Chapter 76

Miley woke to sunlight.

Real sunlight.

Warm sunlight.

The kind that slipped through curtains and painted golden patterns across the floor.

For several seconds she simply lay there, staring at the ceiling.

The room felt different.

Not strange.

Not haunted.

Not watched.

Just quiet.

Outside, birds sang somewhere among the trees. Wind brushed softly against the window. Far away, she heard the faint rumble of a passing car.

Normal sounds.

Ordinary sounds.

The sounds of a world moving forward.

A slow breath escaped her.

The house was silent.

Not the heavy silence she had grown used to.

Not the silence that seemed to hide whispers within it.

This silence felt natural.

Comfortable.

Peaceful.

A loud thump echoed from downstairs.

Then another.

Followed by her father’s voice.

“Careful with that one!”

Miley blinked.

For a moment she was confused.

Then she remembered.

They were moving.

The realization settled over her slowly.

Moving.

Leaving.

Leaving Blackwood.

Months ago the idea would have seemed impossible.

Blackwood had felt permanent somehow.

Like the town had wrapped invisible roots around everything that entered it.

Like it would never let anyone leave.

Yet now…

they were simply packing.

The thought almost made her laugh.

By the time she came downstairs, boxes filled nearly every room.

Furniture had already been moved.

Bookshelves stood empty.

Family photographs had been removed from walls.

The house looked larger than she remembered.

Her mother was wrapping dishes in newspaper.

Her father carried another box through the front door.

Both looked busy.

Tired.

Normal.

And somehow that made Miley happier than she expected.

The day passed quickly.

Boxes.

Suitcases.

Clothes.

Books.

Memories packed neatly into cardboard containers.

By afternoon almost everything was gone.

The house echoed now when someone spoke.

Each empty room seemed bigger than before.

As though the walls themselves had moved farther apart.

Eventually the final box was loaded into the car.

“We’ll leave in ten minutes,” her father called.

Miley nodded.

But instead of getting into the car, she remained standing on the porch.

Looking at the house.

A strange feeling tugged at her chest.

One last time.

Without really thinking about it, she turned and stepped back inside.

The front door closed softly behind her.

Silence greeted her.

The empty house felt enormous.

Without furniture filling the rooms, every hallway seemed wider.

Every room seemed deeper.

Every corner seemed strangely unfamiliar.

Sunlight streamed through bare windows.

Dust floated lazily through the air.

Miley wandered slowly through the rooms.

Past the staircase.

Past the dining room.

Past the living room.

The house felt lighter somehow.

As though a weight had finally been lifted from its shoulders.

Her footsteps echoed softly against the wooden floor.

Eventually she found herself walking toward the oldest part of the house.

The far wing.

The place she had spent months exploring.

Fearing.

Searching.

Remembering.

The place where she had found answers.

The place where she had spoken to him.

Her pace slowed.

Something felt wrong.

The hallway seemed shorter.

Miley frowned.

Then continued walking.

A few moments later she stopped.

Her eyes widened.

The room was gone.

Not locked.

Not hidden.

Gone.

The doorway where it should have been no longer existed.

Only a wall stood there.

Miley stared.

“No…”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Slowly she stepped forward.

Her fingers touched the wall.

Solid.

Cold.

Real.

There was no doorway.

No hidden entrance.

No trace of the room where she had watched the past unfold before her eyes.

The room where she had spoken to her great-grandfather.

The room where decades of memories had gathered.

Gone.

A chill ran through her.

Not fear.

Shock.

Confusion.

She moved farther down the hallway.

Toward another room.

The room where she had once heard scratching beyond the walls.

The room that had haunted her nightmares.

It was gone too.

The hallway simply ended.

Nothing remained beyond it.

Miley stood frozen.

Trying to understand.

Trying to remember.

Trying to make sense of what she was seeing.

Slowly she stepped backward.

Then another step.

And another.

Something made her turn around.

She glanced back over her shoulder.

And her breath caught.

The entire wing was gone.

Not hidden.

Not concealed.

Not altered.

Gone.

The hallway now ended much earlier than it should have.

The oldest section of the house no longer existed.

As though it had never been there at all.

As though those rooms had belonged somewhere else entirely.

Somewhere between memory and time.

For several moments Miley simply stared.

The silence around her felt peaceful.

Final.

Then gradually a small smile appeared on her face.

The house wasn’t hiding anything anymore.

There were no secrets left.

No wounds left.

No memories trapped behind walls.

Everything connected to the loop had vanished with it.

Only the house remained.

Just a house.

Just a home.

The way it should have been.

A lump formed in her throat.

For a long moment she looked at the place where an entire chapter of her life had once existed.

Then she whispered:

“Goodbye.”

Nothing answered.

And somehow…

that was how she knew it was over.

A few minutes later, the car pulled away from the house.

Blackwood slowly disappeared behind them.

Trees lined both sides of the road.

Sunlight filtered through the branches.

The world rolled steadily forward.

Miley sat quietly in the back seat.

Watching the town grow smaller through the window.

Watching the place that had changed her disappear into the distance.

Then she noticed a car approaching from the opposite direction.

At first she paid it little attention.

Just another vehicle on the road.

Then something about it caught her eye.

The color.

The shape.

The small dent near the rear door.

Miley sat upright.

Her heartbeat quickened.

No.

The approaching vehicle drew closer.

Closer.

Closer

And suddenly she recognized it.

Their car.

Impossible.

The vehicle continued toward Blackwood.

Toward the road they had already left behind.

Toward the beginning of everything.

Time seemed to slow.

For one impossible moment the two cars drove side by side.

And Miley looked through the window.

Her father sat behind the wheel.

Her mother sat in the passenger seat.

Then she saw herself.

Sitting in the back seat.

Wearing the same clothes from the day they arrived.

The same expression.

The same confusion.

The same girl who had no idea what waited for her in Blackwood.

The same Miley from the beginning.

For a single heartbeat their eyes met.

The younger Miley frowned slightly.

As though she sensed something.

As though she almost recognized the older girl staring back at her.

Then the moment passed.

The cars continued moving.

One toward Blackwood.

One away from it.

Miley twisted around in her seat.

But the road behind them was empty.

No car.

No family.

No echo.

Only sunlight.

Slowly she settled back into her seat.

Maybe it had been a memory.

A final echo.

A fragment finally being released.

Or maybe some mysteries were never meant to be solved.

A small smile touched her lips.

She turned her gaze toward the road ahead.

The future stretched before her.

Unwritten.

Unrepeated.

New.

The evening sun painted the horizon gold.

The wind brushed gently through her hair.

The world continued moving forward.

And for the first time…

Blackwood did not call her back.

For the first time…

Blackwood did not watch.

For the first time…

Blackwood did not remember.

Miley smiled.

Closed her eyes.

And let the road carry her forward

And for the first time…

Blackwood did not recognize her.
