers long after the fire had died.
Ash settled beneath her nails, smudged faintly across her wrists like fading fingerprints.
Miley stared at them, chest rising and falling too fast, but her mind refused to shape a reason for why she was crying.
Why… was she crying?
She wiped her cheeks again, slower this time, confusion dulling the sting of her tears.
The memory of tearing the pages, running downstairs, lighting the match-it flickered in pieces.
Out of order.
Wrong colors.
Wrong sounds. Like remembering a dream instead of a moment.
“What… happened?” she whispered into the empty air.
Her breath trembled
No answer came.
She pressed a palm to her forehead, squeezing her eyes shut, trying to force anything back into place.
Names, flashes, reasons.
But everything blurred, slippery and distant.
A soft pressure pulsed at the base of her skull, as if her memories were being held underwater just out of reach.
Her lip quivered. Another tear carved a warm path down her cheek.
But she didn’t know why.
And that scared her more than anything.
She pushed herself up shakily and walked upstairs, her legs heavy, each step echoing a heartbeat she couldn’t calm.
When she reached her room, she lay on the bed without changing her clothes.
She waited for sleep.
It didn’t come.
Minutes stretched.
Then an hour.
Then another.
The darkness outside her window didn’t move.
Her thoughts spun in circles-slow, empty loops with no edges.
She stared at the ceiling as the night refused to end.
__________
Morning came the same way dreams ended-abrupt, thin, without warning.
Miley blinked up at the pale light filtering through her curtains.
Her body felt stiff, as if she’d been awake all night even though she couldn’t remember when she finally drifted off.
Her eyes were swollen, but she didn’t feel sad anymore.
Just tired.
Drained.
Hollow.
She got ready for school automatically, like her limbs remembered the steps even if her mind didn’t.
Wearing her shoes, grabbing her bag, brushing her hair-the motions were smooth and practiced, as if the loop had carved them into her.
Her parents greeted her downstairs.
Her mother smiled.
Her father adjusted his glasses.
And she didn’t feel anything.
Not worry.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Not even that strange, distant dread that usually lingered in her stomach.
Everything felt… neutral.
As if her emotions had been washed out with cold water.
She walked to school along the same road, past the same trees, under the same pale sky.
Nothing stood out
Nothing felt suspicious.
Nothing hurt Nothing healed.
Just normal.
Uncomfortably normal.
A type of normal that didn’t belong to her anymore.
____________
But night did.
Night pressed close, heavy and quiet, like something sitting beside her waiting for her to turn and notice it.
Miley sat on the floor of her bedroom, knees drawn up again, staring at the blank space on her desk where the diary used to be.
Her mind drifted in slow spirals, looping thoughts crashing into each other without meaning.
Her fingers tapped against her knee, restless.
Then the questions began.
Softly at first.
Barely whispers.
“Do I really… have to break this loop?”
Her voice sounded thin in the still room.
“Will I even be able to?”
No movement.
No answers.
Just her own breath, uneven and quiet.
She pressed her palm to her chest.
Her heartbeat felt slow.
Detached.
Like it belonged to someone else
“What if I’m not supposed to fix anything?”
she murmured, eyes narrowing slightly at the empty air.
“What if this is supposed to happen?”
Her throat tightened.
“Why am I the only one trying?”
Her voice cracked.
“Why me?”
A shaky exhale left her lips as the questions multiplied, pressing against her mind like hands pushing from the inside.
“Should I just… stop? Let it happen? Let it stay? Let it be?”
Her breaths grew shorter.
“What if the loop doesn’t need to break?”
She swallowed
“What if I don’t want to break it anymore?”
The room hummed faintly.
Her eyes drifted unfocused toward the corner of her mirror-where shadows clung a little too deeply.
But she didn’t flinch this time.
Didn’t tremble.
Didn’t panic
She simply stared.
Empty
Tired.
Disconnected.
A small thought whispered through her mind, light and soft as dust:
Maybe this is easier.
Her eyes burned, but tears didn’t fall
The loop wasn’t just trapping her.
It was changing her.
Wearing her down softly, quietly, gently.
Replacing emotion with numbness.
Replacing fear with questions she shouldn’t be asking.
Her voice broke into the silence one last time, barely audible:
“What… am I becoming?”
The house didn’t answer.
But it listened.
And it approved of her silence.
