Chapter 71

Miley did not return to sleep.

Even after leaving the old room.

Even after saying goodnight to her great-grandfather.

Even after climbing the stairs and closing the door behind her.

Sleep never came.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

She sat beside her window.

A blanket wrapped loosely around her shoulders.

The diary rested open in her lap.

Yet she hadn’t written a single word.

The pages remained blank.

Outside, Blackwood slept beneath a pale silver moon.

The streets were empty.

The trees stood motionless.

The town looked exactly as it always had.

Yet Miley couldn’t shake the feeling that something was changing.

Perhaps it was because she finally knew.

Perhaps it was because she had stopped searching.

Perhaps it was because the house knew she understood.

Whatever the reason, the air felt different.

Heavier.

Expectant.

As though the entire town was waiting for something.

Her eyes drifted toward the clock beside her bed.

11:08.

One minutes passed.

11:09.

The second hand moved steadily.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

For a while she simply watched it.

Listening to the familiar rhythm.

The small sound filling the silence of her room.

Then the clock reached 11:10.

And stopped.

Miley frowned.

The second hand remained frozen.

She stared.

Waiting for it to move again.

It didn’t.

A strange chill crept down her spine.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Not physically.

Something else.

Something deeper.

The feeling of standing at the edge of a cliff.

The feeling of knowing something important was about to happen.

Then-

Every sound vanished.

The ticking disappeared.

The wind disappeared.

The distant creaks of the house disappeared.

Silence swallowed everything.

Miley’s breath caught.

Because it wasn’t ordinary silence.

It felt wrong.

Like the world itself had paused.

Slowly she stood.

The blanket slipped from her shoulders and fell onto the floor.

Her pulse quickened.

Somewhere deep inside the house, a floorboard creaked.

The sound echoed unnaturally far.

Then another followed.

And another.

Not footsteps.

Memories.

The realization arrived without explanation.

Miley moved toward the bedroom door.

Her hand hesitated briefly on the handle.

Then she opened it.

The hallway beyond looked normal.

At first.

Moonlight spilled through the windows.

Shadows stretched across the floor.

The familiar photographs lined the walls.

Then she blinked.

And one photograph changed.

For a heartbeat, it wasn’t her family.

It was another.

Older.

Dressed in clothes from decades ago.

Standing in the exact same place.

Smiling at the camera.

Miley froze.

The image vanished immediately.

Her family returned.

The hallway looked normal once more.

Yet her heart refused to slow.

Because she knew what she had seen.

The loop was slipping.

Reality was slipping with it.

Slowly she stepped into the hallway.

The floor creaked beneath her feet.

Halfway down the corridor she glanced toward the staircase.

And stopped.

Someone stood at the bottom.

A woman.
For one impossible second Miley thought it was her mother.

Then the figure shifted.

The hairstyle changed.

The clothes changed.

The posture changed.

And suddenly it wasn’t her mother anymore.

It was her great-grandmother.

Young.

Alive.

Standing beside the stairs exactly where her mother should have been.

The image flickered.

Mother.

Great-grandmother.

Mother.

Great-grandmother.

Then gone.

The staircase stood empty.

A cold shiver raced through Miley.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Past and present were overlapping.

The house was no longer showing memories.

It was forgetting the difference between then and now.

The realization terrified her.

She hurried downstairs.

The kitchen light glowed softly.

Relief flooded her immediately.

Normal.

Everything looked normal.

Then she looked toward the table.

And saw three people sitting there.

Her family.

And not her family.

Different faces.

Different years.

Different generations.

All occupying the same space.

For a heartbeat the room became crowded with ghosts of ordinary lives.

A child laughing.

Someone setting down plates.

Someone reading a newspaper.

Someone arguing over tea.

Life.

Hundreds of tiny fragments of life.

Then everything vanished.

The kitchen stood empty.

Miley grabbed the edge of the counter.

Her breathing suddenly faster.

The house groaned softly around her.

Not angrily.

Not violently.

Like something under strain.

Like something struggling to hold itself together.

Then every clock in the house began ringing.

At once.

The grandfather clock.

The kitchen clock.

The clock upstairs.

The one in the hallway.

Every single one.

The sound echoed through Blackwood.

One note.

Then another.

Then another.

Until the entire house seemed to vibrate with it.

Miley looked toward the nearest clock.

The hands moved.

11:10.

11:11.

And stopped.

The lights flickered.

The walls groaned.

The air itself seemed to ripple.

Then-

A whisper.

Soft.

Barely audible.

“Miley.”

She spun around.

Nobody there.

Another whisper.

Closer.

“Miley.”

Then another.

And another.

And another.

The voices multiplied.

Young voices.

Old voices.

Frightened voices.

Tired voices.

Hopeful voices.

Broken voices.

All speaking the same name.

Her name.

Miley.

From the hallway.

From upstairs.

From inside the walls.

From every direction.

The voices were not calling for help.

They were calling to her.

And standing in the center of the frozen house, surrounded by echoes of lives and memories and forgotten versions of herself-

Miley finally understood.

The loop knew.

It knew she had found the truth.

And for the first time since Blackwood began repeating itself…

It was afraid.
