Chapter 42
Miley sank into the corner of her great-grandmother’s house, legs tucked to her chest, staring at the worn wooden floor.
The memories of the past were heavy in her mind-the ritual, the loop, the fear, the hope. She had closed her eyes, letting the world of yesterday and the lessons of the loop sink into her bones.
And then, slowly, she returned to the present.
When she opened her eyes, something felt… wrong. The room was familiar, yet nothing felt safe. Her chest tightened, and a low, cold tremor ran through her. And then she saw them.
Her parents.
They were standing there, perfectly still, frozen in place as if the world had paused around them. Eyes wide, staring directly at her. Their expressions were neutral, peaceful even, but the stillness made her stomach twist.
Something was not right.
Their hands hung loosely by their sides, their shoulders rigid, every detail unnervingly precise.
The sunlight streaming through the window hit their faces in a way that made them glow unnaturally, like wax figures sculpted to perfection.
Miley’s breath caught. She tried to speak. “Mom?” Her voice was barely a whisper.
No reply.
She stepped closer, heart hammering.
“Dad?”
Still nothing.
Her hands shook, her knees threatening to buckle.
She wanted to reach out, to touch them, to confirm they were real-but when she did, her fingers passed straight through air. Not flesh.
Not warmth. Just… nothing.
Panic began to claw at her chest. She sank to her knees. “No… no… this can’t be happening,” she whispered. “I’m not… I’m not dreaming, I’m not-“
A voice cut through the silence, calm and familiar.
“Miley…”
Her great-grandfather stepped forward from the shadows of the hallway.
His presence was solid, grounding, yet it made her tremble.
His face was calm, eyes full of both warmth and solemnity. “They can’t hear you,” he said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Not right now.”
Miley’s body shook violently. “But… they’re right there! They’re… they’re staring at me! I can’t-“
“They’re part of it,” he interrupted gently. “The loop… it touches some things differently. Some people are frozen, some are watched. Right now, you can only observe. You cannot reach them.”
Tears stung Miley’s eyes. Her chest felt tight, her throat raw from holding back sobs. “But… how can I… what if they’re trapped forever? What if I can’t fix this?”
Her great-grandfather’s grip on her shoulder was light but steady. “You’re learning. That is the first step. Watch, understand, and be patient. Everything has a reason-even if it’s cruel.”
She swallowed hard, trembling, trying to calm herself.
Her gaze returned to her parents.
The sight of them, frozen in place, utterly silent, made the world feel impossibly heavy.
Shadows from the window stretched across the floor and walls, bending unnaturally, twisting with the air like they, too, were holding their breath.
The house seemed to hum, patient and watchful, aware of her panic.
Miley’s hands curled into fists, and she pressed them against her face.
I’m not the chosen one. I’m not supposed to do anything. I’m just… part of it. Part of it… but powerless.
Her eyes caught something in the corner of the room-a faint glint reflecting sunlight.
The bronze key, the same one she had glimpsed in the past, rested there.
She could see it clearly, but her hands passed through it like mist. Still, seeing it gave her a tiny spark of hope.
Maybe, just maybe.
The fear returned with a rush. Her chest heaved, heart hammering.
She took a step back, and then another, until her back pressed against the wall. She felt trapped, cornered by a reality that wasn’t supposed to be hers to control.
“Why… why is this happening?” she whispered to herself. “What did I even do? How do I fix it?”
Her great-grandfather stepped closer, kneeling down so his eyes met hers.
“You are not alone, Miley,” he said. “Watch. Learn. And when the time is right… act.”
But Miley couldn’t stay. Panic clawed at her again.
She turned on her heel and ran, her bare feet slapping the wooden floors.
Every shadow seemed to chase her, stretching across the walls as if alive.
She burst into her room, slammed the door, and locked it with trembling hands. Her back pressed against the cool wood, heart racing, lungs burning.
Outside, the hallway remained silent. The house, patient as ever, seemed to observe, as if it had been waiting for this moment all along.
Miley sank to the floor, curling into herself, staring at the wall.
Thoughts tumbled through her mind:
The loop… it’s bigger than I thought. It’s not just him. Not just the ritual. It touches everything… everything I love… everything I care about. How can I… how do I fix this?
The bronze key in her mind glinted again, a faint, impossible promise.
She didn’t know how it worked yet.
She didn’t know what it meant.
But she knew… it mattered.
And somewhere, in the silent house, in the frozen air and the trapped shadows, the loop waited. Patient. Watching. Eternal.
