Chapter 21
Everything happened the way it always did.
The morning.
The school.
The words people said as if they’d practiced them.
By nightfall, Miley didn’t try to pretend she was tired.
She stayed awake.
The house felt different after midnight-not louder, not darker. Just… aware. The walls seemed to hold their breath. Even the clock sounded cautious as it ticked toward something.
11:09.
11:10.
Miley sat up in bed.
Her eyes were already on the door when the sound came.
A cough.
Dry. Old. Too slow to belong to anyone her age.
Her stomach tightened.
It came again.
From inside the house.
She slipped out of bed, bare feet silent against the floor. The hallway light was off, but she didn’t turn it on. She didn’t want to announce herself.
The sound came again-closer now.
Her chest felt tight as she followed it down the hall, stopping in front of the door.
The one she’d never opened.
A memory surfaced without warning.
Her mother’s voice, low and firm: “Don’t open that room, Miley. There are spiders in there.”
Miley hated spiders.
Even now, the word made her skin prickle.
Her hand hovered near the knob.
The coughing came again. Softer this time. Almost tired.
Her fingers closed around the handle.
She turned it.
Locked.
Relief and fear crashed into each other.
Before she could step back, something shifted behind her.
Not a sound.
Not a breath.
Just the feeling of being seen.
Her heart slammed against her ribs. Her breathing turned uneven, shallow, too fast. Her hands trembled. Her legs felt weak, like they might fold if she moved too quickly.
Slowly-too slowly-she turned around.
Nothing.
The hallway was empty.
Then-
CRASH.
A sharp sound broke the silence.
A photo frame slid off the small table beside the wall, hitting the floor. Glass shattered, scattering across the wood.
Miley flinched, pressing a hand to her mouth.
She waited.
Nothing else moved.
Carefully, she stepped forward, avoiding the glass. She crouched, hands shaking as she lifted the frame.
The glass was broken-but the photo was intact.
She placed it back on the table.
And froze.
It was her.
Younger. Smiling. Hair tangled by the wind. Standing on a beach, sunlight caught in her eyes.
Her reflection stared back from the cracked glass-older, paler, afraid.
The house was quiet again
Too quiet.
And somewhere behind the locked door, something waited.
