Chapter 20

Miley woke slowly, the quiet of her room pressing in.

Everything felt familiar-the faint moonlight spilling across her bed, the soft ticking of the clock on the wall, the edges of her diary and pen waiting at her bedside.

She stretched and glanced at her phone.

11:11 PM.

A shiver ran down her spine, not from cold, but from the timing.

It felt… deliberate, somehow.

Then she heard it.

A soft, raspy cough.

Her heart jumped.

She froze, listening.

It came again-slower this time, deliberate, almost measured.

It was not her imagination.

Not the creak of the house, not the wind brushing the windows.

Miley pulled her blanket around her shoulders and sat up.

Her eyes adjusted to the shadows.

The room looked the same-her diary, her pen, her notebook-but the cough had stirred something.

Something in her gut that whispered she wasn’t alone.

The sound faded, leaving the room heavy and quiet.

Her chest still raced, and she hugged her knees.

She tried to tell herself it was a trick of the night, a shadow, a memory.

But she knew better.

Earlier that day had felt oddly smooth, yet every repetition made her more observant.

The classroom, the hallways, the way Felix moved and smiled-it all felt known, even before it happened.

And now this cough… it wasn’t meant to be repeated.

Miley closed her eyes for a moment, thinking.

Her room had always felt like hers, but now it felt like a vessel, a place where something had been contained.

The realization made her stomach twist.

She remembered the calendar:

October 12.

Her diary from yesterday had the date October 13.

Somehow, this had pulled her back again, but with a detail she hadn’t noticed before.

The cough.

The presence of someone else.

She flipped through her diary quickly, scanning past entries, repeating events, dates, Felix forgetting and remembering, quizzes, walks to school, every familiar moment.

Everything pointed to the same pattern, and now-now it had signs she couldn’t ignore.

At home back

Miley exhaled shakily and closed the diary.

Tomorrow-or rather, the next day in this repeating-would come as usual.

She knew it.

But for the first time, she felt the weight of being watched, of the past bleeding into the present.

Pulling her blanket tighter, she whispered to herself,

“I have to understand this. I have to remember.”

The night settled around her, thick and patient, as if waiting for her next move.
