Chapter 71
The door clicked open, it was Kim Yeonseong, followed closely by Hyunwoo.
Yeonseong’s eyes fell on Taehyung and Jimin, who were by Jungkook’s side. He didn’t say anything to them, simply walked over to where Jungkook lay, pale and unconscious.
“What happened?” Yeonseong asked, his voice calm but sharp with concern. (You all know what concern that was)
“Appa… he suddenl—–” Taehyung began, but was cut off by the sound of another door opening.
It was Jin.
He stood in the doorway, completely drenched from the rain, his eyes instantly finding Jungkook on the bed.
“Jungkook…” he whispered as he stepped inside. His expression was filled with panic and worry.
He walked straight to Jungkook, gently taking his cold hand in his own, brushing aside the boy’s damp hair. He didn’t even glance at Yeonseong, who stood right beside Jungkook.
A moment later, the doctor entered the room, followed by Hobi.
Hyunwoo walked over to Jimin and Taehyung, gently resting a hand on their shoulders. “Let’s wait outside,” he said softly, guiding them out of the room to give space.
Jin remained seated next to Jungkook, holding onto his hand tightly, eyes not leaving his younger brother’s face for a second.
Hoseok walked closer, eyes scanning Jungkook’s pale lips, his drenched hair stuck to his forehead, his entire body trembling slightly.
He carefully placed two fingers on Jungkook’s neck, checking his pulse. His expression tightened.
Then, he placed his palm gently on Jungkook’s forehead.
“No fever…” Hobi murmured.
He looked at the doctor and then back at Jin.
“He had a panic attack,” Hoseok said, his voice calm but firm the doctor in him taking over. “The stress overwhelmed him. His pulse is faint and his body temperature is lower than normal. Give him a calming injection to help him settle.” the doctor nodded.
“Panic attack?” Jin asked, clearly shocked.
Hyunwoo sighed as he just entered and heard them he gestured for the doctor to continue his work. “Let’s go out and discuss later, hyung,” Hobi said quietly.
Jin let out a shaky breath and nodded slowly.
“Jimin and Tae were scared as hell,” Hobi added, placing a reassuring hand on Jin’s shoulder.
Jin glanced once more at Jungkook before stepping out of the room with Hobi, leaving the doctor, Hyunwoo, and Kim Yeonseong behind.
The doctor checked Jungkook carefully, monitoring his vitals. His expression darkened as he pulled the stethoscope away.
“This was a severe attack,” Dr. Hwang said seriously. “I strongly suggest for him to see a psychologist. If we don’t treat him in time, things will escalate quickly. He’s already on the verge of falling apart. You both know how serious his panic attacks have become and how it was lyk in the past too.”
Hyunwoo nodded, concern all over his face.
Kim Yeonseong, however, stood there emotionless, his arms folded. He scoffed lightly and muttered, “What does he even know? All he knows is how to be weak and pathetic. Why the hell was he even born as my son? Such a trash. He can’t be this week and pathetic to be called as the Kim Yeonseong’s son.”
With that, he turned around and walked out, leaving a heavy silence behind.
Hyunwoo closed his eyes for a second, frustration flickering across his face. Then he looked back at Jungkook.
He quietly walked closer and sat beside him, gently taking Jungkook’s cold hand in his.
Running a soft hand through Jungkook’s damp hair, he whispered, “Please be fine, Kookie… please.”
The doctor prepared the calming injection, and Hyunwoo gently rolled up Jungkook’s hoodie sleeve.
His eyes fell on Jungkook’s arms most of the old scars had faded, leaving only faint traces. A small sigh of relief escaped Hyunwoo’s lips.
At least… he hadn’t been beaten in months.
Hyunwoo knew Jungkook always tried hard to hide those scars. He would apply ointments on time, trying his best to prevent marks from forming. Yet no matter how much he tried, some scars were stubborn like tattoos etched into his skin, refusing to leave.
Hyunwoo’s heart ached at the sight of his pale face.
The doctor gently injected the calming medication. Jungkook whimpered softly in his sleep, his brows twitching.
Hyunwoo reached out and patted his chest gently, trying to soothe him. Just then, Jungkook’s eyes fluttered open. His gaze landed on Hyunwoo beside him. Slowly, he turned his head and noticed Dr. Hwang standing nearby.
He let out a shaky breath.
“Jungkook, are you okay? Are you feeling uneasy? Do you want some water?” Hyunwoo asked softly, worry etched into his voice.
Jungkook looked at him for a moment, then mumbled, “Appa…”
Hyunwoo froze briefly. His heart clenched hearing Jungkook still calling Kim as “Appa”, the man who didn’t deserve the title.
“He’s outside. Don’t worry,” Hyunwoo said, gently brushing Jungkook’s hair back. “You’re fine, Samchoon is with you. Breathe slowly… nothing is happening, alright?”
Jungkook stared at him, his breaths still shallow.
Hyunwoo took his hand, giving it a comforting squeeze. “I’m here. I won’t leave you, hmm?” he said softly, voice laced with concern.
Jungkook’s tired eyes fluttered shut again
“I’ll give him some medicine to help.”, he asked while pulling a small container from his medical bag.
Hyunwoo hummed in respoce. He was patting jungkook’s chest gently making him fall asleep.
Dr. Hwang nodded. “He should not stress a lot,” he said lowly seeing jungkook dozing off.
Hyunwoo sighed softly and nodded. Hyunwoo picked up the duvet and carefully wrapped it around Jungkook, tucking it. Then he sat beside him, gently patting his chest in a comforting rhythm and caressing his hair.
The doctor bowed to him and left from there.
Meanwhile with Others.
Jin was doing his best to calm Taehyung, who was already beginning to panic.
“Hyungie… he… he had chest pain too. He’s not fine,” Taehyung said, his voice trembling as tears welled in his eyes.
Jin gently pulled him into a hug and softly whispered, “He’s fine. He’ll be okay. Nothing will happen to him. Hmm? Don’t worry, we’re all here for him.”
Taehyung slowly nodded, getting comfort from his hyung’s warmth and words. Meanwhile, Hobi was quietly comforting Jimin, who looked equally shaken.
Once Taehyung calmed down a bit, Jin broke the hug and offered him a glass of water. Taehyung took it and drank it down in one go.
“What exactly happened, Tae?” Jin asked gently.
“He was in the kitchen, and we were in the living room. We heard the sound of glass breaking, he had dropped it after a thunder strike. When we rushed in, he was clutching his chest and breathing way too heavily, like he was having a panic attack. He looked like he was in pain. Then… another thunder hit, and he flinched really hard… and then he fainted,” Taehyung explained, his voice shaky.
Jin and Hobi frowned in concern, processing his words. Hobi immediately understood, it had been a severe panic attack.
“Alright, you both should go and get some rest, hmm? We can talk more later. You must be exhausted too,” Hobi said calmly.
Jimin looked at him with pleading eyes. “Is Jungkook going to be okay?”
Hobi reached out and gently caressed Jimin’s hair. “He will be fine,” he assured softly.
Jimin nodded, Taehyung and Jimin headed to Tae’s room quietly, leaving the others behind.
Jin sat there, his hands running through his hair, clearly frustrated. That’s when he noticed Kim came and sitting across from him. Jin gritted his teeth and stared at him, but before he could speak, Hobi gently gestured for him to stay calm.
Jin let out a deep breath and asked in a dangerously calm tone, “Is it the first time he’s had a panic attack?”
Kim scoffed lightly and replied, “Sometimes he gets them… whenever he hears loud noises. Nothing to worry about. He—”
He was cut off by Jin’s sharp voice.
“Nothing to worry about? He’s had panic attacks before, and you still let it continue like this? Did you even see him just now, how vulnerable and pale he looked? How the hell am I not supposed to worry?”
Kim sighed, clearly uninterested. “He’ll be fine. It’s common for him. I already told you he faints sometimes,” he said flatly as he stood up.
Jin clenched his fists in frustration as Kim turned and walked out of the room without another word. He gritted his teeth, fighting the urge to lash out.
Hobi placed a calming hand on his shoulder. “Hyung, please… try to stay calm. We’ll figure everything out. Don’t stress too much, okay?”
Jin just nodded, still fuming silently.
Just then, they noticed the doctor coming out of the room.
Hobi stepped forward and spoke first.
“Umm… Mr. Hwang, I think Jungkook had chest pain too.”
Dr. Hwang nodded. “Yes, he did. But don’t worry, he’ll be fine. I’ve given him some medication. Make sure he takes it on time, and most importantly, ensure he eats properly. He should recover with rest.”
Both Hobi and Jin nodded.
Jin looked at the doctor and asked, “You’re the same doctor who treated Jungkook in Italy too, right?”
Dr. Hwang gave a small nod. “Yes. I’ve been seeing him since… that accident.”
Jin’s gaze darkened as he asked, “How severe have his panic attacks been in the past?”
The doctor hesitated. He had been strictly warned by Kim not to reveal anything about Jungkook’s medical condition.
“Umm… not too severe. They come and go. Rare, really. Nothing too concerning,” he said, clearly holding something back. He clearly knew he was lying to the extream. Which he said was completely opposite of what the reality is.
Jin eyed him suspiciously but said nothing. He simply nodded.
The doctor bowed politely and walked away.
Meanwhile, with Haein
She was in her car, gripping the steering wheel tightly as she drove. Her eyes blazed with anger.
“He’s really fucking annoying. Do I look like a damn spy to him? Why the fuck is he asking why I’m in the mafia? Aish, shiball! It’s not like I’m interested in working with that bastard! Aish, shiball!” Haein grumbled, her voice rising with frustration.
She was fuming. That’s when her own words echoed back in her mind “You don’t even know what he’s done… I’m fucking threatened.”
She had spilled the tea, something she absolutely shouldn’t have.
Slamming the brakes, she stopped the car in the middle of a muddy path and punched the steering wheel. “Ahhh, I’m so fucked up. Why the hell did I say those things? Aish, shiball! What if he asks me what that monster did? What if he finds out about Jungkook? AHHH you idiot, Haein. You’re cooked. You’re completely cooked,” she ranted, genuinely messed up and spiraling.
After a few more minutes of panicked grumbling, she pulled out her phone and called her assistant.
“Make sure there’s no personal information about me on the internet. Secure everything. No leaks. No one should be able to hack into anything. Got it?” she ordered sharply before hanging up.
Next, she called Hyunwoo. After a few rings, he picked up.
“Ah, Uncle,” Haein said, trying to sound less shaken.
“Nae, Haeinah,” Hyunwoo responded, his voice calm and quiet.
“Where are you, Uncle?” she asked “At the mansion. Why?” hyunwoo replied
“Ani… I messed up. There was an attack… and I, I said something I shouldn’t have……” she started saying the things happened quickly, anxiety lacing her voice.
“You said that? Aish, Haeinah,” Hyunwoo said, clearly surprised and a little alarmed.
“Nae… what do I do now? What if he asks about the past? What if he starts digging?” Haein asked nervously.
“Don’t worry. Let’s meet in an hour. We’ll discuss everything at the office.”
“Okay. Umm… you said he’s not in the mafia anymore, but… he seems like he still is?” Haein asked, unsure.
“I’ll explain when we meet. I’m hanging up now. Just stay calm, okay? See you at the office.”
“Nae,” Haein murmured and hung up.
She exhaled deeply, feeling just a little more at ease, but the storm in her head was far from over.
With Jin
Jin had changed into a more casual outfit. Hobi had gone out, leaving Jin alone. He first entered Tae’s room. He saw jimin and tae already sleeping. He covered duvet on them and left from there quietly shitting the door.
He quietly made his way to Jungkook’s room, slowly opening the door. Inside, he saw Hyunwoo sitting by Jungkook’s side, gently patting and caressing the boy’s hair.
Jin walked in softly. “Is he sleeping?” he asked in a low, gentle voice.
“Hmm,” Hyunwoo hummed with a nod, glancing at Jin. “He must be exhausted.”
Jin sat down near the bed, his eyes fixed on Jungkook. After a brief pause, he asked quietly, “Has this happened in Italy too?”
Hyunwoo sighed, nodding slowly. “Sometimes. He’s really scared of loud noises… That’s why.”
Jin nodded, but after a moment of silence, he suddenly asked, “Was he… Was he alone in Italy Samchoon??”
The question made Hyunwoo freeze for a second. He swallowed hard. “Huh?” he asked, trying to sound casual, but his voice betrayed his unease.
“I mean… he looks so distant. Always alone,” Jin said quietly, his eyes still on Jungkook’s face.
Hyunwoo gave a small, tight smile. “He’s… always been like that. But I’m sure, once he gets comfortable, he’ll open up more.”
But deep down, Hyunwoo wasn’t sure of that at all. It had been years since Jungkook spoke freely to anyone. He couldn’t even remember the last time he saw him smile properly.
Jin nodded slowly, then looked back at Hyunwoo with narrowed eyes. “Why is Haein in Black Swan?”
Hyunwoo tensed up again and swallowed. “Actually, Jin… it’s not what you think. She was forced,” he began carefully. “Your father threatened her. That’s why she had no choice but to work under him.”
Jin stared at him for a second before asking, “Threatened how? Was it about her family… or something else?”
Hyunwoo took a deep breath. “Her family. As you know, she grew up alone with her brother and aunt. Kim threatened them… that’s why.”
He knew he had only told peice of the truth. In reality, Haein was supposed to leave Black Swan after Hyesuk’s death, but she chose to stay not just because of the threats, but because she wanted answers. She wanted protection for her brothers, and she wanted revenge.
Jin hummed quietly, the weight of his thoughts visible in his tired eyes. “Was she… like us too? Did she give up her dream of becoming a doctor because of Kim?” he asked, his voice low and laced with sorrow, eyes fixed on Hyunwoo.
Hyunwoo gave a faint nod, his expression unreadable.
Jin let out a shaky sigh. “I’ll make sure he regrets everything… For threatening us, for thinking about dragging Chim, Bear in that shitty mafia, and her into this mess, everything. All for his fucking pride and reputation,” Jin muttered, his jaw clenched.
Hyunwoo swallowed hard, guilt blooming in his chest.
He was already terrified that the truths Jin was slowly uncovering, he might one day find the entire story of Jungkook’s past, his connection to the mafia. And he knew Jin. Jin wouldn’t forgive anyone. Not even himself.
Trying to keep the moment from spiraling, Hyunwoo forced a calm voice. “Just… try to stay steady, Jin-ah. Don’t overthink it. Let’s take it one step at a time.”
Jin nodded absentmindedly, running a hand through his hair. His thoughts were far from calm.
Hyunwoo stood up and said, “I’ll head out now. If Jimin wants to come home later, let him. And please… don’t stress too much. Take care of Jungkook. Make sure he eats properly… and takes those medicines.”
“I will,” Jin said softly.
Hyunwoo paused at the doorway, turning back slightly. “If Jungkook panics again… try to stay with him. Talk to him, calm him.”
Jin nodded again
Once Hyunwoo was gone, Jin quietly walked back to Jungkook’s bedside. He sat down, taking Jungkook’s hand gently in his own, his thumb softly tracing the faint lines across the knuckles.
“You were all alone there… weren’t you?” Jin whispered, voice trembling. “I’m sorry, Kook. Hyungie won’t leave you again. Never again. I’m here now. And I’ll stay. Just… please be okay.”
His voice cracked at the end, heavy with guilt and love.
But little did he know…
There was still so much left to uncover.
So much pain Jungkook had hidden behind that quiet gaze.
So many scars that not even Jin could imagine.
How would he react when the truth came out?
When will he finally learned the full extent of his younger brother’s suffering?
Would he be able to forgive himself…
For leaving him all alone in a world that devoured him slowly?
