Chapter 77
Meanwhile, with Tae and Jimin
The library was quiet, but not for Taehyung.
He was pacing restlessly near one of the tall shelves, phone clutched tightly in his hand. The soft thuds of his footsteps echoed across the silent room, where Jimin and Jaein sat nearby, watching him with growing concern.
He tried calling Jungkook again and again. But no answer.
Then he again called Jin but, still nothing.
He had already called Jungkook’s guards and checked with the university but they had no idea where he was, theybsearched the whole University. That only worsened the sinking feeling in his stomach.
His heart raced. Jin had told him earlier strictly to no come out.
And when Jin ever sounded that serious, it meant something was terribly wrong.
But what? That was the question for tae. He was worried.
“Jimin-ah!” Taehyung’s voice cracked with emotion as he turned toward his friend. “He isn’t picking up at all. Neither is hyung. What do I do? What if something’s happened to him?”
Jimin stood from his chair and approached him slowly.
“Tae,” he said gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Breathe. Just sit down for a second and calm your mind, okay? I know you’re scared… but panicking won’t help.”
Jaein, who had been quietly watching, nodded in agreement and reached out, placing a reassuring hand over Taehyung’s.
But Taehyung shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair, his breaths turning uneven. “I can’t sit still, Jimin. I just can’t. I have this horrible feeling, I just know something’s wrong.”
His eyes darted to his phone again, filled with desperation.
He dialed Jungkook’s number again, his thumb nearly trembling as it hovered over the call icon.
The phone rang for some time. Then the call was connected.
he shot up to his feet, almost shouting, “Kook?! Where are you?! Are you okay? Why weren’t you picking up?!”
But the voice that responded wasn’t Jungkook’s. It was Jin
“Tae…” Jin spoke, his voice sounding steady but Taehyung could tell he was forcing it.
“Hyung, why are you picking up the call? Where is Jungkook? Is he okay? Why weren’t you answering earlier? Is everything fine?” Taehyung asked, his voice filled with deep worry and rising panic.
Jimin and Jaein looked at him, concern growing in their eyes.
“Tae… Jungkook… he will be fine,” Jin said carefully.
The moment Jin finished that sentence, Taehyung let out a panicked yell.
“What do you mean he will be fine?! What happened, hyung?!” he was worried, his chest rising and falling with shallow, quick breaths.
Jin sighed heavily on the other end of the line. “Come to our hospital… and be careful on the way.”
“I’ll be there in minutes,” Taehyung said, and immediately hung up.
“What happened, Tae?” Jimin asked, standing up quickly.
Taehyung’s voice cracked as he shattered the words out. “Jungkook… he’s in the hospital.”
Jimin and Jaein both gasped in shock.
“Don’t worry. He’ll be fine,” Jimin said quickly, already grabbing his bag. “Let’s go, hmm?”
He turned to Jaein and gently said, “Make sure to go home safely. I’ll call you later, okay?”
Jaein nodded with worry in her eyes. “Take care, both of you.”
With that, Taehyung and Jimin rushed out together, running straight to the car,.hearts racing, fear pounding in their chests, and only one thought echoing in their minds was “Jungkook… please be okay.”
Meanwhile, with Jin
He was standing outside the ICU. The glass window was foggy now, he couldn’t see anything inside. After ending the call, he rubbed his forehead in frustration. His heart was heavy, and worry weighed down his chest.
“Please, Kookie… don’t scare me. Just please be fine… I still have so many things I want to do for you…” Jin mumbled under his breath, his voice cracking slightly with emotion.
Just then, he looked up when he heard a broken voice call out, “Noona…”
It was Eunwoo. He was panting, tears already falling from his eyes.
Haein, seeing her brother, immediately wiped her own tears and rushed to him. Jin recognized the boy instantly. He was the one he had once seen Jungkook clinging to a frame of him and eunwoo while asleep. He also remembered seeing him when he went out with the maknae line at the restaurant.
He hadn’t expected him to be Haein’s brother.
Haein gently guided Eunwoo to sit on one of the nearby chairs. She crouched in front of him, her voice soft but firm.
“Hey, Eun… look at Noona. Nothing will happen to him, hmm? He’ll be fine. He won’t leave us. Stay strong, okay? Don’t cry,” she said, trying her best to stay composed for her little brother.
Eunwoo sobbed and stuttered through his tears, “H-He’s in pain… and… I said such harsh words to him… He’s in there because of me… I shouldn’t have left him alone. He’s hurting because of me…”
“No, Eun… it’s not your fault,” Haein said gently, wiping his tears. “Don’t blame yourself. Kookie will be okay. Don’t cry, hmm? If you cry, he’ll be sad too, right?”
“Ani… he won’t be sad,” Eunwoo choked out, his voice cracking. “Because he… he hate me. And I hate him too. I don’t want to see him, and he doesn’t want to see me either.”
His words came fast no, anger, just pain, and guilt mixing into one.
“He just throws all these hurtful words and then acts like nothing happened. He makes me cry every single day. I don’t like this version of him. He’s changed so much. He pushes everyone away. He hates me. And I hate him too. I won’t forgive him, for letting himself suffer alone and for making all of us feel like strangers.”
Eunwoo was sobbing harder now. “He’s really an idiot. I hate him.”
Haein didn’t respond right away. Instead, she sighed softly, then pulled Eunwoo into a warm embrace.
Eunwoo didn’t resist. He collapsed into her arms, snuggling into her shoulder like a child seeking comfort, crying harder than ever.
And Haein held him, heart breaking silently for both euwnoo and Jungkook.
Meanwhile, Jin, who was already too confused, now became even more confused and scared about the truth. He wanted to know everything, but not right now. All he wanted to hear first was that Jungkook was fine. He didn’t want anything else at that moment.
He leaned against the wall, taking deep breaths to calm himself. He was scared as hell. The way Jungkook had collapsed in his arms, completely pale, his hands cold, it all terrified him.
He looked over at Haein and Eunwoo. Eunwoo was crying really hard, his face red and tear-stained. Haein was trying her best to calm him down, but he wasn’t listening.
“Eunwoo, please baby… don’t cry, please. Please don’t cry. He will be fine. I promise,” Haein pleaded, her voice trembling.
Still, Eunwoo kept crying uncontrollably. Jin felt bad for the boy. He walked closer and gently said, “Hey, Eunwoo… he’ll be fine. Don’t cry. Come on, don’t cry.”
Jin crouched down in front of him, beside Haein. Eunwoo shook his head, his voice broken. “He… he’s in pain…”
Jin sighed and pulled the boy into his arms, wrapping him in a comforting hug. He softly rubbed Eunwoo’s back and said, “Don’t worry. Nothing will happen to him. He’s strong. He’ll be fine. He won’t leave us. Don’t cry.”
Eunwoo didn’t respond, he just stayed in Jin’s embrace, still sobbing quietly. Jin continued to soothe him, just like he always did with his own brothers, and slowly, Eunwoo began to calm down.
Meanwhile, Haein had tears in her eyes as she watched Jin care for her brother so gently. She was deeply moved.
Jin eventually broke the hug and gently wiped Eunwoo’s tears. He smiled softly and said, “Be strong, hmm? He’ll be fine.” He then caressed the boy’s hair in a comforting gesture.
“Really? He will be fine?” Eunwoo asked with tears in his eyes. “Really. I promise,” Jin said gently.
Eunwoo sniffled and looked at Haein. Haein nodded in assurance. Eunwoo slowly nodded back.
“You wanna sleep? You look so tired. Didn’t you sleep yesterday?” Haein asked. Eunwoo just shook his head. “I’ll stay,” he said quietly.
Before Haein could say anything, Jin spoke up, “Just rest for a while, hmm? After you wake up, you can see him. He will be fine. You really look so tired.”
Eunwoo looked at Haein for assurance. She nodded softly. Eunwoo hummed in agreement.
Haein gave him a small smile and gently guided him to the waiting room.
Jin sat back down, placing his hands on his head, overwhelmed with emotion.
Though he said that Jungkook will be fine to euwnoo and calmed him, he couldnt calm himself. He sat there, silently praying for Jungkook.
After a while, he heard the sound of hurried footsteps echoing down the hallway. He looked up and saw Hobi, Yoongi, and Namjoon rushing toward him. Jin seeing them, felt a small wave of relief wash over him.
“Hyung!” Hobi called out as they came closer, almost running.
“What happened? Is he fine? How did he faint?” they bombarded him with questions.
Jin held his head in frustration and pain. “He had severe chest pain… They’re still treating him. He looked so pale, and his pulse was dropping. I don’t even know how to calm myself right now,” Jin said, his voice breaking.
“H-he’ll be fine, hyung. Don’t worry,” Hobi said softly, trying his best to comfort him.
Jin didn’t reply. He just sat there, numb, the weight of everything pressing down on him.
“Hyung, he’s strong,” Namjoon added firmly. “He’ll be okay. He won’t leave us, not now. Don’t think anythingelse. He’ll pull through. He must.”
Jin nodded slightly and mumbled under his breath, “He will be…”
Then they heard Yoongi, his tone quiet but sure. “Don’t stress, hyung. Our Kook will be fine.”
Jin nodded again, holding tightly onto their words like lifelines.
After a few minutes, they heard the sound of more footsteps, it was Jimin and Taehyung.
“Hyung…” Taehyung called out, his voice filled with panic and worry. Jin immediately stood up.
Tae rushed to him, almost breathless. “What happened to Kook? Is he okay? Why is he in the ICU? What happened, hyung?” he asked, on the verge of tears.
Jin sighed, then pulled Tae into a tight hug. “He’ll be fine, Tae. The doctors are treating him. He’ll be okay. Don’t worry,” Jin tried to reassure him, though his own voice was shaking.
A tear slipped from Tae’s eye. “Ani… what exactly happened to him?” he asked again, clearly desperate for answers.
Jin slowly broke the hug and explained, “He was in the outer area… some rivals were after him. When we arrived, he got a severe chest pain, and then… h-he fainted.” Jin’s voice cracked slightly. “But don’t worry. He’ll be okay, hmm?”
Tae gasped, his breath catching. His eyes filled with more tears. “He must have been so scared…” he whispered, his voice trembling as he broke down. Jin immediately pulled him into another hug, gently rubbing his back.
“He’ll be fine… our Kookie will be fine,” Jin whispered, trying to convince both Tae and himself.
Jimin, standing nearby, was also a mess of tears. Yoongi pulled him into a quiet embrace, wrapping his arms protectively around him as Jimin sobbed against his shoulder.
Yoongi gently stroked his back.
“He’ll be alright, Chim. He’s strong. He’ll come back to us.”
Time Skips…
It had been an hour since Jungkook was shifted to the ICU. Still, there was no update from the doctor.
Haein had managed to get Eunwoo to sleep in the waiting room. Now, she sat quietly on a chair, hands clasped together as she silently prayed for Jungkook’s recovery.
Jin, on the other hand, was pacing the corridor, his worry growing with every passing second. He looked exhausted, his steps heavy with fear and helplessness.
Taehyung and Jimin sat beside Hoseok and Namjoon, their expressions tight with anxiety. Yoongi was pacing too, occasionally glancing at the ICU doors, as if hoping they would open at any moment.
The atmosphere was heavy. No one spoke. No one dared to break the tense silence.
Then… finally, the ICU doors opened, revealing Dr. Hwang and his assistants. The moment they saw him, everyone stood up immediately, hearts racing.
Dr. Hwang gave them a small nod before speaking. “He’s stable now, we’ll shift him to the general ward. You’ll be able to see him there, but please, don’t disturb him. He still needs rest,” the doctor said calmly.
A collective sigh of relief echoed through the hallway. Shoulders sagged, hearts slowed, ffinally, there was a bit of peace after the storm.
Dr. Hwang then turned his attention toward Haein and Jin. “Jin-ssi, Haein-ah… come to my office,” he said, his tone still professional but softer than before. Then he turned and walked away.
Haein sighed deeply, feeling her knees weaken slightly from the emotional weight. She turned to look at Jin, who was already watching her.
His eyes were filled with exhaustion and unspoken questions.
He gave her a small nod, gesturing for her to follow him. Haein stood up silently and walked beside him, both of them heading toward the doctor’s cabin
Inside the Cabin
They both sat in front of Dr. Hwang.
“Did he strain himself a lot? Didn’t he sleep properly?” Dr. Hwang asked.
Jin spoke first, “Ani… I make sure he sleeps on time——” He was cut off when Haein spoke, “He isn’t. And yes, he strained himself.”
Jin looked at her, shocked by her response. “Haein… I clearly said that he should not strain himself. You guys know about his heart condition, right?” the doctor said, adding more confusion to Jin.
“What condition? What is with his heart? Samchooon told me that he’s fine. That he was just weak because he wasn’t taking his medicines and meals on time,” Jin asked, frustration growing in his voice.
“His heart’s blood flow is slightly unbalanced. That’s why I told him not to strain himself repeatedly,” Dr. Hwang replied. “I assumed you knew, Jin-ssi.”
Jin shook his head in disbelief “Is.. is that serious?” he asked.
“It is… but only at times, like today,” the doctor explained. “Whenever he strains himself too much, it triggers the imbalance. It’s treatable with the proper medicines I prescribed. You just have to take full care of him and make sure he avoids anything physically or emotionally straining.”
Jin let out a shaky breath. “Why wasn’t I told about this? Why did they hide this from me?” That was the only question ringing in his head now.
“He is stable for now. He had several cardiac episodes, worsened further because he strained himself too much. He also experienced a panic attack. Make sure he doesn’t have those again. Care for him, comfort him whenever he gets nightmares. Ensure he’s calm, no panic triggers. He must stay fit and stable for his condition. It’s good that he’s taking his meals on time, just make sure he doesn’t overexert himself or get stressed.” the doctor advised gently.
Jin nodded, processing it all with furrowed brows.
“Uncle… about his panic attacks…” Haein asked quietly. “Tell me honestly… Were they more frequent or worse when I wasn’t there?”
Jin looked at her, his expression hardening with confusion and frustration of not knowing the truths. “What do you mean by less or frequent when you weren’t there? Why are you saying it like that?” he asked, frustration edging into his voice.
Haein turned to him and said calmly, yet softly, “You’ll get your answers, Jin… I promise.”
Jin stared at her, his mind spinning with questions, but before he could say more, the doctor spoke again.
“I’m sorry for keeping this from you… but her question was fair. The panic episodes were quite severe,.especially in the beginning. He got them at least More than three times a month in the first two years. Last year, it was less frequent,.only three severe episodes. And then today…”
He paused, sighing before continuing. “Last year, this same day, he had a major panic episode. He broke down after learning it was the death anniversary of Hyesuk-ssi. And today… it happened again, just like back then.”
Jin gasped, heart skipping. Hyesuk? Death anniversary? He sat frozen, confusion growing with every word.
Hyesuk is dead? How? When? Was this someone else? Or was it the Hyesuk he knew? What is the relationship of Jungkook with her that he gets panic attacks because of remembering her death anniversary?
He was completely overwhelmed… but he didn’t question it, at least, not yet.
Haein sighed and said, “Uncle… I beg you… Please don’t hide anything about his health from me just because of Hyunwoo uncle or the Kims. Please.” Her voice trembled, tears glistening in her eyes.
Dr. Hwang gave a small, understanding nod..
After some time, they both stepped out of the cabin. Jin’s expression was unreadable, his mind clearly racing with confusion, questions, and emotions.
“J… Jin,” Haein called softly, trying to stop him.
But Jin didn’t even look at her. “Let’s talk later, Haein,” he said, his voice firm and final and little tired.
Without another word, he walked away with quick, determined steps toward the ICU where Jungkook had been shifted.
Haein stood still, watching his fading figure. She closed her eyes for a second, pain weighing heavy in her chest.
“I’m sorry, Jin… for hiding everything from you. I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to break you completely. But you need to know, before things get worse,” she whispered to herself.
Meanwhile with the others…
They were inside the general ward. No one dared to step closer to Jungkook.
He looked far too small in that hospital bed. An IV was attached to his hand, the pulse monitor clipped to his index finger. An oxygen mask covered half his face. His sweat-damp hair clung to his pale forehead, and his skin was far too colorless, though there was a faint flush on his cheeks from the fever.
He lay wrapped in a duvet, but even that didn’t hide how fragile he looked.
The door opened. Jin walked in, his steps heavy. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself before entering fully.
When his eyes landed on Jungkook lying there, so still, so pale, his heart clenched at the sight. His jungkook looked so fragile. So vulnerable. Like a whisper could break him.
Jin walked slowly to the bed. The others quietly stood back, watching. He took a seat on Jungkook’s left side.
He reached for Jungkook’s hand, careful, gentle. A bandage was wrapped around it. Jin’s fingers trembled slightly as he took that soft hand in his, treating it like feather.
“You scared me a lot, baby,” Jin whispered, voice cracking. “Just open your eyes and talk to me. Only that can make me feel better…”
He gently brushed Jungkook’s hair back, his thumb stroking his forehead.
“Hyungie is scared for you… so you better be okay, hmm?” he whispered again, finally a tear slipping down his cheek. But didn’t let more to fall.
He sat there, quietly caressing Jungkook’s hair and holding his hand, pouring every ounce of love and care into his touch.
After some time, he stood up slowly and adjusted Jungkook’s duvet with care, making sure his little brother was warm and comfortable.
He looked at the others, who all had tears in their eyes. “Guys, don’t worry. He’s our Jungkook… he’ll be just fine. See? He fought and came back to us,” Jin said, trying to comfort his brothers.
They all nodded slowly. Jin then noticed Taehyung silently crying. He walked over and gently pulled him into a hug.
“Tae, don’t cry. Come on, he’s fine now,” Jin whispered. Tae just nodded and muttered, “I… I was scared…” Jin’s heart clenched at the broken words.
He continued hugging Taehyung, softly murmuring soothing words into his ear until the younger finally calmed down a little.
Then Jin helped him sit down on a chair and handed him some water. Tae drank quietly.
Jin looked around and saw Jimin wiping his tears too. “Tae stopped crying, now will you stop too, Chim? Come on, don’t cry now,” Jin said as he went to hug him as well.
“I’m not crying…” Jimin mumbled, voice trembling. Jin chuckled softly, knowing he was lying, but didn’t tease him further. He helped Jimin sit down too.
“Guys, should I give a group hug to all of you, huh?” Jin joked, trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere.
This was Jin Even when he was at his lowest, even when his heart was breaking, he made sure his surroundings didn’t fall apart. He always cared more about his brothers than himself. That’s what made him their hyung.
Then, they heard the door open. It was Haein.
She looked at everyone briefly, her eyes immediately finding Jungkook on the bed. Thhe moment she saw him, her heart shattered all over again.
“Kook…” she whispered as she rushed to his side. She sat beside him, gently taking his hand in hers.
“Please be fine, baby… I’m here now. I won’t let anything happen to you anymore… I promise to keep you safe. I’m sorry for leaving you alone… I’m really sorry… Forgive your noona, baby… Please wake up and call me noona again…” Her voice trembled as tears rolled down her cheeks.
The others stood frozen, staring at her in silence shocked, confused, and speechless.
After a while, she stood up to leave. But just as she turned, she heard Jin’s voice behind her. “Haein-ah.”
His voice was soft… too soft. She froze in her steps, her tears threatening to fall again. She was toched by jin that he wasn’t taking out his frustration and anger on her, or even forcing her for his questions, even after all happened.
“C…can you tell me everything…?” His voice cracked mid-sentence, quiet and trembling.
He wasn’t angry. He just wanted to know the truth. He just wanted answers.
