The next morning, I was already at my desk before Vani walked in.
I am better now, so joined my office.

I had been waiting for vani, my own little entertainment. Yesterday’s flashes of jealousy on her face had been priceless, accept nahi kregi koch, lekin feel to krti hai… and today I want more.

The door opened and she entered, professional as ever,
Madam heroine.

Her hair neatly tied in a low ponytail, eyes on her files. She didn’t look at me. Good. Pretend all you want, Vani. But I’ll make sure you can’t ignore me.

I leaned back in my chair,my phone buzzed. Rhena’s message popped up with a playful emoji. Just in time.

“Morning,” Vani said politely, not raising her gaze from the papers.

“Morning,” I replied, voice laced with amusement.

I tapped my phone a little, pretending to type, said loudly enough to hear “Ah, Rhena again… persistent girl. She wants me to join her for brunch. What do you think? Should I go? Huh vani? ”

Vani’s hand froze over her notepad. Just for a second. But I caught it. Every flicker of emotion on her face was no less than a prize. She recovered quickly, raising an “do you think i give a fu’k” brow.

“You should ask yourself, Mr. Brar. Not me. It’s your… personal matter. And i am just a business partner ” Her tone was unimpressed, eyes still on her notes.

I almost laughed. The way she emphasized personal matter
… uffff

“Oh? But you seemed so… invested yesterday. I thought maybe you’d like to meddle in,” he teased smoothly, leaning forward. “I don’t want to make the wrong choice, after all.”

Her eyes gave me a ” you are soon going to be dead” warning . “We have real work to finish. Incentives, roles, plans—remember? You might want to focus on that instead of your… brunch invitations.”she said resistant to roll her eyes.

I grinned inwardly. She was angry, but anger meant reaction. And reaction meant she cared more than she admitted. Exactly what I wanted.

This is jealousy.

And God, it made me feel alive.

This afternoon I decided to push it further. Why stop at one harmless tease when I can make a whole day out of it? So I asked Rhena to drop by again—“casually,” of course. She’s always too eager, and I knew Vani wouldn’t miss a single detail.

When rhena enter, she was glaring at her, like she’ll eat her alive. And then me, like she’ll eat me with salt with satisfaction.

Um i didn’t mean eat in that way.

When Rhena touched my arm a little longer than necessary, I didn’t move away. Instead, I let my gaze flick toward Vani, just for a fraction of a second, enough to catch the flash in her eyes before she quickly buried herself in a file.

She thinks she hides it well. She doesn’t. I see everything.

I sat back, satisfied. Let her keep denying it. The more she hides, the more fun this game gets. And one day, Vani, you’ll stop pretending.

“ sir” rhena said catching my attention “ hmm?” I hummed

“ you know before becoming a nurse, a worked at a company too. So i can help you with this” I raised my eyebrows

“ only, only if you wanntt….and did you check i also emailed you the data” she streched the words, like she’ll seduce me with a little act of hers

I looked at vani, and she was looking like she’ll explode any second

She tilt her head and glare at me, warning me, and saying “I am warning you” through her eyes.

Ab to mai krunga,
Tumne mna kese kiyaa?

“ why not rhena? I am sure you’ll help me the most.” I said too sweetly

I leaned back, and checked her email, “rubbish“.  Now i know why she is not working in some company. My voice casual but loud “Rhena, the projections you made are quite sharp. I am impressed.” Safed juth.

A spark lit in Vani’s eyes. She looked up for just a second, and the fire there-God, it was exactly what I wanted.

Is aag mai mai jal jau?
“Voh sach mai jla degi … Stay alive till you can” my subconscious mind mocked me.

I smirked inwardly, continuing, “We’ll need your input again for the incentive plans.”

Vani finally snapped. “I already prepared the incentive framework,” she said, her voice clipped. “I thought you wanted me to handle it.”

I tilted my head, enjoying the storm brewing inside her. “I do. But there’s no harm in having Rhena’s perspective too. Competition makes things sharper, doesn’t it?”

Her knuckles turned white against the pen she held. She wanted to throw it, maybe at me, maybe at Rhena. I wanted her to. I wanted to see her break that polished composure just once.

Just once

Because every flicker of jealousy in her gaze told me one thing-she cared. More than she wanted to admit.

And I was going to drag that truth out of her, no matter how long this game lasted.

“ sirr…. So can you teach me other stuff so i can help better.” rhena again interrupted my ” aankhon hi aankhon mai batte hoti hai ” moment with her.

“ whyyy nottttt ena….?” I purposely gave her nickname

Thats it.

Vani place the files on the table with a thud which we in her hands a few seconds ago.

And stood up, her hands leaning at the table

“ are you fucking SERIOUS??” She shout, barley controlling herself

I leaned back.

And rhena choose to spoke,
Vani se panga rhena… Chordgi ni tumhe… Aur mai bacha paunga ya nahi…. Pta nahi….

Beta tu bhi ni bache ga jese tere halaat gai .. my mind again mocked me

“ am sorry maam. But i think i can help sir–” vani interrupted

Vani pointed a finger at her

“ you…. Look. You are a nurse so act like one, sir tea, sir blanket, sir tie, sir coffee, sir yeh, sir woh, you fucking–” while saying she looked into my eyes and stopped,

Vani bolo na yar please

( Vani continue please)

She took a deep breath

“ look rhena………. I am not against you or something. Its just there are some personal things and I can’t afford it to get public…..so….”

She gets quiet, maybe expecting rhena to understand what she means

But meri jaan tumhe to abhi tak mai ni smjh pata, yeh bachi kya samjhe gi?

“ so?” Rhena asked with a raised brow.

Vani closed her eyes  and looked at me with “done with her ” eyes.

Then i pity her, and meddled

“ rhena, i know you are trying to help, but this is not the right, if you wanna help you can help my secratary into arranging something i need. Is that okay with you?” i said and she made a
” Are you seriously doing this with me” face

“ if you say so …” her face fell
“ I’ll go.” she stood up and went out

After she went out, i turned to vani, who was still red from anger, but was calming down

“ kareli abh khush?” I asked her

“ bitter guard are you happy now?)

She roll her eyes, and refused to look at me,  too engrossed in her files

“ vani.” i said sincerely, with no amusement behind

She looked at me this time

“ Itni nafrat krti ho mujhse? Ya itna bura hu mai, that you don’t even like me? Hmm?” I asked.

She looked down at her files and started flipping the pages

“ esa koch nahi hai nav.” she said.

“ to kesa hai fir vani?” I asked the very next second, my brow slightly lifting. Her gaze met mine.

And this time, it stays for some minutes

“ Nav I don’t like you in that way. ” she said too quiet, and again went to her files

Grabbing a pen this time and started scribbling at notpad

“ then why do you get affected when rhena is around? Then why did you get affected so much when i was in coma, you think i didn’t hear a word? My body was unconscious vani, my mind wasn’t. Why not you decide if you like me or hate me or just.  …… business partners?” I questioned her. .

I need my answers. But she kept dozing them always.

She went quite with a wide eye expression on her face

“ speechless?” I questioned her again

“ Navvvvvv …. I can’t give you false hope …. Me, you, us.. never …. Its not possible.” she said..

“ why vani? Kya kami hai mujhme?” I asked her… “ Vani I think i like you.” I said with a realising breath

“ you think? You think nav? This is not a think ” she took a pause, and release a long breath, which may or maynot she was holding

“ nav listen, you can get with whomever you want —“

I interrupted her

“ i want to be with you. …”

“except for me. Nav i am not a good match for you… For anyone… So please….” she stood up without waiting for a reply

And she walk out of the door, leaving me alone in meeting room
