Chapter 50

Scratch.
Scratch.
Scratch.

The sound came again from behind the old bedroom door, slow and deliberate, like nails dragged carefully across wood by something patient enough to wait forever.

Miley stood frozen at the end of the hallway.

Every nerve inside her felt painfully awake now, the numbness from the past few days cracking apart beneath the sudden rush of fear.

Her heartbeat slammed unevenly against her ribs as she stared at the trembling handle.

The scratching stopped.

Silence rushed in immediately after, thick and suffocating.

Beside the door, her great-grandfather had gone completely still.

Not startled

Not confused

Afraid

And somehow, seeing fear on his face terrified her more than the sound itself.

“You hear it too,” Miley whispered.

Her voice came out thin.

Small.

The hallway lights buzzed overhead One flickered weakly before dimming again.

Her great-grandfather didn’t answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the door, shoulders tense beneath the soft glow of the failing light.

Another deep groan rolled through the walls around them.

The house.

Listening.

Warning.

“Miley…” His voice strained faintly now, quieter than before. “You cannot open that door unless the house allows it.”

Scratch.

The sound answered instantly.

Closer this time.

Miley’s breath caught.

Something was definitely behind the door.

Not moving wildly.

Not trapped desperately.

Waiting.

The thought sent cold fear sliding down her spine.

“What is it?” she whispered shakily.

The hallway darkened another shade.

Her great-grandfather finally looked at her then, and the expression in his eyes made her chest tighten painfully.

Guilt.

Grief.

Recognition.

“The loop changes things,” he said softly. “Not all at once. Slowly. Quietly. It keeps what people refuse to let go of.”

A loud crack echoed somewhere downstairs.

Miley flinched hard.

The house didn’t like this conversation again.

But her great-grandfather continued anyway.

“When your great-grandmother stopped time…” He paused briefly, voice tightening. “Something else stopped with it.”

Scratch.
Scratch.

Miley swallowed hard.

The sound almost felt impatient now.

“What do you mean?” she whispered.

He looked back toward the door.

“The loop was never empty,” he murmured.

The hallway lights flickered violently.

For one horrible second, the entire corridor went black.

Miley stopped breathing.

Then the lights returned-

dim weaker now.

And the scratching had stopped completely.

The silence afterward felt worse.

Too complete.

Too aware.

Miley’s chest rose and fell unevenly as she stared at the old bedroom door. The wood looked wrong somehow beneath the dim light-not rotten, not damaged, but older than the rest of the house. The surface seemed darker around the edges, warped slightly inward as though years of pressure had bent it slowly over time.

And near the handle-

tiny marks.

Thin scratches.

Hundreds of them.

Like someone had tried to claw their way out.

Her stomach twisted violently.

“W-who locked it?” she whispered.

Her great-grandfather closed his eyes briefly.

“She did.”

The answer barely rose above a breath.

Miley felt cold all over.

“She knew?”

His expression tightened painfully.

“She realized too late that time does not stay still quietly.”

His voice cracked faintly on the last word. “It grows hungry.”

The house SHUDDERED.

A violent tremor rushed through the hallway walls, rattling picture frames hard enough to tilt them sideways.

Miley stumbled backward.

The lights burst out completely.

Darkness swallowed the corridor whole.

For a second, all Miley could hear was her own breathing.

Then-

tick.

Her eyes widened.

A clock.

Somewhere nearby.

Tick.
Tick.
Tick.

The sound grew louder unnaturally fast.

Miley’s pulse spiked.

“That wasn’t here before,” she whispered.

Her great-grandfather turned sharply toward the end of the hall.

Neither of them had noticed it.

An old grandfather clock now stood in the darkness near the staircase.

Tall.

Black wood.

Dustless.

Its pendulum swung slowly beneath cracked glass.

Tick.
Tick.
Tick.

Miley stared at it in horror.

“I’ve never seen that before.

“You weren’t supposed to,” her great-grandfather whispered.

The clock hands trembled violently.

11:11.

The house groaned low and deep around them.

Not angry this time

Afraid.

Then the bedroom door handle moved.
Slowly.

Miley stopped breathing.

The scratching returned immediately-
not on the wood anymore.

On the other side of the door handle.
Something was touching it now.

Testing it.

The metal rattled softly.

Once.

Twice.

And then-

a voice.

So faint Miley almost thought she imagined it.

“…help me…”

Her blood ran cold.

Because the voice sounded exactly like hers.
