Chapter 22

Miley woke up with a strange certainty in her chest.

Not panic.

Not fear.

Just a quiet decision.

The morning light was pale, barely touching the edges of her room. The house was still-too still-but she didn’t think much of it. She lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, listening to her own breathing.

I don’t want to go today.

The thought surprised her.

It wasn’t tiredness.

It wasn’t sickness.

It was…..curiosity.

She sat up slowly, waiting for something to stop her. Nothing did.

Downstairs, the kitchen smelled the same-toast, tea, warmth. Her mother stood by the counter, moving calmly, exactly as she always did.

“Mum,” Miley said.

Her voice sounded smaller than usual.

Her mother turned, smiling. “Good morning, sweetheart.”

Miley hesitated. “I… I don’t think I’m going to school today.”

The words hung in the air.

Her mother didn’t look shocked.

Didn’t question her.

She just nodded.

“Not feeling well?” she asked gently.

Miley frowned. “I guess… yeah.”

Her father looked up from the table. “That’s fine,” he said easily. “Rest today.”

Too easy.

No concern.

No checking her forehead

No pause.

“Okay,” Miley said, unease creeping in. “I’ll just… stay home.”

Her mother placed a cup of tea in front of her. “Drink this.”

Miley wrapped her hands around the mug

It was warm.

Too warm.

The clock on the wall ticked

9:10.

Miley blinked.

She looked again.

Still 9:10.

Her chest tightened.

“I’m going to lie down,” she said quickly.

Her parents smiled at the same time.

“Of course,” her mother said. “That’s best.”

Miley turned away before she could look at them too closely.

The hallway felt longer than usual.

The air felt heavier with each step.

When she reached the living room, she froze.

Her diary lay open on the table.

She was sure she had left it in her room.

Slowly, she walked closer.

The page was blank

Then-

Ink appeared.

Not written.

Forming.

Miley’s breath caught.

The letters slid into place as if dragged by something unseen.

You are not-

The sentence collapsed into itself.

New words scratched over it.

Routine is safety
Routine is mercy

“Mum?” Miley called.

No answer.

The walls creaked.

A low, aching sound, like the house shifting its weight.

The air felt closer.

Her head began to pound.

The ink moved faster now, frantic, angry-

Do not stay
Do not-

The pen marks tore through the page.

Miley staggered back.

From behind her-

A soft cough.

Old. Wet.

Too close.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

“Miley,” her mother’s voice said.

Miley turned slowly.

Her mother stood in the hallway.

Smiling.

Her eyes were wrong.

Too still. Too empty.

“You weren’t supposed to test it,” her mother said calmly.

Miley shook her head. “This isn’t real.”

Her mother tilted her head, the movement delayed, unnatural.

“You already know what happens when you don’t follow the day.”

The walls felt closer now.

The ceiling pressed down.

Miley couldn’t breathe properly.

The diary fell to the floor, pages flipping violently.

Dates changed.

October 11.
October 11.
October 11.

Then one final sentence burned itself into
the paper:

If you do not follow the day, the day will take you.

The coughing grew louder.

Right behind the locked door.

“Mum, please,” Miley whispered.

Her mother stepped forward.

The floor groaned.

Then-

RINGGGGGGGGG.

Miley screamed and jolted upright.

Her alarm.

Morning light flooded her room.

Her heart raced, her hands shaking violently.

She was in bed.

Her room was normal.

She sucked in a breath, then another.

“It was j-just a dream,” she whispered.

She reached for her diary with trembling hands.

It was closed.

Normal.

She opened it.

Blank page.

No ink.

No warning.

She let out a shaky laugh.

Then she looked at the clock.

7:10 AM.

Her stomach dropped.

Slowly, she picked up her pen.

Her hand hovered.

She wrote the date.

October 11.

The ink stayed still.

But Miley didn’t relax.

Because deep down-

She knew.

She hadn’t been punished.

She had been warned.

And next time, the house might not let her wake up.
