Chapter 14
It was the last period, as n teachers was there all were chatting in the class.
eunwoo watched Jungkook working. That’s when eunwoo remembered something; he took a file out of his bag and walked over to Jungkook, who was engrossed in his work. eunwoo sighed and called, “Yah, Jeon Jung—” He stopped, correcting himself, “Yah, Kim Jungkook.” eunwoo’s voice was cold.
Jungkook looked up. “What?” voice was cold asual
“Here’s the document. your dad asked me to give it to you; talk to him to get the details,” eunwoo said and was about to leave, but Jungkook’s voice stopped him.
“Do you still do the work?”
eunwoo turned back, scoffing bitterly. “Of course—a slave has to work for his owner, right?”
“Why did you join again?” Jungkook asked while gritting his teeth.
eunwoo stepped closer to him. “Why do you care, mister? It’s none of your business. Don’t even think about getting closer to me; I haven’t forgotten anything.” With anger on his face, eunwoo stormed away, leaving Jungkook staring at his fading figure.
Jungkook sighed, then looked at the file. He opened it and saw the writing: “Mission: Get information on MANIAC’s head—PARK HYUN KWON.” He sighed, put the file in his bag, grabbed it, and left the class as the university ended.
He walked to his bike, he sat on the bike and rode to a nearby park whick Tae and Jimin had shown him two days before.
Upon arriving, he removed his helmet, sat on a bench, and looked at the orange sky. After a while, he took out his phone and called Hyun Woo.
“Hello, Kook?” Hyun Woo answered.
“Why didn’t you tell me eunwoo rejoined the mafia?” Jungkook asked, his voice icy.
“J-Jungkook, t-that…” Hyun Woo stammered, cut off when Jungkook demanded, “I asked why didn’t you tell me?”
Hyun Woo took a deep breath. “Your dad told us not to, and Hae-in said not to mention it either.”
“Fine, do whatever you want. I’m no one to ask or care about this. But remember this: if anything happens to eunwoo or my noona, I won’t be easy for you and him” Jungkook warned, his tone cold and stern.
“N-nae, Kook,” Hyun Woo replied nervously.
“And I’m telling you again: if Kim does anything to me, I don’t care. But if he harms them, I swear he and everyone around him will pay,” Jungkook said and hung up without giving Hyun Woo a chance to reply.
——-
After that, Jungkook returned to the mansion, where he saw Jin sitting on the couch, lost in thought. Jungkook ignored him and walked toward his room, stopping only when Jin called him. “Kookie,” he said. Jungkook turned around. “Come down after you freshen up,” Jin said with a smile. Jungkook nodded and left.
—
When Jungkook came down, freshened up, he saw Jin in the dining hall, sipping coffee. Jungkook took a seat.
“Oh, Kookie,” Jin said, snapping out of his thoughts.
“Why did you call?” Jungkook asked.
“Umm, I just wanted to inform you to be careful. I’ve strengthened the guards for safety purposes. If you feel like someone is watching you or feel unsafe, call me or Tae immediately.”
Jungkook looked at him with no reaction. “Guards? Why do I need guards?” even thoughh he know the nswer, he asked as he want jin to spit it.
“It’s unsafe, Kook. d-dad’s or my business Rivals may try to harm you,” Jin replied. Jungkook scoffed bitterly, looking away.
“That’s a lie, but okay, I’ll take the lie,” he said coldly, making Jin pause. Before Jin could say more, they heard Mr. Kim’s voice.
“Yes, arrange it for tomorrow. Alright, I’ll hang up,” Mr. Kim was saying on the phone as he entered the dining hall. Jungkook stood up and bowed to Mr. Kim, who didn’t even nod or smile back. Jin gave a slight bow as well. After hanging up, Mr. Kim spoke, his voice calm.
“Sit down.”
Jungkook and Jin sat.
“Where’s Tae?” Mr. Kim asked, drinking a glass of water.
“He’s in the workshop, Dad. He has some work to do there,” Jin replied. Mr. Kim nodded, glancing briefly at Jungkook, who looked down. With a sigh, he turned back to Jin.
“So, Jin, I’m going to Busan for some business. I’ll return friday, just before the celebration,” Mr. Kim said.
Jin nodded. “Yes, Dad… umm, w-what’s the secret you mentioned?” Jin asked hesitantly.
Mr. Kim glared sharply. “Do you have the guts to question me?”
Jin shook his head. “N-no, Dad. I was just asking,” he said.
“You don’t have the right to ask. You’ll know when the time is right,” Mr. Kim said, standing up. “Jungkook, come to my room,” he ordered and left.
Jungkook glanced at Jin, who seemed confused. Sighing, he followed Mr. Kim to his room.
—
In Mr. Kim’s room, Jungkook saw him sitting on the couch, looking a bit angry.
“So, Kim Jungkook, I assume your best friend delivered the file I gave you?” Mr. Kim asked bitterly.
“He’s not my best friend,” Jungkook replied through gritted teeth. “But he delivered the document.”
“I know that. Start working on the mission today. I don’t want your hyungs to know what you’re doing. If you have questions, ask Hyun Woo. eunwoo will also be working with you on this. You can come to the base or set up a place for your research. I want all the information within one month,” Mr. Kim instructed. “Make up an excuse to tell your hyungs,” he added, emphasizing the word “hyungs.”
Jungkook clenched his jaw. “I can’t work with eunwoo.”
“WOah, he said the same thing: ‘I can’t work with Jungkook.’ Soulmates for sure , or should I say enemies?” Mr. Kim said bitterly.
“I said I don’t want to work with him,” Jungkook replied.
“Why? Do you think if you get close, he’ll forgive you?” Mr. Kim taunted.
Jungkook glared at him. “I don’t want any forgiveness from anyone.”
Mr. Kim chuckled. “Even if you did, they wouldn’t forgive you. You know why? Because you killed your hyung. Maybe your mom, too.”
Jungkook’s anger calmed, but he stayed silent, the words hurted him, it reminded him the past.
“Anyway, it doesn’t matter if you want to work with him or not. You two are working together, and that’s final. No more talk about it,” Mr. Kim said sternly. Jungkook sighed, frustrated.
“Why did you hide that they both rejoined the mafia?” Jungkook demanded angrily.
Mr. Kim stood up. “Why should I tell you? Do you actually care about them?” he asked, his voice dark.
Jungkook glared, and Mr. Kim smacked his arm hard, making Jungkook wince. “Drop that attitude, you useless animal,” he said coldly. Jungkook glared again, and Mr. Kim smacked his arm once more.
“I said drop it. I swear you’ll get what you deserve one day, you little brat,” Mr. Kim said, smacking his shoulder harshly a few more times.
Jungkook winced in pain but didn’t throw tantrums.
Tired of the beating, Jungkook harshly jerked Kim’s hand away.
“Just stop this. What do you get by hurting me and others, huh? Do you get happiness seeing me beaten or suffering? Why the fuck are you doing this, you monster? You’re a fucking psycho, why the hell you do this,” Jungkook yelled, his eyes red with anger.
“What? You called me a monster and a psycho, right? Yes, I am a psycho. I love seeing you in pain. You know why? Because you’re just a useless idiot an unlucky shotty person. You know what a real monster looks like?” After saying this, Kim threw a hard punch at Jungkook’s stomach, making him groan in pain.
He clutched his stomach. Kim didn’t stop. He started kicking Jungkook, who curled into a ball on the floor.
“This is me, a heartless monster and a psycho. And guess what? You’re my son, my favorite son, so I can use you however I want,” Kim said, crouching down to Jungkook’s level.
“Just remember, you’re a slave to me. I don’t show any mercy to any of my workers. I’m telling you again, if you mess with me, I’ll show you the real monster. Shut your fucking mouth and just do what I say. You shouldn’t ask any questions to me, my son,” Kim said dominantly.
Jungkook just winced in pain. He flinched when Kim caressed his hair. “Aww, my younger son got beaten today. You must be in pain, right? But that’s what you deserve,” Kim said, standing up and adjusting his clothes.
“You pathetic idiot, just get lost. I don’t want to see your face, and yeah, don’t show your fucking pathetic side to your Hyungs,” he ordered.
Jungkook didn’t reply. He stood up, wincing in pain. He left the room, gritting his teeth. Jin didn’t see jungkook going to his room limping as he already went to his room.
—
In his own room, Jungkook locked the door and lay on his bed, breathing heavily. “What does he even want? He won’t let me live or die. I wish I’d died that day with Mom… these people are truly monsters,” he mumbled, his eyes red with anger and sadness.
“Ahh, ah,” Jungkook winced in pain a drop of tear left from his eyes.
He clutched his stomach, which was aching badly like hell.
He let out a shaky breath. After a while, he stood up, wincing in pain. He took off his shirt.
In the mirror, he saw the ugly scars and bruises on his upper body. His left arm and shoulder were red from Mr. Kim’s smacks. Sighing, he took out the medicine box and applied ointment to his wounds, wincing as he pressed it against the sore areas.
He looked at his stomach, which was slightly red. He took painkiller to subside the pain. He wore a hoodie. After that he laid on bed.
Jungkook stayed in his room for the next few hours, replaying everything that had just happened. His mind was swirling with frustration, anger, and an exhaustion so deep.
The pain from his father’s blows was still fresh, but the ache in his heart hurt more.
He was deep in thought, only coming back to reality when he heard someone knocking on the door. Slowly, he got up, went to the door, and opened it to find Tae standing there.
“Hey Kookie, it’s time for dinner,” Tae said with a smile.
“I don’t have an appetite,” Jungkook said, and he was about to close the door when Tae stopped him.
“Even if you don’t have an appetite, you should eat something. Just a little bit,” Tae insisted.
Jungkook shook his head, about to respond, but he stopped when he heard Kim, who was standing nearby.
“Kookie, come and eat,” Kim said softly.
Jungkook sighed and went downstairs with Tae and Kim.
They settled at the dining table, and the maids served the food. Jungkook’s stomach still hurts with each breath, making him wince. He looked at the food, sighed, and took a small bite, chewing it slowly.
“How did your day go, Kook?” Tae asked.
“Good,” Jungkook replied, not even glancing at Tae. Tae just gave a faint smile.
They ate dinner in silence.
—
After dinner, Kim left for his room, and Jungkook also went back to his.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Tae and Jin were talking.
“Hyung, I don’t think Jungkook’s not okay,” Tae said suddenly, causing Jin to pause.
“What? Why do you think that, Tae?” Jin asked, confused.
“You know, today when I woke up to get some water, I noticed the glass was empty, so I went to the kitchen. On the way back, I heard whimpering from Jungkook’s room. His door was slightly open, and I heard him saying, ‘No, please, don’t do that, don’t come.’ He was having a nightmare, Hyung. Just as I was about to go in, I heard him say, ‘Ahh, why are these nightmares coming back?’ Isn’t that strange, Hyung?” Tae asked, his voice filled with worry.
“Don’t worry, Tae. I’ll talk to him about it. Don’t stress yourself over this,” Jin said, patting Tae’s shoulder. Tae just hummed.
“He’s okay, right, Hyung?” Tae asked.
Jin smiled and said, “I don’t know what he’s going through or what’s happening, but I hope he’s alright.”
Tae hummed. “Okay, then. I’ll go to my room. I’m tired.”
“Good night, bear,” Jin said.
Tae hummed again and went to his room.
Jin sighed and took the glass of milk he had prepared for Jungkook, knowing he hadn’t eaten much at dinner.
He knocked on Jungkook’s door.
“Come in,” Jungkook said. Jin opened the door and saw Jungkook leaning against the headboard, scrolling through his phone.
Jin smiled. “Here, Kookie,” he said, handing him the glass. Jungkook looked at him, confused.
“I don’t want it,” Jungkook said.
“Just drink it, Kook. You didn’t eat much. Come on,” Jin insisted.
Jungkook sighed, set his phone aside, took the glass, and placed it on the side table.
“I’ll drink it later,” Jungkook said.
“No, drink it now. I’ll only leave if you drink it,” Jin said. Jungkook sighed in frustration, feeling too drained to argue. He picked up the glass and drank the milk while Jin sat next to him, smiling at his cute bunny.
Once Jungkook finished, he set the glass aside.
“Kook, can I ask you something?” Jin asked hesitantly.
Jungkook hummed.
“Are you okay, Kookie? Are you doing alright?” Jin’s question made Jungkook freeze.
“Huh?” Jungkook asked, confused. Someone was asking him if he was okay or not after years.
“Are you alright, Kookie? Is something bothering you?” Jin asked again.
Jungkook stared at him, biting his lip and clutching the bedsheet tightly. He looked away, taking a deep breath, struggling to keep his emotions in check. “I’m fine,” he managed to say without stuttering.
Jin smiled and held Jungkook’s hand. “Just remember, Kookie, I’m here for you, and so is Tae. If anything is bothering you, tell us. We’re here for you.”
Jungkook just stared at him, his eyes growing glossy. He quickly looked away. “I’m fine. You don’t need to worry,” Jungkook managed to say.
Jin smiled, ruffling Jungkook’s hair. “Sleep well, Kookie. Good night,” he said before leaving and closing the door.
Jungkook looked at the door, his eyes filling with tears that streamed down his face.
“I… I’m not fine.”
