Chapter 33
Jungkook was lost in his thoughts, his eyes closed as he recalled the past. He flinched when he felt a hand gently placed on his forehead. His burning eyes fluttered open, meeting Jin’s concerned gaze.
“You haven’t slept yet?” Jin asked.
Jungkook shook his head.
“Kook, it’s nearly 12, and you’re still awake? Are you feeling unwell?” Jin asked, worried.
Jungkook shook his head again. “Not sleepy,” he said groggily.
Jin sighed. “Why?”
“Because I already slept in the evening, and I’m not used to sleeping early,” Jungkook replied casually.
Jin frowned. “Early? Kook, it’s almost midnight. And you call that early? What time do you usually sleep?”
Jungkook hesitated before answering. “A-after twelve,” he admitted.
Jin gasped in shock. “Are you serious, Kook? This isn’t good for your health at all! Sleeping late and waking up early—are you kidding me?” Jin’s voice held frustration at Jungkook’s unhealthy schedule.
Jungkook remained silent.
After a brief pause, he finally said, “I’m used to it.”
Jin shook his head in disbelief and sat down beside Jungkook, speaking softly.
“Okay, I won’t scold you for your past routine, but from now on, you’ll go to sleep before 10, hmm?” Jin asked gently.
“I’ll try,” Jungkook mumbled.
Jin was surprised. He had expected Jungkook to protest or snap back at him, but instead, he was listening.
Jin smiled and ran his fingers through Jungkook’s hair. Jungkook subtly adjusted his hair, trying to hide the scar on his head.
Little did he know, Jin had already seen it.
“Umm, Kook…” Jin started hesitantly.
Jungkook hummed in response, waiting for him to continue.
“Can I ask you something?” Jin asked carefully.
Jungkook nodded, a bit nervous.
“How did you get that scar?” Jin asked, pointing to Jungkook’s head.
Jungkook’s breath hitched.
Suddenly, echoes of past voices filled his mind.
“Eomma… I want my eomma…”
“Eomma… your mom is dead… she is no more, Kook…”
“You killed her…”
Jungkook’s eyes turned glossy, but he quickly looked away before speaking.
“I got it in the same accident years ago,” he answered vaguely, referring to the incident where he lost his memories.
“Oh, okay,” Jin said, nodding. “I asked because I never noticed that scar before.”
Jungkook looked at him, confused. “You saw me after the accident?”
Jin nodded. “Yeah, I was there until you regained consciousness. After that, I moved here because Dad asked me to.”
“Kim asked you to?” Jungkook questioned, growing more confused.
“Nae. You know, if something from your past triggers you, you could be in serious danger. That’s why you were kept with Dad—because of your health condition.”
Jungkook hadn’t expected that answer.
Then, Kim’s voice echoed in his mind:
“They never visited you even once after the accident. They blamed you for your mom’s death. They never cared for you.”
Jungkook felt his heart pound.
“Who’s lying here? Kim or Jin?” He questioned himself.
He hesitated before asking, “So after that, you never visited me, right?”
He expected Jin to confirm it—99% sure he’d say yes.
But then…
“No, we did visit you,” Jin said. “Up until you were about 14, we saw you like atleast once a year. After that, Dad would send us videos of you, so we could see that you were fine and healthy. Later on, for some reason, we stopped getting updates.”
Jungkook froze.
Shock washed over him.
Everything he believed about his past… was different from what he had been told.
Jungkook stared at Jin in disbelief. “You’ve visited me? B-but I never saw you,” he asked, completely shocked.
Jin nodded. “You never knew… But do you remember on your 13th birthday, someone in a bunny costume gave you a bunch of chocolates and gifts?”
Jungkook thought for a while and then slowly nodded.
“That was me,” Jin said with a chuckle.
Jungkook couldn’t believe anything anymore. His mind was in complete chaos.
Jin noticed his confusion but decided not to push him further. “Okay, now let’s sleep, hmm?” he said gently.
Jungkook nodded slightly. Jin put away the things on the bed, climbed in, and lay beside him.
“Sleep well. Don’t hurt your hand, hmm?” Jin said.
Jungkook simply nodded, closing his eyes. Jin did the same.
But Jungkook’s mind wouldn’t stop running.
“Who is wrong here? Me? Jin? Or Kim?… Or are they all just acting? They must be… B-but still, I can’t believe it… How? So Kim was correct? Or am I wrong?” He kept questioning himself.
Jin’s words echoed in his head:
“How did you get that scar?”
Jungkook clenched his fists under the blanket.
“Eomma… I miss you a lot,” he thought bitterly. “If I wasn’t there that day, you would’ve been with me, right?”
A single tear slipped from his closed eyes.
Flashback (Two months after Jungkook turned 16)
Jungkook was living happily with his family, away from Kim. There was no disturbance, no pain—just love and warmth.
One random day, he was in the living room with Eunwoo and Suho, playing a game. The room was filled with laughter and loud voices.
“Yay! Yay! Yayyyyyy!!!” Jungkook screamed in happiness as he won the game. He immediately jumped up and started dancing in joy. “See, see, see! I told you I would win! Hahaha, I won! Yayyy!”
Meanwhile, Eunwoo huffed like a baby, folding his arms. “Cheater!” he pouted.
Jungkook glared at him. “You’ll never admit that I won, even if I won the whole world. You’d still say I cheated,” he scoffed before sitting down, mirroring Eunwoo’s pouty pose.
Suho, who had been watching, burst into laughter at their antics.
Just then, Hyesuk called from the kitchen. “Guys, come eat!”
The three of them immediately dashed to the dining table. The five of them sat together, eating lunch with happy smiles.
Jungkook took a big bite and grinned. “Eomma, you’re the best, always!”
Everyone chuckled at his enthusiasm.
“Here, eat this,” Haein said, placing more meatballs on Jungkook’s plate.
Jungkook nodded and ate happily. Then, turning to Haein with a mischievous grin, he said, “Noona, you know what?”
Eunwoo immediately sensed trouble.
“Nae?” Haein asked, amused.
“Eunwoo lost three times in a row! And he still said I cheated!” Jungkook laughed.
Everyone burst into laughter while Eunwoo rolled his eyes dramatically.
“You and your silly games,” Eunwoo mumbled, stuffing his mouth with food like an angry bird.
The others chuckled at his adorable frustration.
“Aww, so cute!” Haein giggled and pinched Eunwoo’s nose.
“Ahhhh, noonaaa!” Eunwoo whined like a child, his face turning red.
Everyone laughed again.
As they continued eating, Hyesuk suddenly spoke. “Okay, let’s go on an arcade day after tomorrow.”
“Really?!” Jungkook and Eunwoo asked in unison, eyes wide with excitement.
Hyesuk nodded. “Nae, really.”
That was it—Jungkook and Eunwoo immediately jumped from their seats, hugging Hyesuk tightly.
“Thank you so much, eomma! You’re the best!” they cheered.
Haein and Suho chuckled at their excitement, their family filled with love and laughter.
Everything was perfect.
They thought.
But fate had something else planned.
The Next Day – At School with Eunwoo and Jungkook
They were in the middle of a basketball match, playing with full enthusiasm. The crowd of students cheered loudly.
“Jungkook! Jungkook! Jungkook! Eunwoo! Eunwoo! Eunwoo!”
Jungkook ran across the court, scanning the field. “Eunwoo, here!” he shouted, gesturing for Eunwoo to pass the ball.
Eunwoo quickly threw the ball to him. Jungkook jumped and made the final shot, scoring the winning point.
The entire court erupted in cheers.
Jungkook and Eunwoo hugged each other, jumping with joy. “We did it!” they shouted in unison.
Jungkook and Eunwoo weren’t just basketball players—they were among the most talented students in their school. They excelled in studies, singing, dancing, shooting, and every activity they participated in. Their skills made them incredibly popular among their peers.
Kim was aware of their basketball games. He hated it, but for now, he chose to ignore it. He had other plans.
After the game, Jungkook and Eunwoo stood on the court, laughing and talking excitedly. Just then, Jungkook’s phone rang. The caller ID flashed: Appa.
Jungkook hesitated before excusing himself to take the call.
“Nae, appa?” he answered cautiously.
“Come to the mansion immediately,” Kim ordered and hung up without another word.
Jungkook frowned in confusion but decided to go without telling Eunwoo. Eunwoo saw him leaving but assumed he was heading to the restroom and didn’t stop him.
Jungkook hailed a cab and made his way to the mansion.
When he arrived, he took a deep breath before hesitantly opening the office door. Inside, Kim sat at his desk like a boss.
“Good evening, appa,” Jungkook greeted, bowing respectfully.
Kim barely acknowledged him. “Hmm. Bring me the file you left here five days ago,” he ordered.
Jungkook nodded. “Sure, appa,” he said and went to retrieve the file.
Moments later, he returned and placed the file on the table, bowing once more.
“Open it,” Kim instructed.
Jungkook gulped nervously and did as he was told. Inside the file, he saw a medium-sized diary. Confused, he looked at Kim, who gestured for him to continue.
Jungkook flipped it open and saw a photograph of Kim and a woman he didn’t recognize. He frowned. He had no memory of her. As he turned the next page, he found a family picture.
At the center of the photo, there was him—standing between two boys. Behind them, Kim and the same woman stood with bright smiles.
Jungkook’s breath hitched. His head throbbed.
A sharp pain shot through his skull as fragmented voices echoed in his mind. He clutched his head and whimpered in pain.
“Ahhh!” he gasped, dropping the photo.
Kim remained unmoved, watching him closely. Then, without a word, he took a tablet from his drawer and placed it on the table with a glass of water.
“Drink,” Kim said.
Jungkook, still dizzy, nodded and took the pill.
Once he calmed down, Kim finally spoke. “Any questions?”
Jungkook slowly nodded, his voice shaky. “W-who are they?”
Kim chuckled bitterly. “You don’t remember, do you?” He picked up the photo and pointed at the woman. “She is your eomma. Your real eomma.”
Jungkook’s body went rigid. “H-huh? But… Hyesuk eomma?” he stuttered in confusion.
“She is not your biological mother. She was your eomma’s friend. She took you in after you lost your memories because she didn’t have children of her own.”
Jungkook shook his head in disbelief, tears streaming down his face.
Kim pointed at the two boys in the picture. “They are your real brothers.”
Jungkook gasped. “N-no… You’re lying! My eomma is Hyesuk eomma, not her!” He started panicking, his breath coming in short gasps.
Kim sighed. “It’s the truth, Jungkook. They are your real family. I am your appa. She was your eomma. They are your hyungs. If you don’t believe me, ask your so-called eomma.”
Jungkook looked at Kim with tear-filled, confused eyes. “W-where are they now?” he asked, barely able to breathe.
Kim leaned back and said emotionlessly, “Yoona died in the same accident that caused your memory loss. Your hyungs are in Korea.”
Jungkook’s entire world crumbled in that moment.
His hands trembled as he grabbed the photo and ran out of the mansion with tears streaming down his face.
He got into a cab, his mind spinning. He kept staring at the photo, his heart breaking.
“Eomma… He’s lying, right? You’re my real eomma, right?”
The entire ride back, he sobbed silently.
When he reached home, the house was empty. He went straight to his room, shutting the door behind him. He placed the photo inside his drawer before curling up into a ball on the bed.
With trembling hands, he picked up his phone. His wallpaper was a picture of him and Hyesuk.
His vision blurred as fresh tears fell. “Eomma… He said you’re not my real eomma… That’s a lie, right?”
He sobbed until exhaustion took over, and he fell into an uneasy sleep.
After Some Hours
Hyesuk, Eunwoo, and Haein were back home. Hyesuk was preparing dinner in the kitchen while Haein helped her. Eunwoo was lounging on the couch, watching TV.
They had returned about two hours ago and had seen Jungkook sleeping. Not wanting to disturb him, they let him rest.
“Eunwoo, wake Kook up,” Haein called from the kitchen.
“Aish, noona,” Eunwoo groaned but got up anyway. He walked to Jungkook’s room, switched on the light, and sat beside him.
“Yah, wake up,” Eunwoo said, shaking Jungkook. “Kook, it’s time to eat.”
Jungkook groaned and stirred. As he opened his eyes, Eunwoo noticed something—Jungkook’s face was tear-stained, and his eyes were puffy.
Eunwoo’s smile dropped. “Hey… did you cry?” he asked, concerned.
Jungkook’s eyes welled up again, and before Eunwoo could say anything else, Jungkook suddenly lunged forward, wrapping his arms around him.
He started crying. Loudly.
Eunwoo panicked. “Hey, hey, why are you crying, Kookie? What happened?!” he asked, his voice full of worry.
“Eomma…” Jungkook sobbed.
Eunwoo’s eyes widened. “Wait, I’ll call her!” he said, immediately breaking the hug.
He rushed out of the room, running straight to Hyesuk and Haein. “Eomma! Noona! Jungkook—” he panted heavily.
Hyesuk turned to him with concern. “What happened to him?” she asked quickly.
“He’s crying really hard,” Eunwoo said, still breathless.
The moment she heard that, Hyesuk didn’t hesitate—she ran straight to Jungkook’s room, with Haein and Eunwoo following close behind.
As soon as she saw her baby crying, she immediately pulled him into a tight hug.
“Eommaaa!” Jungkook cried even louder, clinging to her desperately.
Hyesuk stroked his back, panic in her voice. “What happened, baby? What happened? Is something hurting? Shh, why are you crying like this?” she asked, trying to calm him down.
But Jungkook only sobbed harder, repeating the same word over and over: “Eomma.”
Haein, Eunwoo, and Hyesuk all looked at him in fear.
Haein turned to Eunwoo. “Did something happen at school?” she asked, worried.
Eunwoo shook his head quickly. “N-no… but after our match, he left the court in a hurry. Before that, nothing happened.” His eyes started to tear up as well.
Haein nodded and pulled Eunwoo into a side hug, trying to comfort him.
Meanwhile, Hyesuk kept asking Jungkook questions, but the only response she got was “Eomma” through his heart-wrenching cries.
“Kook, baby, please calm down… This isn’t good for your health, please,” Hyesuk pleaded, her own tears threatening to fall.
Jungkook sniffled and weakly pointed toward the drawer.
Hyesuk looked confused. “You want me to open that?” she asked gently.
Jungkook nodded.
Hyesuk hesitated but finally broke the hug and walked toward the drawer. When she opened it, her eyes widened in shock.
Inside was the photo.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up. “K-Kook…” she whispered, already tearing up.
Jungkook looked at her with desperate eyes. “Eomma… Appa is lying, right?” he sobbed, his voice breaking. “Y-you’re my mom… right?”
Hyesuk didn’t answer. She looked down, unable to meet his eyes.
Haein and Eunwoo exchanged confused glances. Frowning, Haein took the photo from her mother’s hands and studied it carefully.
Jungkook’s cries grew louder. “E-eomma, it’s not true, right? Eomma!”
Hyesuk took a deep breath, struggling to hold back her tears. Finally, she whispered, “I… I’m sorry, Kook.”
The moment those words left her lips, her tears started flowing uncontrollably.
Jungkook froze.
His entire world shattered.
