Chapter 59

Miley hid the letter beneath a loose floorboard in her room.

Not because she thought the house would steal it.

Because she wasn’t sure anymore what the house was capable of changing.

The thought followed her all evening.

Quietly.

Constantly.

She waited until after dinner to take it back out again.

The house remained calm tonight.

Too calm.

Her parents sat downstairs watching television in the dim living room while pale blue light flickered softly across their faces. Neither of them spoke much. Occasionally her mother nodded faintly at something on-screen a few seconds too late, like her reactions were arriving after the moment had already passed.

Her father stared without blinking for so long at one point that Miley almost said something.

Then he suddenly adjusted his posture and continued watching normally.

Like nothing had happened.

Like it never happened.

The house creaked softly around them.

Patient.

Miley returned upstairs without speaking.

Her room felt colder tonight.

Or maybe sharper.

She locked the door out of habit now and knelt beside the loose floorboard near her bed.

The letter remained exactly where she left it.

Relief moved through her chest briefly.

Then uncertainty followed immediately after.

Because she no longer trusted relief either.

Miley unfolded the paper carefully beside her diary.

The same shaky handwriting stared back at her beneath the desk lamp glow.

We were supposed to leave three weeks ago.

Her eyes moved lower.

Every time we start packing, something interrupts us.

The words made her stomach tighten again.

Not because they frightened her.

Because they sounded familiar.

Miley opened her diary slowly.

Most of the pages near the beginning looked uneven and crowded with rushed thoughts.

Questions. Observations. Half-memories.

And scattered between them-

sentences she barely remembered writing.

It’s easier when I stop thinking too much.

Her breath slowed.

A strange coldness crept into her chest.

She flipped backward through more pages.

Maybe I’m just tired.

Another page.

I think I’m overreacting again.

Miley stared at the words silently.

They no longer sounded natural to her.

They sounded planted.

Not forced.

Suggested.

Tiny nudges repeated over and over until they became her own thoughts.

The house didn’t need control.

Only exhaustion.

The realization settled heavily into her stomach.

Miley grabbed her pen quickly.

On the next blank page she wrote carefully:

The attic letter was real.

She underlined it twice.

Then stared at the sentence for several seconds.

Nothing happened.

The room remained still.

The house creaked softly somewhere far below.

Miley exhaled slowly.

See? she thought. Maybe I’m finally losing-

A sharp ticking sound interrupted her thoughts.

Her eyes lifted immediately toward the clock beside her bed.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Then-

silence.

The second hand stopped moving.

Miley froze.

The room felt suddenly aware of her again.

Not hostile.

Focused.

Her pulse slowed painfully.

She looked back down toward the diary.

The sentence remained there.

The attic letter was real.

But as Miley stared-

the ink shimmered faintly.

Not visually.

Wrongly.

Like her mind couldn’t fully settle on the words.

Her stomach tightened.

Slowly-

almost gently-

the sentence changed.

The attic letter was old.

Miley stopped breathing.

The pen slipped slightly in her fingers.

“No…”

The word barely came out.

Her pulse began climbing so fast it hurt.

She knew what she had written.

She knew it.

The room stayed completely still around her.

Too still.

Miley’s hand trembled faintly as she stared at the altered sentence.

For one awful moment, she wanted to close the diary and pretend none of this had happened.

Pretend she was tired
Pretend she was imagining things Pretend the house was only a house

The silence pressed against her softly.
Patiently.

Waiting for her to stop noticing.
Miley swallowed hard.

Then tightened her grip on the pen again.

Beneath the altered sentence, she wrote slowly:

I know what you’re doing.

The second she finished writing-

the light above her desk flickered once.

The room fell silent.

Completely silent.

Even the house stopped creaking.

Miley looked up slowly.

And for one impossible second-

the walls of her room felt identical to the room hidden inside the house.

Curved slightly inward.

Breathing softly in the dark.

Watching.

Then the feeling vanished.

The light steadied again.

The room became normal.

Almost.

Miley swallowed slowly and closed the diary.

Her hands trembled faintly now.

Not from panic.

From understanding.

The house had noticed her noticing it.

And somewhere downstairs-

her mother suddenly laughed at something on television

Too loud

Too delayed

Like the sound arrived from very far away
