Chapter 51

The morning arrived without announcing itself.

No shift in light.

No clear beginning.

Just a slow, quiet continuation of something that had never properly ended.

Miley opened her eyes to a ceiling she recognized, but didn’t feel connected to.

For a moment, she simply lay there, staring upward, trying to catch the thought that had almost formed in her sleep.

It slipped away before she could hold it.

She blinked once.

Then sat up

Her body moved before her mind agreed.

The room was still.

Too still.

Even the air felt arranged, like it had been placed carefully rather than naturally settling.

She swung her legs off the bed and stood.

Something was missing again-but she didn’t know what.

That was becoming normal.

Downstairs, her parents were already there.

Her mother poured tea.

Her father adjusted the newspaper like he had done it a thousand times before.

They looked… correct.

Perfectly placed inside the morning.

“Morning, sweetheart,” her mother said softly.

Miley nodded.

“Morning.”

Her voice didn’t feel like it belonged to her. It just… happened.

She sat.

Ate.

Chewed.

Swallowed.

Everything tasted like absence.

The house hummed faintly around her-not sound exactly, but awareness.

Like it knew she was awake and was deciding what version of the day to give her

Miley didn’t question it.

Questions felt like effort she couldn’t afford.

School passed in fragments.

Anya laughed about something she couldn’t fully focus on.

Felix said something beside her-she caught the rhythm of his voice more than the words.

She smiled when appropriate.

Nodded when expected.

And somewhere inside her mind, a quiet observation formed:

I used to feel more during this part of the day.

But even that thought faded quickly, like it didn’t have permission to stay.

By the time she walked home, the sky had already started dimming in a way that felt premature.

The road looked the same.

But not identical.

There were tiny inconsistencies she couldn’t explain.

A fence that leaned a little too far.

A shadow that lingered too long after its source had moved.

A street sign that seemed slightly older than yesterday.

Miley stopped once.

Looked at it.

Then kept walking.

The house greeted her like it always did.

Quiet. Patieent. Watching without eyes.

She stepped inside.

And that was when she heard it.
A sound.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just… wrong.

A slow, dragging stretch from somewhere deeper inside the house.

Like wood pulling against itself.

Or something inside the walls remembering how to move.

Miley froze.

Her hand tightened slightly on her bag strap.

“…hello?” she called softly.

No answer.

The house never answered directly.

But it responded anyway.

Another sound.

Closer this time.

A low creak that didn’t belong to normal structure. It didn’t feel like a house settling.

It felt like something breathing through wood.

Miley frowned faintly.

A flicker of unease tried to form-

but didn’t fully arrive.

Still, she moved.

Step by step, she followed the sound down the hallway.

Her feet made almost no noise.

The house felt like it was watching her walk.

Like it had been waiting for her to decide to come.

The hallway narrowed.

The air grew heavier.

Not physically-but perceptually, like her thoughts had to push through something thicker.

The sound came again.

That stretching noise.

Not random

Not accidental

Rhythmic

Almost… intentional

Miley stopped in front of a door she didn’t remember noticing before.

It wasn’t new

But it also wasn’t familiar

Which made no sense

The wood was darker than the others around it. Slightly warped. As if it had been exposed to something it shouldn’t have survived.

She stared at it.

Her mind tried to categorize it.

Failed.

Her fingers lifted slowly.

Paused just before touching the handle.

And for a second-

just a second-

a thought flickered through her mind:

I shouldn’t open this.

But she didn’t know why.

The thought had no shape.

No memory attached to it.

Just instinct.

And instinct, lately, was unreliable.

Behind the door, the stretching sound stopped.

Silence dropped instantly.

Too clean

Too absolute

Miley swallowed

Then turned the handle

The door opened easily

Too easily.

Like it wanted to be opened.

Inside was a room.

But not a normal room.

The space didn’t match the house.

It extended farther than it should have been able to.

Walls curved slightly inward, as if the room was shaped around something at its center rather than built outward from structure.

The air inside was colder.

Older.

And there were marks on the walls.

Scratches.

Not random ones.

Patterns.

Tallies.

Lines grouped together, broken, repeated.

Some faded.

Some fresh.

Miley stepped inside slowly.

The stretching sound returned immediately-but now she could hear where it came from.

The walls.

The walls were making it.

Or something inside them was.

Her breath slowed.

Her chest tightened faintly.

Still no full fear.

Just… recognition of wrongness.

Like a word she couldn’t translate.

In the center of the room stood
something she couldn’t immediately name.

Not furniture.

Not structure.

More like a memory given shape.

Something suspended between being and not being.

And for the first time in a long while-

Miley felt something shift inside her mind.

A pressure.

A near-memory trying to surface.

But it didn’t fully come through.

Instead, it left only one sensation:

I have been here before….. right?

Her fingers twitched.

She took one step forward.

The scratches on the wall seemed to move slightly when she wasn’t looking directly at them.

As if they were rearranging themselves when she blinked.

And then-

very faintly-

she heard a voice.

Not from the room.

Not clearly.

But threaded through the walls.

Almost like it had been waiting inside them for her to arrive.

“M-Miley…”

Her breath caught.

That voice-

familiar in a way that made her stomach tighten, even without memory attached.

“M-Miley… d-don’t-“

The sound broke.

Like it couldn’t finish the sentence.

Like something was interrupting it from the inside.

The walls creaked again.

The stretching noise returned-but sharper now.

More urgent.

Miley stood completely still.

Her mind struggled to assign meaning.
Fear tried to form.

It didn’t fully succeed.

But something else did.

Curiosity.

And deeper than that-

a faint, unsettling sense that whatever was behind this door…

had been waiting a very long time for her to remember it.

And just as she took another step forward-

the scratches on the wall shifted again.

This time forming something almost readable.

Almost like a name.

Almost like hers.

The room tightened around her.

And somewhere far beneath the house-

something reacted.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

But as if it had finally been noticed again.

The scratches shifted again.

Almost forming her name.

Almost.

The stretching sound deepened inside the walls, slow and uneven, like the house itself had started breathing around her.

“M-Miley…”

This time the voice sounded closer.

Desperate.

Not warning her away anymore.

Warning her too late.

Her chest tightened suddenly.

For the first time since entering the room, fear arrived fully.

Sharp.
Real.

The air changed.

The room seemed to pull inward around her, the curved walls tightening subtly, impossibly, as though space itself were folding.

Miley stepped back instinctively.

The scratches moved faster now.

Lines rearranging.

Repeating.

Counting.

The thing in the center of the room twitched-

just slightly-

like it had noticed her noticing it.

And then-

darkness.

Not sudden.

Not violent.

Just immediate.

Like someone had quietly removed the world.

Miley woke with a sharp inhale.

Cold wood pressed against her cheek.

For one disoriented second, she thought she was in her bedroom.

Then she heard it.

Stretch.

Creak.

The sound echoed softly through the walls around her.

Her breath stopped.

The room.

She was still inside the room.

The darkness looked different now-deeper somehow, thicker than ordinary night. The scratches on the walls were faintly visible even without light.

And some of them looked fresh.

Miley pushed herself upright too quickly, panic finally crashing through the numbness in one violent wave.

“No,” she whispered immediately.

Her voice shook.

“No no no-“

Because she didn’t remember falling asleep.

And somewhere in the darkness-
very softly-

something scratched back.
