Summary
grew up in a trailer park.
That doesn’t mean as much now as it did in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and it would be years later that I’d hear the term “trailer trash” but that’s what I was. That’s what we all were.
You see, when you’re a young kid at the bottom of the social ladder, it’s surprising how little you notice it, even as it deeply affects you. Everyone always talks about how cruel kids can be to each other, but that wasn’t my experience growing up as a kid from the trailer park. Rather, the experience was one of indifference. Contempt requires effort, anger requires an emotional response. Silence? That requires nothing whatsoever. The absence of caring is not hatred, it’s indifference.
