Chapter 2 – Chap 2

I applied online for the cleaning job, and within two hours I had received a call from someone claiming to be from the company that owns the “church”. We arranged an interview for the morning.

My Sat Nav took me down long and winding streets in the midst of a Greater London suburb. Amongst the sea of houses and corner shops, was a dirty service road leading up to a small unremarkable building. This was not the sort of church building you’d expect, it looked more like a two story block of flats.

I parked up.

TAP TAP TAP

My car window practically quivered. “Are you Kassandra?” A middle aged, tall skinny looking man asked me, a wide smile forming across his face.

We exchanged pleasantries, he introduced himself as Adam, and that he was the man who called me about the job. We went inside, he talked me through what needed cleaning, the hours involved and then he gave me a set of keys.

Me: “so I’ve got the job then? Just like that?”

Adam: “yes sweetheart, to tell you the truth you’re the only one who’s applied in the last month since our last cleaner just up and left!”

Me: “well I’m happy to start whenever! The other cleaner up and left?”

(I was slightly annoyed at being called sweetheart, but I didn’t want to rock the boat just yet)

Adam: “that’s great news Kassie! Yes he left. There’s not much more to tell”

Me: “bu-“

Adam: “now sweetheart, if there’s nothing else to discuss then I’ll leave you to it! If you can give it a quick once over today, and then just come back on the agreed days. That’s a good girl. – oh and the church members don’t like to be disturbed so please try and stay out of their way.”

So that was that. I had a new job, and the means to investigate whatever that strange note was about. A month passed, I cleaned, and I looked around. Do you know what I found? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No one was even around when I was there! I’d wasted a whole month based on some stupid note when I could have been back in the library researching. I turned up one day in late March and told myself after my shift I would ring Adam and resign.

I got on with my work that day. I had an hour left when I’d started scrubbing the women’s toilet bowls. My eyes started watering, and the air fell still. I felt that same sensation at the side of my head as if someone was there, right next to me. I felt that warm breath again, this time tickling my ear. My head snapped round. There was no one there. Not a soul.

I ran out of the toilets and into the main chapel. Crosses and statuettes surrounded the room. Of course I’d seen all of this before, but one cross caught my eye, a small wooden one. It was upside down in a small coved area in the corner of the room. I went towards the cross to place it back upright, and that was when I saw it. A door handle. Directly underneath the cross was a door handle, and a door hidden behind a tapestry. I searched the set of keys given to me by Adam but found nothing that would fit the lock. That’s when I tried the handle. It opened! It had been left unlocked…

Beyond the door were steps leading down into a basement. Down the stairs led into a room which would be better referred to as a temple rather than a basement. Faint lamps lit the room, white marble pillars formed a circle surrounding an altar. Black hooded robes were hung up around the walls. I slowly walked around the “temple”, and made my way to the altar in the middle of the room.

The altar was a 4ft pyramid made from black granite. On the top was a large black stone slab perfectly balanced. I gingerly touched the slab but it didn’t move an inch. Somehow it was fastly secured in place despite the small point at the top of the pyramid it rested on. I felt my way around the slab until my finger pressed down upon a small indent. The inner part of the stone flipped over and what came up was a paper thin laptop.

The laptop was like nothing I’ve seen before. It had no brand logo, no serial number. It was silver, with a small symbol on the middle; it was a black circle, with different shaped squares filling the inside.

I opened the laptop and turned it on. There was no login screen, it booted straight up to the plain black desktop screen. There were multiple folders dotted around the screen. One caught my eye, it read “Omega”. I opened the folder to find just one text document. Inside read the following:

ENTRY 252

The Alpha was a success. Thousands of years of control and order have passed without fail, but this era is coming to an end, and Yahweh is becoming restless. Our radio telescopes watching the void have revealed to us his movements. The meteor error corrupted Alpha Centauri error corrupted dust error corrupted burning and screaming error corrupted torture. We must not fail to provide what he needs. Our numbers may be few now but soon the order of Omega will grow in number exponentially, and a new era will be ushered in. One mention of him and they all fell to their fat greedy knees, there will be no resistance, yet again.

ENTRY 729

The order has grown once more. In the advent of global communication our presence is maintained without the need for physical footholds. If only Lilith was around to see this now. error corrupted library error corrupted he came to visit error corrupted gutted and bled error corrupted we feast. Turn your pretty little head around and let us look at you. Turn around Kassandra.

The air fell still. My skin felt freezing, and shivers ran through my whole body. A sickness swell up from my stomach, reaching to my chest where it felt tight and compressed. I slowly turned my whole body around. The other half of the room was filled with them. Tall, thin figures were draped in jet black hooded robes which trailed around them on the floor. I opened my mouth to speak but then they moved towards me. Not fast, not slow, they just moved. In fact no, they didn’t just move. They glided across the floor, coming right for me.
