Chapter 72
Jin was sitting in Jungkook’s room, working on his laptop. It was almost 11 at night. He had managed to make Taehyung and Jimin eat and go to sleep, though they were too stubborn to leave Jungkook’s side. Still, Jin had gently made them to rest.
His attention was on the laptop, but his eyes kept drifting to Jungkook from time to time.
Then he heard a soft whimper.
Jin immediately set the laptop aside and rushed to Jungkook’s side. He saw Jungkook slowly opening his eyes. Jin gently took his hand.
“Jungkook-ah,” Jin called softly.
Jungkook groaned slightly and looked at Jin, rubbing his eyes.
“Kook, are you okay?” Jin asked, his voice laced with worry.
Jungkook blinked, slowly taking in his surroundings, confused and disoriented.
“Are you feeling any uneasiness, Kook?” Jin asked again.
Jungkook slightly shook his head no.
“Are you sure? Do you have a headache, chest pain, or any discomfort at all?” Jin continued, concerned.
Jungkook stared at him in confusion for a moment. Then, after a pause, he finally opened his mouth and spoke, “I’m fine.” His voice was hoarse with sleep.
Jin sighed in relief. “Here, drink some water,” he said, pouring water into a glass and handing it to him.
Jungkook slowly sat up. As he did, the memories of what had happened earlier came rushing back. His chest tightened with anxiety. His thoughts spiraled.
Will he ask me about it?
Will he think I’m weak too?
Will he scold or punish me?
Why did this happen in front of them?
He gripped the bedsheet a little tighter, trying to push the fear away.
Jin looked at Jungkook and gently handed him the glass of water. “Here, take slow sips,” he said softly.
Jungkook nodded and drank, small sips.
Once he finished, Jin set the glass aside and slowly reached out to caress Jungkook’s hair, brushing it back with tender care.
“Are you really not feeling any uneasiness, Kook?” he asked again, his voice low but laced with concern.
Jungkook stared at him, a little confused, his eyes searching Jin’s face. “I said I’m fine… but why do you keep asking that? You don’t need to worry about me,” he mumbled, uncertainty creeping into his voice.
He couldn’t help the uneasy feeling crawling in his chest. Did someone tell him? Did they say something about me and my past?
Jin’s expression softened, but his voice trembled slightly. “You literally had a panic attack, Jungkook. How can I not worry, huh?”
Jungkook stared back at him. For a moment, he said nothing.
So… he knows?
And just like that, the wall he was trying to hold up started to shake.
He knows… so now he’ll start seeing me the same way. Weak. Pathetic. Just like everyone else.
He looked away, his chest tightening, not from panic this time, but from shame.
Jungkook broke the eye contact, his voice turning cold. “It’s not that serious. Its not worth worrying about. You don’t need to worry for me.”
But barely a moment passed before Jin’s voice cut through the room, heavy with emotion. He said sternly “Don’t you dare say that again.”
Jungkook’s eyes widened slightly at the sudden force in Jin’s tone.
“How can I not worry about you, huh? You’re my brother. My youngest brother. I have every right to worry about you, even if you don’t care, even if no one tells me anything, I still will.”
Jin’s voice cracked, and he took a shaky breath before continuing. “Do you even know what I felt when I heard you fainted Jungkook? I was hella worried And then I was told you’ve had panic attacks before, in Italy. Do you know how worry that made me feel?”
Jungkook looked down, jaw clenched, hands trembling just slightly under the blanket.
“It makes me so damn angry… that no one ever said a word to me. It’s like I was just wearing the title of being your hyung, but not once was I treated like someone who deserved to know about your pain.”
Jin’s chest rose and fell heavily. His eyes were glassy, hands curled into fists at his sides. “You were suffering… and I didn’t even know. That hurts more than anything. You’ve had freaking panic attacks but no one ever told me that”
Jungkook stared at Jin, his mind struggling to process the intensity of jin’s words. He hadn’t expected this, this depth of worry, this raw emotion.
Jungkook’s eyes flickered in realization. So he doesn’t know. Not everything.
He swallowed hard, thoughts spiraling. What if he knew the real reason? What if he found out everything I went through? About What I did?
A knot tightened in his chest. Part of him wanted to tell Jin. A part that hadn’t felt this kind of warmth, care, and safety in a long time. For a brief second, he believed it…. believed that maybe Jin, Taehyung, and the others weren’t the people Kim had warned him about. Maybe they truly did care. Maybe… the things Kim told him were lies.
But even with that warmth settling in his heart, another voice echoed in his mind cold, cautious.
What if it’s temporary? What if they find out everything and leave? What if they get hurt… because of me?.
Will someone also die like eomma and hyung? Will they also hate me now? Will thay also abuse me everyday now? Will they abandon me after knowing that I killed him?
Jungkook was pulled from his spiraling thoughts when he heard Jin’s voice, soft and careful.
“Kook…”
Jungkook looked up, confused and questioning, eyes searching Jin’s face.
“You okay? Fine?” Jin asked gently, placing his hand over Jungkook’s.
Jungkook hesitated for a moment before nodding silently, eyes dropping back to the bed.
Jin sighed, watching him closely. “Sorry… I just got really tensed,” he murmured, voice quieter now, trying not to push too hard.
Jungkook didn’t respond, he just sat still, his face distant, his body stiff. Jin could see it. The nervous energy. The numbness. The storm behind the silence.
He exhaled slowly, then tried again. “Eat a little and rest, hmm?”
Jungkook shook his head slightly, eyes still not meeting Jin’s.
“Why?” Jin asked softly.
“I’m… not hungry,” Jungkook replied in a low voice, barely audible.
“Just a little?” Jin encouraged, his tone gentle. “It’s necessary, just little hmm?”.
Jungkook truly didn’t feel like eating, not even a bite, but something about Jin’s quiet persistence made it hard to say no. He gave a reluctant nod.
A small, you smile tugged at Jin’s lips. “Good. Wait here, okay? I’ll bring the food.”
Jin stood up and left the room quietly.
As the door clicked shut behind him, Jungkook sat frozen for a moment. Then he dropped his head into his hands with a low sigh, frustration washing over him like a crashing wave.
“Ahhh… wae? Why can’t they just leave me alone?” he mumbled into his palms. “I didn’t want any of this… I didn’t want anyone.”
His voice cracked. He ran his fingers through his hair roughly, rubbing at his temples as though trying to chase away the pain pounding there.
The pressure. The noise. The ache of being seen when all he wanted was to disappear.
But they were still here, his brothers was still here. And for some reason, that hurt more than being left behind.
Meanwhile with Hyunwoo
He entered his office at Bangtan’s headquarters, pushing the door open only to see Haein already there, waiting.
“Uncle,” Haein said, standing up immediately.
Hyunwoo walked in quietly and sat down in front of her, grabbing a bottle of water and taking a long sip.
Haein watched him closely, concern written all over her face. “What happened, Uncle?” she asked, voice tense.
“Jungkook fainted, Haein,” he said lowly, rubbing his temples in clear exhaustion.
“Mwo?! How? Is he okay now? What happened? Is he hurt?” she rushed out, eyes wide in panic.
Hyunwoo nodded gently. “He’s okay now. He just panicked when he heard thunder. Jin’s with him, he’ll take care of him. Don’t worry.”
Haein let out a breath but still looked uneasy. “Thunder…” she mumbled, her eyes drifting.
Hyunwoo leaned forward a bit, his voice steady but firm. “Just tell Jin that Kim forced you into Black Swan by threatening your family. That’s it. Don’t go into anything else. He’s already digging for the secrets and… he’s not angry with you. So don’t stress too much.”
Haein nodded silently, but the anxiety still lingered in her eyes.
After a brief pause, she finally asked, almost hesitantly, “Does Jin hate Kim too?”
Hyunwoo sighed and nodded slowly. “He does. A lot.”
She looked down, chewing on her lip. Then, gathering a bit of courage, she asked, “When are you planning to tell him everything? Uncle… if he finds out about his father’s real deeds on kook, he’ll do something reckless, you know that. So when are you going to tell him the full truth before he finds out?”
Her voice was quiet, but the weight behind her words was undeniable.
Hyunwoo let out a deep sigh as his thoughts raced. “There’s so much I need to tell you too, Haein… but I just don’t have the courage. I don’t even know how any of you will react to the truth.”
He finally spoke, voice low, “Let’s… let’s talk about everything when the time is right. But…” he paused, hesitation visible in his eyes.
Haein furrowed her brows. “But?” she asked, confused by his sudden halt.
“I think… we should never mention Suho to Jin,” Hyunwoo said carefully.
Haein’s eyes widened. “Wae? Why not?”
Hyunwoo looked down at the table, guilt flickering across his face. “Because Jin and the others… they still believe he’s alive.”
“Mwo?” she breathed out in disbelief. “What do you mean by Jin and the others? Do they… do they know about oppa?” she asked, her voice rising slightly in shock.
A bitter sad chuckle escaped Hyunwoo’s lips. “They knew him better than anyone else, Haein. They were like brothers… bound by blood, by pain, by everything they went through.”
Haein stared at him, clearly shaken and confused. “Brothers? Uncle… say it properly. What are you talking about?” she demanded, her voice trembling with both confusion and fear.
“Sorry to say all of this so late, Haein-ah,” Hyunwoo began, his voice low and weary. He took a deep breath before continuing, “Jin met Suho in the mafia. To be honest… Jin and the others were also dragged into that world, just like you. They didn’t choose it. They were thrown into it.”
Haein’s eyes widened slightly, but she remained silent, listening.
“They met Suho there. It only took a few months, and they became the closest of friends. Their bond was unbreakable. Suho was Youngmi noona’s son, you remember her, right? She was Yoona noona’s and Hyesuk’s best friend and also your mother’s. Suho was like only hyung to Jin, Jin was the closest to him. After Yoona passed away, Jin raised Taehyung on his own. But Suho and Youngmi noona were always there for them, taking care of them like family. Just like hyesuk for you all They became each other’s strength.”
He paused, swallowing hard before his voice dropped again.
“As the years passed, their bond only grew stronger. But…” he looked down, pain flickering across his face, “everything changed….” He stared saying what happen that night how Jin was betrayed. How Youngmi died. How Suho disappeared. He said everything even about iin’m sufferings and how he tried to protect his brothers.
Haein’s brows knitted in worry, her heart heavy.
“He still believes Suho will come home one day,” Hyunwoo continued, his voice filled with sorrow. “That he’ll get a chance to apologize. He blames himself for Youngmi noona’s death, even though deep down he knows it wasn’t truly his fault. But that guilt… it’s killing him slowly.”
Hyunwoo’s hands clenched slightly as he added, “He waits. Every single day. For a message. A call. Anything. He still hopes. But he doesn’t know Suho is gone, Haein. And if he ever finds out… I’m afraid he’ll completely break.”
“And hyung… he still uses it against Jin. He tells him he was the one who caused Youngmi noona’s death. That pain… it never left him. Jin went through hell, Haein. And I don’t think he could handle the pain of losing Suho all over again especially not like this.”
Haein had tears welling in her eyes. “So… that monster didn’t spare them either?” she whispered, her voice trembling. Hyunwoo looked down in silence, guilt heavy in his chest. Haein covered her face with her hands and cried, deep, quiet sobs that shook her shoulders. She wasn’t someone who cried easily. But right now… it all felt too heavy.
After several minutes, she wiped her face roughly, swallowing back the remaining tears. “What about Taehyung and Jimin?” she asked, her voice hoarse and exhausted.
“They weren’t involved,” Hyunwoo replied softly. “Jin left the mafia for them. When Kim drugged Jin back then, Suho was the one who stepped in, he fought Kim, made sure it would never happen again. But after Suho left for Italy, Jin… changed. He distanced himself from hyung. Their bond became nothing more than business partners.”
He paused, the words growing harder to speak.
“And when Jungkook’s connection to everything was revealed… Jin fought with Kim again, warned him, tried to protect him. And I know Jin, he’s already digging. He’s trying to uncover the truth. But Haein…” his voice cracked, “I’m terrified of what Jin will do if he finds out the full truth. That Suho is dead. That Jungkook is in the mafia. And… that hyung made Jungkook kill Suho.”
Haein just stared at him with tears. Hyunwoo continued, fear written all over his face.
“I swear, if Jin finds out… he will destroy hyung. And probably me too. And honestly… maybe we deserve it. I regret it all every day. Every single day. And now with Hyesuk’s death too… everything is spiraling out of control. It’s all so messed up.”
He exhaled shakily. “Jungkook… he’s completely out of control. He doesn’t listen to anyone anymore. It’s like he’s lost in a place none of us can reach.”
Haein’s tears hadn’t stopped, but her voice came out steady this time. “Uncle… he has to know the truth. We can’t hide, this from him forever. Hiding things, especially things like these, will only make everything worse. He deserves the truth. All of it.”
She looked up, her expression firm despite the pain. “Let’s tell him. When the time is right… we tell him everything.”
“No. No, not about Suho’s death. Not now,” Hyunwoo said firmly, shaking his head as panic flashed in his eyes. “I don’t know what Jin might do if he finds out. The extent he’d go to…” he trailed off, rubbing his temples. “Not yet. Maybe not ever. He’s already carrying too much, Haein.”
He looked up at her, voice low and strained.
“Hyung is already trying to pull him and others back into the mafia also jimin and tae. I’m terrified of what comes next. If Jin finds out about Jungkook’s past… he’ll lose himself completely. I don’t think he can take any more. And I..” his voice broke for a moment, “I can’t watch them suffer like that again.”
Haein stayed silent for a long moment before responding quietly but with strength,
“He has us, Uncle. And Jungkook too, he has all of us, even if he pushes us away.”
Hyunwoo gave a small nod, but his expression was far from relief.
But little did Haein know… She thought everything had finally surfaced. She believed no more secrets remained from her.
But the truth?… Everything she believed was a carefully woven lie… And she had no idea what Jungkook had really gone through… No idea what darkness still lay hidden in his past.
