Chapter 55

The next few days became quieter

That was what frightened Miley most

Not the sounds
Not the scratches

Not even the room beneath the house.

The silence.

The house no longer reacted every time she noticed something strange.

Instead, it watched.

Patiently.

Like it had realized she was watching back.

Miley sat at the kitchen table one morning, stirring cold tea she no longer planned to drink.

Across from her, her father turned another page of the newspaper.

The same page.

Miley noticed immediately.

But this time-

she kept stirring her tea.

Slow circles.

Steady breathing.

Pretend.

That thought came naturally now.

Not panic.

Not denial.

Strategy.

The newspaper crackled softly again.

Her father’s eyes moved across words he had already read.

Then, after several long seconds, he blinked faintly and continued normally.

Like nothing had happened.

Miley lowered her gaze before he could notice her staring.

The house creaked softly overhead.

Testing.

She ignored it.

Something shifted in the silence afterward.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The pressure in the air loosened slightly.

And Miley understood.

It noticed reactions.

Not fear.

Awareness.

The realization stayed with her the entire day.

At school, she started writing things down constantly.

Not dramatic things.

Small things.

Important things.

The clock in chemistry skipping from 10:14 to 10:17.

A teacher forgetting the middle of a sentence.

A hallway feeling longer after lunch than before.

Most people would dismiss those moments immediately.

That was the problem.

The house survived because everyone accepted easy explanations.

Miley opened her notebook beneath the desk quietly.

Not her diary.

A different notebook.

Safer to carry around.

Near the bottom of the page, she wrote carefully:

Observe first. React later.

Then beneath it:

The house listens when noticed.

She stared at the sentence for a second too long.

A strange chill moved through her stomach.

Because it sounded less like a theory now-

and more like experience.

Miley.”

She looked up immediately.

Her history teacher frowned faintly from the front of the room.

“Were you listening?”

A few students laughed softly.

Normally Miley would have apologized automatically.

Today she simply nodded once.

Yes.”

The teacher hesitated.

Almost confused by the calm answer.

Then continued teaching.

Miley looked back down at the notebook slowly.

Her reflection stared faintly back at her through the classroom window beside her desk.

For half a second-

it looked tired enough to belong to someone older.

Then it was normal again.

Miley closed the notebook immediately.

Not fear.

Not yet.

But her hands felt colder afterward.

That evening, rain fell softly over Blackwood.

Miley stood near her bedroom window watching water slide slowly down the glass.

The town looked faded tonight.

Not abandoned.

Just distant.

As though the world outside Blackwood belonged somewhere else entirely.

Behind her, the house groaned softly.

Miley didn’t turn around.

That was becoming easier too.

A few days ago, every sound dragged her attention toward it instantly.

Now she understood something important:

The house wanted acknowledgment.

Like repetition itself needed participation.

Her eyes drifted toward the notebook resting on her desk.

Then toward the bedroom door.

Closed.

Quiet.

Listening.

Miley stared at it for a long moment.

Then deliberately looked away first.

The stretching sound inside the walls stopped.

A slow breath left her lungs.

Not victory.

Just confirmation.

The house noticed when she noticed it.

Which meant pretending mattered.

The thought settled heavily into her chest.

Because pretending not to notice something long enough…

could start becoming real.

And wasn’t that exactly what had happened to everyone else?

Her mother.

Her father.

Maybe even the entire town.

Little by little.

Moment by moment.

Comfort replacing awareness.

Until wrong things simply became normal

The house creaked again.

Softer this time.

Almost thoughtful.

Miley walked slowly to her desk and opened the diary.

For several seconds, she only stared at the page.

Then she wrote :

It notices when I notice it.

A pause.

The walls remained silent.

Miley tightened her grip slightly around the pen.

Then added one final line beneath it.

So I’ll pretend I don’t.

The light above her flickered once.

And somewhere deep inside the house- something went very still.
