Chapter 41
Time had folded over itself, neat as a paper crane, yet sharp as a knife. And in its folds, nothing was free, not even the living.
The morning sun spilled into the open windows, golden and cheerful, and yet it felt strange to Miley.
The house smelled like breakfast and candle wax, warm and safe-but every sound seemed muted, as if the world had forgotten how to reach her.
Her great-grandmother hummed as she moved from room to room, her smile bright, eyes sparkling with triumph.
The ritual had “worked,”
she seemed to believe, and her happiness filled the air, wrapping itself around the walls like smoke
Her great-grandfather sat at the small table, drinking his tea, calm as ever.
He didn’t seem to know-or perhaps notice-that something unnatural had begun.
His serene eyes made Miley’s chest tighten.
What had been done? What was happening now?
She drifted quietly, almost afraid to breathe, and observed them.
To the world, she was invisible.
She tried to speak, to warn, to plead, but no sound left her lips.
Not even a whisper.
Not even a sigh.
She tried to move objects, but her hands passed through them like mist.
The house was showing her everything, just as she had asked in her diary.
It was letting her see the beginning again, teaching her, but she was trapped as witness only.
A silent participant in a play that had already started.
Miley’s eyes wandered across the familiar furniture, searching for something, anything that could help her. And then, in a quiet corner, she noticed a small bronze key, tucked behind a dusty book on the shelf-a key she had never seen before.
She reached for it instinctively, but her hand passed through it.
Yet the sight alone made her heart race.
She realized, though she didn’t yet know why.
She sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around her knees.
I’m not the chosen one,
she whispered to herself.
I’m just… part of it. Her thoughts tumbled over one another. What if I can’t change the loop? Will it always stay like this? And if I do-what about him? Will he… will he still be safe? Will he remember? Will he even know I tried?
A small gust of wind ruffled the curtains, and for a brief moment, Miley felt the house itself breathe around her, patient and indifferent, showing her the world as it had started.
It was not her enemy.
It was a teacher.
A guide.
And maybe… it was also a test.
She rose to her feet and walked silently through the hallways, observing.
Every familiar corner, every picture on the wall, every shadow felt alive, as if it were aware of her presence.
She paused at the photograph of her great-grandparents, young and laughing, and felt a sharp pang in her chest.
She had seen this moment before.
The loop wasn’t random; it had a pattern, a rhythm. She could sense it.
Miley tried to speak again, to interact with her family, to alter something-but she could not.
The world moved on its own, indifferent to her will. Only her mind raced, only her eyes observed.
And yet… that key in the corner, that small, impossible object, whispered a promise she could not yet hear.
She sank onto the floor near the window and whispered to herself, almost inaudibly:
If I can’t break it… if I can’t save him… then what am I even here for?
The room remained still, the loop unbroken, her great-grandmother laughing, her great-grandfather calm, the sun bright. And Miley realized something:
the house was letting her see, letting her understand, before giving her the chance to act. She wasn’t powerless, not completely. She just had to wait, observe, and learn.
And somewhere in the silence, she felt a pulse in the walls, a quiet heartbeat that seemed to echo hers: patient, watchful, eternal.
